Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

The 990 is prepared by an independent accounting firm with assistance from the Executive Director. Upon completion of the return, an initial draft of the 990 is reviewed by the Executive Director and the Board Treasurer. Once the draft has been internally reviewed and any revisions made, a copy of the 990 is provided either in person or by email to all board members for approval prior to filing the return with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

Every Board member is provided a copy of the conflict of interest policy when they join the Board. At the beginning of each fiscal year, every Board member is provided with a listing of DC Greens' major vendors and is requested to sign a statement that declares that they know of no current conflicts of interest, or provide a statement of any conflicts of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15A

In setting the compensation of the Executive Director, DC Greens adheres to a compensation-setting process that includes: 1. Review of the proposed compensation by independent members of the Board or compensation committee; 2. Review of published comparability data for compensation paid by similarly situated organizations of similar size, and; 3. Deliberation and contemporaneous documentation (meeting minutes) of this information by independent members of the Board or compensation committee. The Executive Director's compensation is set after board's executive compensation task force reviews standard salaries and raises for our industry. The board meets without the Executive Director in a closed meeting to determine her compensation for the year prior to the year beginning.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 18

Form 1023 (including all related correspondence), IRS determination letter, and Form 990 for the three most recently completed tax periods are available to the public upon request.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

Governing documents, conflict of interest policies, and financial statements are not usually made available for public inspection. Requests from donors are generally granted for the organization's financial statements, and an annual report of activities and accomplishments is posted on the organization's website.

IRS990/Desc0Food Access (Produce Rx): DC Greens believes access to healthy food is a basic human right. Our Produce Rx program, which advances a Food Is Medicine approach, allows medical professionals to prescribe fresh fruits and vegetables to patients with diet-related chronic illnesses. Patients receive up to $120/mo. to spend in the produce aisle and redeem their prescriptions at their local grocery stores. We also previously piloted the Produce Plus program, which provides vouchers for 25k+ low-income D.C. residents annually to shop for fresh, local produce at city farmers' markets. This program changed the landscape of healthy food access in the city. At the end of 2021, DC Greens completed our pilot and Produce Plus became a permanent part of the D.C. food system.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The Well at Oxon Run: The Well at Oxon Run is DC Greens' place-based iniative and up-stream intervention to support health equity. It sits on one acre of land, 20,000 square feet of which is dedicated to fruit and vegetable production for the surrounding community in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Southeast DC. We spent three years visioning this space with community leaders, long-time neighborhood residents, and local non-profit organizations and opened the space in 2022. In addition to seasonal crop production, The Well also offers large community convening spaces (including an outdoor classroom) and hosts art, culture, fitness, and other events throughout the season. This is a space for all community members to work in the soil, celebrate and share experiences in nature together.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0General programs: General program support includes but is not limited to: DC Greens' participation in commissions and collaboratives that advance our mission of health equity in the District; collaboration and strategy sessions with other nonprofit leaders that span multiple programs; getting general information to the public about our programs and mission as a whole; general programmatic support that is not specific to any one program but benefits all programs. In an effort to work collaboratively, we have partnered with more than 80 non-profits.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0Food Advocacy & Policy: DC City Council and government agencies share our desire to build a healthy food system in the nation's capital, as evidenced by the breadth of existing food related legislation. DC Greens collaborates with colleagues and legislators to craft food policy that will advance health equity, such as the No Senior Hungry Act, and advocates for policy that supports the sector's work on the ground, such as Give SNAP a Raise. We also collaborate with other non profits to advocate for policy change through coalitions (e.g. Food Is Medicine and DC Fair Budget Coalition), and are involved in helping to shape policy related to food access at all levels of DC government.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1Lobbying: Activities to pass and amend legislation that creates a more just and resilient food system.
