FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The mission of education opens doors (eod) is to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to realize their college and career potential. We believe all students deserve the opportunity to pursue their limitless potential. They have the right to understand the value of an education and how to access and attain all options available to them after high school. Yet, systems of inequity within education are leaving thousands of underserved youth across the country behind, restricting the path to social mobility and economic security. Without a roadmap to success, countless students' aspirations are never fully realized, as they lack the information and support necessary to achieve their dreams. Through the roadmap to success program, eod equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to realize their college and career potential. Eod addresses the non-academic barriers that students face on their path to postsecondary success through each facet of the roadmap to success program package. We provide a research-driven student manual, aligned curriculum, customized in-classroom teacher support, and data analysis. We collaborate with schools and organizations, collectively impacting students.. Ultimately, the goal of the roadmap to success program is to improve graduation rates and increase postsecondary enrollment and completion for all students, setting them on the path to college and career success. Serving schools and partners across texas, in new orleans, and new york, we prioritize middle school students from communities of color, low-income communities, and future first-generation college students.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

In 2017, a national survey done by harris interactive foundation that while 92 percent of seventh- and eighth-graders said they were likely to attend college, 68 percent said they had little or no information about which classes to take to prepare for it. All too often, students in low-income communities attend schools where teachers and counselors have limited time and resources. In texas, on average, one counselor is responsible for 449 students. In the 990 hours of school time per year, a counselor averages just over 49 minutes to spend with a student per year. (fudge, lammers & lanza, 2018). During this time, counselors address a full spectrum of needs - emotional, academic, disciplinary, in addition to basic college and career planning. In communities where students are often the first in their family to pursue postsecondary education, the lack of information about topics such as sat / act testing, course selection, financial aid, or career options is a barrier that may be too significant to overcome in pursuit of their dreams. In dallas county, that barrier contributes to only 62 percent of high school graduates enrolling in postsecondary education and a mere 30 percent of those students ultimately completing a two-or four- year degree in six years (commit partnership). As a result, out of the roughly 35,000 students who graduate in the dallas region each year, an estimated 25,000 of them are failing to achieve the postsecondary education that will prepare them to achieve their college and/or career goals. This is even more significant when one considers that by 2025, postsecondary education will be required for two-thirds of all jobs in the united states (georgetown university's center on education and the workforce). Without early access to soft skills and college knowledge, thousands of students will lack a pathway to postsecondary education, and thus social mobility and economic security. Since 2012, the roadmap to success program has consistently met this need in the dallas community, providing a critical part of the solution for students who struggle to achieve their postsecondary goals, and for the past two years we have begun to expand outside of dallas to reach more students across the country who deserve access to this critical information. Eod partners with schools and other student-centered programs in the community to implement the roadmap to success program with middle and high school students. The program utilizes a train-the-trainer model to equip teachers with the tools they need to effectively increase expectations, motivation, and college and career knowledge in their classrooms. Eod offers two year-long roadmap to success program packages, introductory (101) and advanced (201), implemented over two consecutive years. The roadmap to success program provides students with 900 additional minutes of active college planning and career preparation discussion. Each package includes the following student and teacher components: interactive roadmap to success student manual: the cornerstone of roadmap to success is the student manual, which enables students, starting in middle school, to gain confidence and skills to navigate the college-going process. The 276-page manual, which is refreshed annually, addresses topics such as the impact of gpa, course selection, and sat/act scores on college selection, applications, and postsecondary success. Templates and activities are included for topics such as interviewing, creating a rsum, evaluating colleges, choosing a major, understanding the value of service and extracurricular activities, and applying for financial aid - all of which are not traditionally taught during the school day. Students keep their "roadmap" upon the program's conclusion to be used as a guide and resource as they navigate to and through high school and prepare for postsecondary success. Teacher curriculum and supports: teachers implementing the program during the school year attend an orientat

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0IN 2017, A NATIONAL SURVEY DONE BY HARRIS INTERACTIVE FOUNDATION THAT WHILE 92 PERCENT OF SEVENTH- AND EIGHTH-GRADERS SAID THEY WERE LIKELY TO ATTEND COLLEGE, 68 PERCENT SAID THEY HAD LITTLE OR NO INFORMATION ABOUT WHICH CLASSES TO TAKE TO PREPARE FOR IT. IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE MISSION OF EDUCATION OPENS DOORS (EOD) IS TO EQUIP STUDENTS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THEY NEED TO REALIZE THEIR COLLEGE AND CAREER POTENTIAL.
