RESEARCH INDICATES THAT STUDENTS WHO PLAN EARLY FOR COLLEGE ARE MORE LIKELY TO ATTEND THAN THOSE WHO DO NOT. HOWEVER, WE KNOW THAT DALLAS STUDENTS ARE NOT RECEIVING INFORMATION REGARDING THE ROUTE TO POST-SECONDARY SUCCESS. THOUGH DALLAS COUNTY HAS AN 84% GRADUATION RATE, ONLY 14% OF GRADUATES ARE DEEMED "COLLEGE-READY." (THE COMMIT! PARTNERSHIP) RESEARCH INDICATES THAT USING THE APPROPRIATE RESOURCES, COLLEGE READINESS PLANNING SHOULD BEGIN IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, FOCUSING ON THE MIDDLE TO HIGH SCHOOL TRANSITION AND INCREASING COLLEGE EXPECTATIONS (RODERICK, 2009). THROUGH THE ROADMAP TO SUCCESS PROGRAM, EOD UNIQUELY ADDRESSES THE NEED TO TEACH COLLEGE KNOWLEDGE AND CAREER SKILLS TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. Roadmap to Success is a data-driven program that is implemented in middle and high schools across Dallas County, as well as at sites throughout Texas through our remote program model. It utilizes a train-the-trainer model to enable teachers to effectively increase expectations, motivation, and college knowledge in their classrooms. EOD offers two of our year-long Roadmap to Success program packages, Introductory (101) and Advanced (201), for our partners to implement over two consecutive years. Each package includes the following core components: An interactive Roadmap to Success student manual composed of group or self-guided learning activities which are accomplished during class periods and for home assignments. An aligned Roadmap to Success curriculum package for teachers containing program goals, instructional methods and tools, essential student materials, and assessments for student learning and success. An online teacher portal that allows teachers and principals to virtually access program resources (lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, and other supplemental materials), as well as an online forum to post questions and engage in discussion with other educators implementing the program across all sites. A professional development seminar provided for teachers at the start of the program that includes an introduction to the organization and program, of the roles of teachers and Impact Managers, an overview of EOD resources (manual, curriculum, etc.), and a guide to using the teacher portal. Weekly or bi-weekly in-school support provided as needed by EOD's Impact Managers to ensure program fidelity. Outcomes-based data collection and analysis provided upon conclusion of the program.The cornerstone of Roadmap to Success is the student manual, which enables students to gain the confidence and skills to navigate the college-going process beginning in middle school. In an engaging format, the 276-page manual addresses non-academic barriers to both high school completion and college enrollment by explaining the impact of their GPA, course selection, and SAT/ACT scores on their college applications and post-secondary success. It offers templates and activities for topics such as interviewing, creating a resume, evaluating post-secondary options and careers, and understanding the value of volunteer service- all of which are not traditionally taught in school. Students keep their "Roadmap" upon the program's conclusion to be used as a guide and resource as they navigate to and through high school and prepare for postsecondary success.Education Opens Doors implements Roadmap to Success by partnering with schools and other student-centered programs. After a contractual agreement with the organization, partners are charged a reduced cost per student enrolled in the one year program.
