Activity 2

Entrepreneurship: entrepreneurship and the commercialization of knowledge are fundamental components of our regions neweconomy strategy. The key elements of any robust entrepreneurial ecosystem are the creation of newentrepreneurs, the development of systems to transfer knowledge into the marketplace, and providing asupportive and nurturing environment for new companies to grow and prosper. Engenuitysc firmly planted aflag in the ground for our region by focusing its efforts on tackling some of the most challenging elements ofour entrepreneurial ecosystem. In fy11, engenuitysc continued management of a u.s. Small businessadministration grant focused on expanding entrepreneurial education programs like fasttrac and k-12business boot camps. The grant also allowed us to focus on building more entrepreneurial support resourceslike the midlands entrepreneurship resource network and entrepreneur after five (ea5).

Activity 3

Inovation clusters:the 2010 calendar year saw continued growth in the midlands key centers of industry activity such as nuclear energy and insurance technology & services. Engenuitysc, in partnership with the south carolina council on competitiveness, the navigating from good 2 great foundation, the greater columbia chamber of commerce,and other key partners continued to invest in emerging clusters in our region like hydrogen & fuel cells, while continually exploring new industry opportunities in areas like healthcare and health sciences.another cluster in our region, insurance technology & services, continued to grow with announcements likeaflac's acquisition and expansion into the columbia region, new landing parties in health informationtechnology such as quality software services inc., and the expansion of duck creek technologies, a leading provider of insurance software and services.the nuclear energy renaissance is fully underway with over $10 billion in capital investment in new nuclear capacity occurring within the region by scana, and the launch of a new economic development collaborative focused on maximizing the nuclear energy opportunity for our region.the usc-columbia fuel cell collaborative continued to grow columbia's nationally ranked reputation forinnovation in hydrogen and fuel cells with over $5,000,000 in federal projects announced in the region and two new startup companies planned for 2011. Additionally, the university of south carolina's global reputation for innovation in health sciences was recognized with the city of columbia announcing the 1st world congress on ultrasound taking place in 2011; with over 1,000 attendees from around the world expected.
