“The mission of the PRODEV Foundation is to offer children from vulnerable communities, access to quality education. We believe that education is the only solution and the path for progress and development in Haiti. PRODEVs approach is built on a child-centered, constructivist theory of learning based on the assumption that learning is more effective when the child is actively engaged in the process. Our methodology represents a dramatic break from traditional pedagogic strategies which have relegated Haitian learners to a passive role limited to memorizing facts and reciting them to teachers. Our approach is adapted to Haitian culture and traditions and avoids the literal duplication of practices which have been successful elsewhere. We believe that teachers must be trained to forgo antiquated practices and encouraged to implement teaching strategies which presume that learning is about building upon student knowledge and understanding of his or her environment. This approach requires that teachers create an enriching environment with all resources needed to ignite their students ability to become well rounded humans and civically engaged citizens. Over the past two and a half decades, PRODEV has established two model schools serving nearly 1,000 children and has provided pedagogical leadership for more than a dozen additional schools throughout Haitis south and Grande Anse departments, reaching more than 39,000 children each year. Through this work, PRODEV has created resources and teacher training programs on whole child education, early childhood development, disaster preparedness in schools, and more. The Ecole Nouvelle Zoranje (ENZ), financed by Prodev USA Foundations funds, was built in the wake of the 2010 earthquake to serve families in the vulnerable and impoverished communities of Village la Renaissance, Cite Soleil and Canaan. The beautiful campus is an oasis that includes classrooms, a computer lab and art studio, fully stocked library, athletic grounds and a large open-air cafeteria.
