“NAMI is a member organization. NAMI membership takes three forms: (1) individual members, who belong to local affiliates and whose enrollment determines their respective affiliate's voting power, (2) affiliates, the local NAMI presence and major voting unit within the organization, and (3) state organizations, which each have a vote and serve to support and coordinate the affiliates within their respective states. The affiliates and state organizations vote to elect the NAMI national board of directors and to amend the NAMI bylaws.”
“The annual meeting of the members of NAMI shall be held in the summer unless otherwise directed by the Board of Directors, on such dates and at such place as the Board of Directors shall designate. Voting members representing 20% of the voting power of the membership shall constitute a quorum at any meeting of the members. Voting members shall designate delegates to vote at the annual meeting. Voting members may be represented by written proxy. The delegates shall act by majority vote at any meeting of the voting members at which a quorum is present, except as may be specifically provided to the contrary elsewhere in the Bylaws. Voting may be conducted by absentee ballot, or onsite. All affiliates and state organizations in good standing are eligible to vote. Those delegates whose affiliate or state organization is in good standing but who did not meet the credentialing deadlines may seek to vote on site. Every effort will be made to make this possible, assuming verification of the individual's role and identity can be confirmed.”
“Revisions or amendments may be proposed by any voting member, or by any Director. Any such proposed amendments shall be submitted in writing by United States Postal Service, either by registered mail, certified mail, Express Mail or Priority Mail, or any other USPS service offering Return Receipts or Signature Confirmation to a Bylaws Committee not less than ninety (90) days prior to the date of the next annual meeting. Each voting member shall receive all proposed revisions or amendments to the Bylaws not less than thirty (30) days prior to the next annual meeting. A two-thirds majority of the voting power of the membership voting shall be required to amend the Bylaws.”
“The entire board receives a copy of the return and meets to review, discuss and approve the return for filing.”
“Any employee of NAMI who believes they may have a conflict of interest must indicate those conflicts in writing and send them to the Chief Financial Officer's confidential attention for resolution. The NAMI board monitors potential conflicts of interest by requiring an annual disclosure statement from each member which must be reviewed and updated quarterly, based on updated vendor and donor information, prior to each board meeting. Board members discuss their disclosures quarterly and determine what recusal or other action may be appropriate and under what circumstances. This process is codified in the board's operating policies and procedures manual.”
“The salary for the Executive Director is determined and approved by the Board of Directors. Salary decisions for all employees are made using comparability data for similar positions in comparable organizations.”
“NAMI makes its Form 1023 available upon request. NAMI makes available a public disclosure copy of its Federal Form 990 on its website and upon request.”
“NAMI makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, strategic plan and audited financial statements available for view online.”
“Millions of people in the United States, 1 in 5 or nearly 60 million, face the day-to-day reality of living with a mental illness. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to providing advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives. Below are some of NAMI's accomplishments in the past year.”
“Additional Public Awareness, Partnerships and Outreach highlights in 2016: On May 2, NAMI, philosophy's Hope & Grace Initiative and Women's Health Magazine lit the Empire State Building green, the color of hope, to kick off Mental Health Month. In partnership with the Hope & Grace Initiative, NAMI launched a StigmaFree PSA featuring actress and mental health advocate Mayim Bialik. In addition, NAMI partnered with RPG Limit Break, a weeklong video-gaming marathon for charity. NAMI launched StigmaFree Company, a campaign to unite corporate social responsibility and employee engagement initiatives into a toolkit and outreach effort. The campaign equips companies with tools, resources, assets and information to promote mental health awareness in the workplace, to encourage acceptance and understanding and to take action as part of their efforts to further the larger social good. NAMI's website, www.nami.org, reached more than 7 million visitors. Visitors learned more about mental illnesses, medication and treatment, found support and resources and got involved with advocacy efforts. On social media, NAMI gained 59,000 new followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, bringing the total to over 341,000. NAMI's community helped fight stigma by sharing more than 2,500 personal stories on the Tumblr platforms OK2Talk and You Are Not Alone. Thanks to the advocacy of the NAMI community, NAMI successfully shut down offensive Halloween attractions that used mental illness as scare tactics. This victory was a huge step forward in changing thoughts and behaviors around mental illness. NAMI partnered with the Beacon Bike Ride, a series of day rides from Boston to Miami aimed at raising mental health awareness. Field Capacity: NAMI is the foundation for hundreds of NAMI State Organizations, NAMI Affiliates and volunteers who work in local communities across the country to raise awareness and provide essential and free education, advocacy and support group programs. In 2016, NAMI reviewed 2,000+ re-affiliation documents, approved 97 NAMI Affiliates, and provided 1,000+ hours of technical assistance to the field.”
“Public Policy and Advocacy Highlights from 2016 include the following: NAMI celebrated a milestone in mental health history with the passage of H.R. 34, the 21st Century Cures Act. The bill incorporates measures and funding to help Americans with mental illness get the care they need. NAMI's community supported the law's passage by sending 85,922 emails and tweets to Congress and delivering over 230,000 petition signatures to Senate leaders. NAMI's major reports this year included the following: (1) Starting the Conversation: College and Your Mental Health, a guide to help students and parents talk about mental health; (2) Out-of-Network, Out-of-Pocket, Out-of-Options: The Unfulfilled Promise of Mental Health Parity, which describes barriers that people with mental health conditions encounter in finding mental health providers who are in their health insurance plan's network; (3) Engagement: A New Standard for Mental Health Care, which focuses on relationships between people with mental illness and service providers, families and the broader community; and (4) On Pins & Needles: Caregivers of Adults with Mental Illness, which identifies inadequacies in the U.S. health care system.”
“Additional Accomplishments from 2016: NAMIWalks hosted more than 80 Walks that promoted awareness and wellness. The funds raised by the Walks help NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Local Affiliates provide educational and support programs at no cost to those impacted by mental illness and their families. The NAMI HelpLine (800-950-NAMI) recruited and trained more than 70 volunteers, who responded to more than 50,000 requests from individuals needing support, referral and information. More than 65 fact sheets on a variety of topics are available along with referrals to NAMI Local Affiliates across the country. NAMI partnered with Crisis Text Line to provide text support to people in need. Within 30 days, 350 people had received support by texting "NAMI" to 741741. NAMI converted 124,000 words for the NAMI Basics program into plain language, reviewed 38 manuals with 17,000 pages and approximately 5,000,000 words; and trained 150 people at Train the Trainer-activities with a potential reach of 480,000 people. NAMI launched the Early Psychosis Project, which provides tip sheets and guidance on how to recognize the signs of first-episode psychosis in youth and young adults. NAMI's popular Ask the Doctor webinar series returned, reaching over 850 people. The 2016 NAMI National Convention hosted 1,850 attendees who attended 115 sessions on the theme of "Act. Advocate. Achieve."”
“Subcontractors: Program service expenses 1,072,878. Management and general expenses 67,013. Fundraising expenses 248,682. Total expenses 1,388,573.”
“NAMI's Audit Committee assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of its independent accountant. This process is consistent with previous years.”
“Funding for the payment of obligations and mission-related expenses, administrative expenses and the growth of financial surplus while seeking to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment funds.”
“Management evaluated NAMI's tax positions and concluded that NAMI's financial statements do not include any uncertain tax positions.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Public Awareness, Partnerships and Outreach: Throughout the year, but particularly during Mental Health Month in May, NAMI launched campaigns to raise public awareness of mental illness and inspire action. Such campaigns fought stigma, provided support, educated the public and advocated for equal care. Here are some highlights: NAMI was named a charity of choice for FoxSports on Jan. 1, kicking off a two-year public awareness and education initiative with the sports network. See Schedule O for additional Public Awareness, Partnerships and Outreach Accomplishments in 2016. |
