The organization hosted two academic conferences. The spring conference, in portland, oregon, had about 260 attendees and focused on: assessment, professional development, and powerful books for educators. The fall conference, in kansas city, missouri, had about 150 attendees and focused on civics, citizenship and civility in our public schools. In addition, the academy began its relationship with myers education press, arranging the publication of two books: why kids love (and hate) school: reflections on difference, and why kids love (and hate) school: reflections on practice. These books were distributed at the two above mentioned conferences, free of charge, to those attending the conferences. The academy continues to publish scholarly articles in its blind peer-reviewed open-access online journal, critical questions in education.
