IRS990/Description0Program and Membership Support: NAMI offers a wide range of support and public education efforts focusing on educating the public about mental illness, offering resources to those in need and insisting that mental illness become a national priority. Public awareness events and activities including Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), NAMIWalks, and other efforts, successfully combat stigma, promote awareness and encourage understanding. And, by responding to current news events as they happen, NAMI ensures that media reporting is compassionate, understanding and accurate in portrayals of mental illness-NAMI promotes solutions. NAMIWalks - the number one mental health awareness program in America - celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2012. A total of 85 walks with over 135,000 supporters raised almost $10 million. The funds raised will be used to provide educational and support programs at no cost to those impacted by mental illness. NAMI launched its Mental Health Care Gets My Vote! campaign and website to mobilize individuals and families affected by mental illness to participate in the 2012 elections. The website provides information and tools to encourage voter registration and dialogues with candidates. NAMI celebrated the fifth anniversary of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in creative, new ways. The focus in 2012 was to use social media campaigning to raise awareness of minority perspectives. Thousands of organizations hosted events throughout the month, helping to raise awareness in diverse communities.NAMI promoted Mental Illness Awareness Week with the theme this year of "Changing Attitudes, Changing Minds." Continuing its effort to eliminate stigma and to provide public education, NAMI launched a television campaign of public service announcements featuring images of Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill and Mahatma Gandhi, great leaders who each struggled with mental illness. Monuments was distributed to more than 900 TV stations across the country.NAMIBikes rolled out its Fight Stigma & Ride! campaign at three venues across the country. Arizona, Florida and California each held rides in late fall. Each ride was successful, fun and well attended with over 135 riders and 90 volunteers coming out to raise a combined total of $80,000. NAMI published College Students Speak: A Survey Report on Mental Health. The national survey showed that 72 percent of college students experienced a mental health crisis on campus, but nearly one-half did not access campus supports or services. In response, NAMI launched a new NAMI on Campus initiative. The website includes a new resources section, including how to get involved with NAMI on Campus clubs and to connect with others. In addition, StrengthofUs.org, NAMI's social networking website for young adults, relaunched with a new look this fall.

IRS990/MissionDescription0NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, supports and research. NAMI is steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness and building a community for hope for all of those in need. Thousands of members and supporters are the face and voice of the NAMI Movement-families, individuals, friends and businesses-who join us to celebrate recovery, to honor those who have lost their lives to mental illness and to combat stigma, promote awareness, educate and advocate. Mental illness affects everyone. Nearly 60 million Americans experience a mental health condition every year. Regardless of race, age, religion or economic status, mental illness impacts the lives of at least one in four adults and one in 10 children across the United States.
