Mission and Program Overview

Mission

SoHarlem Inc. is a community-based social enterprise established to create cultural industry jobs and to enhance public spaces in the Manhattanville Factory District. Cultural Industry Incubator is SoHarlem's anchor program. It was conceived to assist creative entrepreneurs launch micro-enterprises in the Manhattanville Factory District by providing them with working space, business management support and resources. The Public Space Partnership Initiative works to make the District's public commons more welcoming and inspirational, and it contributes to Manhattanville's environmental health through greening and eco-restoration.

At SoHarlem we offer a safe space for creative individuals to change our communitys narrative and ensure that they and their fellow, long term residents in this culturally rich district are a part of ongoing and sustainable economic development. The Designers Studio is an accessible 5000 square foot working plant in a former manufacturing building in the last industrial area left in Harlem. With high ceilings, abundant natural light, three 8 cutting tables, 14 sewing machines, and other industry equipment it has proven to be an unparalleled resource for artists.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Training Institute: Workforce Development- Over the course of two twelve week sessions, trained 15 unemployed and underemployed residents, ranging in age from 19 to 56; in addition to instruction on how to sew, cut patterns and operate equipment, we helped them think about career goals, based on a newly acquired understanding of fashion and other related industries and with realistic financial expectations; all of the participants in our training program received stipends to help offset related expenses.- Helped to secure job placements for at least 10 out of the 15 trainees;- The successful completion of two training sessions in 2021 put in place the groundwork for the program's continuation in 2022; a first session began the first week in February.
