FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION:

The berkeley music group is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that was formed to renovate and run the uc theatre taube family music hall in berkeley. Our mission is to present a vibrant and diverse range of live performances to advance the understanding and appreciation of music, culture, and education in the bay area. The uc theatre will feature a wide-ranging mix of local, national, and international artists; plus film, comedy shows, and speaker events. The concert career pathways education programs will offer vocational training on technical, creative, and business aspects of running and promoting concerts and cultural events through workshops and hands-on paid internship programs, as well as job placement opportunities. The berkeley music group is dedicated to ensuring the uc theatre strengthens the bay area's vibrant fabric of nonprofit arts and service organizations.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A - Program Service Accomplishments

The berkeley music group (bmg) raised funds for the renovation of the uc theatre which opened to the public in april of 2016, giving birth to an exciting new place to gather for music in berkeley. It is a tribute to the many people in the community with great philanthropic hearts, who invested in the idea of a reborn theatre's second life as a music venue creating community benefit through concerts, youth education programs and community partnerships in the east bay and beyond. The uc theatre taube family music hall is a multi-tiered, all ages, 1,400 capacity live music venue with a bar and kitchen, and a state-of-the-art meyer leopard sound system. Bmg presents a diverse range of local, national and international artists and bands featuring the best in live entertainment. Bmg is dedicated to ensuring that the uc theatre strengthens the bay area's vibrant fabric of nonprofit arts and service organizations. We are building a collaborative network of community partnerships with existing education, performing arts, health and youth development nonprofits to assist them with their fundraising and outreach through events at the uc theatre.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4B - Program Service Accomplishments

Bmg's concert career pathways education program teaches young people ages 17 to 25 the technical, creative, and business aspects of concert and event promotion. Bmg's hands-on work-based learning model is a combination of free workshops and paid internships where young people learn the best practices in essential jobs such as: production manager, event coordinator, stage manager, floor manager, ticketing and box office operations, bar operations, general marketing and promotions, social media promotions, booking, and more. Bmg offers these programs to youth attending local schools and underserved youth through partnerships with established non-profit community organizations, and the general public. Since reopening, bmg has hosted 2 concert career pathways intern cohorts, with a third cohort of 20 teen and young adults begins in august. Bmg's students come from a diverse range of backgrounds; half the students are female, 73% are people of color, and most of them live up and down the hwy 80 corridor from san pablo to san leandro. Over 80% of our graduates were placed in entry level positions within the music industry and related sectors of their internship positions. Bmg is proud to have trained many of their interns to produce their own small-scale concert series: speak your truth (syt) a youth produced concert series where previous and current interns use the skills they've learned to produce their own events. In order to ensure that the program is accessible to young people for underserved communities, bmg formed the educational advisory committee which is comprised of numerous nonprofit youth development organizations who work from these communities.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1THE BERKELEY MUSIC GROUP (BMG) RAISED FUNDS FOR THE RENOVATION OF THE UC THEATRE WHICH OPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN APRIL OF 2016, GIVING BIRTH TO AN EXCITING NEW PLACE TO GATHER FOR MUSIC IN BERKELEY.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2BMG'S CONCERT CAREER PATHWAYS EDUCATION PROGRAM TEACHES YOUNG PEOPLE AGES 17 TO 25 THE TECHNICAL, CREATIVE, AND BUSINESS ASPECTS OF CONCERT AND EVENT PROMOTION.
