Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

The 990 is prepared by an independent accounting firm with assistance from the Executive Director. Upon completion of the return, an initial draft of the 990 is reviewed by the Executive Director and the Board Treasurer. Once the draft has been internally reviewed and any revisions made, a copy of the 990 is provided either in person or by email to all board members for approval prior to filing the return with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

Every Board member is provided a copy of the conflict of interest policy when they join the Board. At the beginning of each fiscal year, every Board member is provided with a listing of DC Greens' major vendors and is requested to sign a statement that declares that they know of no current conflicts of interest, or provide a statement of any conflicts of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15A

In setting the compensation of the Executive Director, DC Greens adheres to a compensation-setting process that includes: 1. Review of the proposed compensation by independent members of the Board or compensation committee; 2. Review of published comparability data for compensation paid by similarly situated organizations of similar size, and; 3. Deliberation and contemporaneous documentation (meeting minutes) of this information by independent members of the Board or compensation committee. The Executive Director's compensation is set after board's executive compensation task force reviews standard salaries and raises for our industry. The board meets without the Executive Director in a closed meeting to determine her compensation for the year prior to the year beginning.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 18

Form 1023 (including all related correspondence), IRS determination letter, and Form 990 for the three most recently completed tax periods are available to the public upon request.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

Governing documents, conflict of interest policies, and financial statements are not usually made available for public inspection. Requests from donors are generally granted for the organization's financial statements, and an annual report of activities and accomplishments is posted on the organization's website.

Form 990, Part I, Line 1

Through education and access, DC Greens is bridging the gaps in our local food system to ensure that all residents of the District have a deeper connection to the sources of their food and can afford fresh, local fruit and vegetables. DC Greens works across multiple institutions, bringing people together so that we may work collectively toward a more local food system. Our two main programs are Food Access (provides added funds for low-income patrons to shop at farmers' markets, and includes a Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program), and School Garden Programs (includes professional development workshops for garden-based education to ensure that existing gardens are maximized).

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Food Access Program: Administration and funding of a program that gives additional monies to recipients of three federal food programs: the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC), and the Senior Farmers' market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) so that they may better afford fresh, local fruits and vegetables while bringing federal dollars into the local farm economy. We also run a Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program whereby doctors prescribe fruits and vegetables to patients who are at high-risk for obesity-related chronic health problems. These patients then fill their prescriptions at five participating farmers' markets. During 2013, 53% of patients enrolled in the program saw a decrease in their Body Mass Index Percentile (BMI) over the course of 6 months. The hospital also saw an increase of 68% in retention rates for preventative health visits because the patients were eager to receive their prescriptions.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Farm- to- School Programs: DC Greens is the "state lead" organization for the National Farm to school Network. Through our Farm-to-School programs, DC Greens provides experiential opportunities for DC public and charter school students to connect with their food. We help schools coordinate chef demos and farm field trips. DC Greens also leads workshops with teachers to train them in how to build bridges between the cafeteria and the classroom. Growing Healthy Schools Week is a key event in our farm-to-school programming - an annual city-wide event that provides more than 10,000 students at 63 schools with a learning experience associated with local foods.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0Farmers' Market Program: Community-based farmers' market to increase access to local foods, support local farm economy, and provide educational experiences for young market patrons. Roughly 500 patrons attended each week of the season.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1Rooting DC: Free urban gardening educational forum that provides more than 60 hands-on agricultural workshops to over 1,000 residents from all wards of Washington, DC. DC Greens took over this annual event in 2012 though Rooting DC is in its seventh year. More than 80 DC nonprofits working in food access and urban agriculture run tables in the info area making this a key meeting ground for education and collaboration.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2General programs: General program support includes but is not limited to: DC Greens' participation in commissions and collaboratives that advance our mission of food justice, access, and education in the District; collaboration and strategy sessions with other nonprofit leaders that span multiple programs; getting out general information to the public about our programs and missions as a whole; general programmatic support that is not specific to anyone program but benefits all programs. Our programs have reached 75 D.C. schools, 15,000 students and 3,000 low-income community members struggling to afford healthy food. In an effort to work collaboratively, we have partnered with more than 80 nonprofits.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Through education and access, DC Greens is bridging the gaps in our local food system to ensure that all residents of the District have a deeper connection to the sources of their food and can afford fresh, local fruit and vegetables.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1The 990 is prepared by an independent accounting firm with assistance from the Executive Director. Upon completion of the return, an initial draft of the 990 is reviewed by the Executive Director and the Board Treasurer. Once the draft has been internally reviewed and any revisions made, a copy of the 990 is provided either in person or by email to all board members for approval prior to filing the return with the IRS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Every Board member is provided a copy of the conflict of interest policy when they join the Board. At the beginning of each fiscal year, every Board member is provided with a listing of DC Greens' major vendors and is requested to sign a statement that declares that they know of no current conflicts of interest, or provide a statement of any conflicts of interest.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3In setting the compensation of the Executive Director, DC Greens adheres to a compensation-setting process that includes: 1.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4Form 1023 (including all related correspondence), IRS determination letter, and Form 990 for the three most recently completed tax periods are available to the public upon request.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5Governing documents, conflict of interest policies, and financial statements are not usually made available for public inspection. Requests from donors are generally granted for the organization's financial statements, and an annual report of activities and accomplishments is posted on the organization's website.
