SoHarlem Inc. is a community-based social enterprise established to create cultural industry jobs and to enhance public spaces in the Manhattanville Factory District. Cultural Industry Incubator is SoHarlem's anchor program. It was conceived to assist creative entrepreneurs launch micro-enterprises in the Manhattanville Factory District by providing them with working space, business management support and resources. The Public Space Partnership Initiative works to make the District's public commons more welcoming and inspirational, and it contributes to Manhattanville's environmental health through greening and eco-restoration.
At SoHarlem we offer a safe space for creative individuals to change our communitys narrative and ensure that they and their fellow, long term residents in this culturally rich district are a part of ongoing and sustainable economic development. The Designers Studio is an accessible 5000 square foot working plant in a former manufacturing building in the last industrial area left in Harlem. With high ceilings, abundant natural light, two 8 and one 16 cutting tables, 16 sewing machines, and other industry equipment it has proven to be an unparalleled resource for artists.

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Incubating Creative EntrepreneursIn 2024 SoHarlem continued to work with 17 creative entrepreneurs which included 10 designers, 3 design apprentices; 2 makers-in-residence; and 2 design interns. SoHarlem provided work/studio space, access to office space, technology, shopping area for their wares, mentorship and other resources. A significant amount of time was devoted to planning and professional development for all the CEs. They had access to industry professional that assisted them with updating their business canvases, reviewed their brand philosophy; product lines; marketing; and sales. This began the process of providing CEs with the information needed to create a pitch deck to help them with potential investors and small business competitions. As part of their professional development SoHarlems Communications Specialist, Vivian Cotte reviewed their social media presence, websites, e-commerce and shopping sites as a group and followed-up with individual consultations. She continued to work with them throughout the year to either develop or strengthen the social media and websites.September is Fashion Month in New York City and most designers cannot afford to participate because it cost thousands of dollars. SoHarlem had never had a fashion show featuring its designers and apprentices and we raised funds to help make this happen as part of our incubation process. Instead of charging designers as others do in Harlem who put on fashion shows they each were provided a modest budget to hire the models, stylists, make-up, etc. who can best tell their stories and walk the runway. The inaugural fashion show was the center piece of SoHarlems annual event, I AM SO HARLEM. It featured inspirational designs of our creative entrepreneurs, and was followed-up with a three-day pop at the site of the event. The impact of the Fashion Show increased SoHarlems visibility and markets for our designers; increased the demand for our programs and services; and helped our creative entrepreneurs increase their understanding on how best to tell their story, manage the details of working with models and increase their overall business acumen including increasing their income.SoHarlem created additional pop-up opportunities with greater accessibility for our CEs. A few examples include: Holiday Shop N Sip; and at Columbia Universitys Forum for three weeks. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | Training Institute: Workforce DevelopmentIn 2024, the Creative Economy Training Institute offered a 12-week training on the fundamentals of sewing. The priority was to serve unemployed and underemployed Central Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem and Upper Manhattan residents at no cost. Trainees were also recruited from the South Bronx given the need, proximity to Harlem, and reality that Harlem has become unaffordable. Trainees were taught basic sewing techniques related to garment construction. The program also served designers and others seeking to develop their garment construction skills to enhance their ability as designers. The program has served as a pathway for recruiting apprentices for SoHarlem. Of the 18 trainees in 2024, three were hired as a Studio Apprentice at SoHarlem, four found work in the garment industry, one is using her skills doing alterations as part of the laundry she owns with her family, the other established a small cottage business making dresses for Quinceaera celebrations (a Latin American tradition celebrating a girl's 15th birthday).In addition, SoHarlem provided two young designers with 63 hours of intensive training in design, pattern making and garment construction. SoHarlem accommodated their schedules and commutes during January. During the Summer SoHarlem recruited summer interna, from the High School of Art & Design to assist the designers in preparing for their Fall Fashion Show. The Designers Studio also provided more than 200 hours to studio access to former creative entrepreneurs, apprentices and trainees to work on projects. Designers and seamstresses were available to assist them with patternmaking and garment construction utilizing the cutting tables, sewing machines, ironing stations and other equipment. |
