Mission

The purpose of kankakee county community services, inc. Is to help people improve their lives by empowering families, individuals and communities to become sustainable, while raising sensitivity regarding the effects of poverty.

The purpose of kankakee county community services, inc. Shall be to generate and stimulate available local, private, state and federal resources toward enabling low-income families and individuals to attain the skills, knowledge, motivations, and opportunities to become self-sufficient. Kankakee county community services, inc. Shall seek to be a catalyst and advocate for the interest of the poor in order to make the area served more responsive to the needs of low-income persons and families and to bring about greater institutional sensitivity to their condition.

Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america requires accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which provides guidance on how to measure and account for various tax positions. As of december 31, 2013, the agency had no amounts related to unrecognized income tax benefits and no amounts related to accrued interest and penalties. The agency does not anticipate any significant changes to unrecognized income tax benefits over the next year.

THERE ARE THREE COMPONENTS TO THE WEATHERIZATION PROGRAM: MECHANICAL, ARCHITECTURAL AND HEALTH AND SAFETY. MECHANICAL COMPONENT ADDRESSES THE HEATING AND COOLING OPERATIONAL SYSTEM, HOT WATER HEATER AND THE VENTILATION OF THE HOME. ARCHITECTURAL COMPONENT ADDRESSES THE WHOLE HOUSE WITH INCLUDES THE OUTER SHELL, THE INSULATION, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND AIR SEALING. HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTECTS THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF THE CLIENT AND THEIR FAMILY AS WELL AS THE IHWAP WORKERS.LOW INCOME HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LIHEAP):THE LIHEAP IS A PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES AN OFFSET TO THE HIGH COST OF HEAT RELATED UTILITIES FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES. FOR HOUSEHOLDS THAT ARE DISCONNECTED FROM A HEATING SOURCE, THE RE-CONNECT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM PROVIDES GUIDELINES TO HELP GET THE HOUSEHOLD SERVICES RESTORED UPON COMPLETION OF APPLICATION.THE EMERGENCY FURNACE PROGRAM PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO LOW-INCOME HOMEOWNERS WITH A NON-OPERATIONAL FURNACE.THE PIPP PROGRAM REQUIRES PARTICIPATING CUSTOMERS TO PAY 10% OF THEIR HOUSEHOLD INCOME EACH MONTH TO MAINTAIN GAS AND/OR ELECTRIC SERVICE.COMED CARE ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS OFFER THE RESIDENTIAL SPECIAL HARDSHIP FUND FOR HOUSEHOLDS IN NEED. THIS GRANT PROVIDES ASSISTANCE BEYOND OTHER PROGRAMS TO ADDRESS SPECIAL HARDSHIP CASES.OUR LIHEAP PROGRAM SERVICED AN EXTIMATED TOTAL OF 3,714 LOW INCOME FAMILIES IN KANKAKEE COUNTY. THE DAYS OF CARE PROVIDED WERE 194 BUSINESS DAYS.

ELIGIBLE INDIVIDUALS ARE PLACED AT NON-PROFIT AGENCIES WHERE THEY CAN OBTAIN TRAINING TO UTILIZE IN THEIR PURSUANCE OF UNSUBSIDIZED PLACEMENT. DURING THEIR TRAINING EXPERIENCES, THEY WORK 20 HOURS A WEEK AT MINIMUM WAGE. DURING 2013, 48 INDIVIDUALS IN KANKAKEE AND WILL COUNTY WERE PROVIDED TRAINING POSITIONS THAT TOTALED 28,936.25 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS. CLUB BOOMERS & MEALS ON WHEELS:THE CLUB BOOMERS SENIOR SERVICES PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR SENIORS 60 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER. KCCSI OFFERS THE MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM TO THE HOMEBOUND IN KANKAKEE COUNTY. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES NUTRITIONALLY BALANCED MEALS TO HELP ENSURE THAT THE DIETARY NEEDS OF THE SENIORS ARE BEING MET. IN ADDITION, KCCSI OPERATES 4 DINING CENTERS FOR THOSE SENIORS WHO ARE MOBILE AND ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVITIES, TRIPS, EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS AND LUNCHES THAT ARE PROVIDED DAILY IN OUR SITES. ISOLATION AND LONELINESS ARE SERIOUS ISSUES THAT AFFECT OUR SENIOR POPULATION. OFFERING A SAFE AND COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR SENIORS TO ATTEND ALLOWS THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEND TIME WITH FRIENDS AND SATISFY THEIR NEED FOR COMPANIONSHIP AS WELL AS TO MEET THEIR NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS. THE YOUR MONEY YOUR LIFE CURRICULUM FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION IS USED TO ENHANCE THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE.194 FAMILIES WERE PROVIDED RENTAL ASSISTANCE IN THE FORM OF A ONE-TIME PAYMENT TO THE LANDLORD TO HELP WITH FAMILY STABILITY. 800 NIGHTS OF SHELTER WERE GIVEN TO 160 FAMILIES WHO DUE TO THEIR PRESENT SITUATION BECAME HOMELESS.THE FOOD PANTRY PROVIDED FOOD TO HELP 3,027 UNDUPLICATED INDIVIDUALS MEET THEIR NUTRITIONAL NEEDS BY PROVIDING A WIDE VARIETY OF FOOD CHOICES.INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED TO 2,211 INDIVIDUALS IN THE FORM OF INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL REFERRALS TO HELP THEM FIND THE SERVICES THAT ARE NEEDED.FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAM:THIS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE TRAINING ON FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT USING THE YOUR MONEY YOUR LIFE CURRICULUM. KCCSI HAS AN INSTRUCTOR CERTIFIED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS IN FINANCIAL LITERACY. THIS CURRICULUM OFFERS TRAINING IN MANAGING FINANCES, SAVINGS, CREDIT, DEBT MANAGEMENT AND PREDETORY LENDING. PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER, TYJUAN HAGLER, CAME OUT TO MEET THE KIDS AND TEACH THEM THE BASIC FUNDAMENTALS OF FOOTBALL. THE 111 YOUTH IN ATTENDANCE WERE ALSO ENTERTAINED BY THE JESSE WHITE TUMBLERS, ENJOYED LUNCH FROM MCDONALDS AND WON AN ASSORTMENT OF RAFFLES SUCH AS BIKES, FOOTBALLS, SCOOTERS AND SKATEBOARDS.THROUGH THE STUDENT EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM & FINANCIAL LITERACY, STUDENTS WERE PRESENTED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE WORKFORCE THROUGH HANDS ON EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES. KCCSI HAD AN OVERWHELMING RESPONSE OF YOUTH AND SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS WHO SOUGHT INTEREST IN THE PROGRAM RESULTING IN A WAITING LIST. ALL YOUTH WERE ENROLLED ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS AND WERE ASSIGNED TO A LOCATION AS DETERMINED BY THE PROGRAM COORDINATOR. THESE YOUTH WERE EMPLOYED FOR A MAXIMUM OF 20 HOURS A WEEK AT MINIMUM WAGE. KCCSI HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF WORKING WITH 12 ORGANIZATIONS TO EMPLOY YOUTH THAT INCLUDED THE BRADLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY, THE BOURBONNAIS PARK DISTRICT, CITY OF KANKAKEE, GARDEN OF PRAYER YOUTH CENTER, KANKAKEE FARMER'S MARKET, KANKAKEE PUBLIC LIBRARY, KANKAKEE VALLEY PARK DISTRICT, LIMESTONE PARK DISTRICT, PEMBROKE COMMUNITY CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT, RIVER VALLEY SPECIAL RECREATION ASSOCIATION, THE SALVATION ARMY, AND THE VILLAGE OF BRADLEY. THROUGH THESE ENTITIES, YOUTH WORKED POSITIONS IN, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, MAINTENANCE, CLEANING, CLERICAL, CAMP COUNSELORS, SOCIAL SERVICES, STOCKING, GARDENING AND ANIMAL GROOMING. SEVERAL YOUTH EMPLOYEES MADE SUCH A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THEIR WORKSITE EMPLOYERS, THAT THEY HAVE BEEN HIRED DIRECTLY TO WORK FOR THOSE ENTITIES AFTER TURNING 18 AND GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL.YOUTH WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM WERE REQUIRED TO ATTEND A FINANCIAL LITERACY CLASS. A KCCSI CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR TAUGHT THE YOUTH THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MANAGING A CHECKING ACCOUNT, THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MONEY MANAGEMENT, SAVINGS, CREDIT AND PREDATORY LENDING. THESE YOUTH ALSO ATTENDED AN INTERVIEW ETIQUETTE WORKSHOP THAT FOLLOWED THE FINANCE CLASS. THE INTERVIEW WORKSHOP INFORMED THE YOUTH OF THE DO'S AND DONT'S OF INTERVIEWING. A SURPRISINGLY POPULAR PIECE OF THE WORKSHOP WAS THE INTERACTIVE MOCK INTERVIEWS. 99 YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN THIS PROGRAM COMPONENT AND OF THOSE 76 ENGAGED IN FINANCIAL LITERACY CLASS.
