I-Park's Mission: Nurturing artists and the creative process in the fine arts and in nature. I-Park is both an open-air and a closed-studio laboratory for individual creative pursuits in the fields of music composition/sound art, visual arts, architecture, moving image, creative writing and landscape/garden/ecological design. It also initiates and sponsors specially-themed inter-disciplinary and collaborative projects for the purpose of moving these ideas out of the laboratory setting and bringing them to life in the public domain.I-Park supports these investigations through its international artists-in-residence program, the aesthetic engagement of its natural and built environments and with on-site exhibitions, performances and collegial exchanges.
Primarily through its international artists-in-residence program, I-Park nurtures artistic creativity and excellence, in the abstract and at the level of the individual artist. I-Park also has a specific interest in site-responsive art and makes its expansive grounds available to those working in this field. I-Park's core General Residency Program brings together a multi-disciplinary mix of artists developing promising ideas, and creating new works, in a quiet, intimate, retreat-type setting. I-Park prides itself on the high level of personalized attention given to the artists as they strive to realize their most ambitious artistic goals.

“I-Park has its Form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm. But first, I-Park's Finance Committee performs an internal review that looks at changes and emerging trends from previous accounting periods, internal control issues, changes (if any) in tax laws and the overall quality of the record keeping. After the Form 990 has been prepared by the outside firm, it is reviewed by the President and Treasurer before being sent to the board of directors for their feedback. A conference call among the officers and board members is organized if there are any substantive questions or concerns. Upon approval, the document is submitted to the Internal Revenue Service by the independent accounting firm.”
“At each annual meeting, all directors and officers sign off on a memo that restates the organization's Conflicts of Interest Policy. At that time, any actual or perceived conflicts are disclosed and discussed. If conflicts of either sort have developed during the course of the year, the matter is resolved by either eliminating the conflict or by memorializing the issue in the minutes, indicating why an actual conflict did, or does/did not, in fact, exist or memorializing why any exceptions to the policy have caused no harm and were, in fact, in the best interests of the organization. In the case of any material issues that come to the attention of the Governance Committee or the board, a legal opinion may be sought.”
“The Foundation makes its Forms 990 and 1023 available for public inspection as required under Section 6104 of the Internal Revenue Code. The return is posted on guidestar.org and similar websites. In addition, the financial statements, Conflicts of Interest Policy, Articles of Incorporation, Form 990, Form 1023 and By-laws are available upon written request or by calling the organization directly.”
“Artists at times contribute gifts of artworks at the end of their residencies. This is not a requirement nor even an expectation. It is a way that an I-Park fellow can show his/her personal gratitude for their experience. The artworks are logged into a book and are either put on display or stored away for future display. Up until recently, we never considered selling these pieces. We look at them as part of the organization's archives, a way to mark the passage of these artists through our program and to share that history with visitors. The economic, as opposed to sentimental, value of these pieces would be very difficult to ascertain. In recent years, in an effort to create new funding sources, we have begun to solicit, from I-Park fellows (post-residency) and others, gifts of artworks that can sold at auction at our fundraising events, in particular, our annual gala. The artist provides guidance as to the commercial value of the gift, which helps us to establish minimum bids. The market value, as recognized on our books, is based on the actual sale price at the event. Unsold artworks are put into inventory for future sale. In any event, we never sell any of these works without the written permission of the artist.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | I-Park's core activity is its General Residency Program. Mixed-discipline groups, generally 6-7 artists at a time, spend a month together at the I-Park facility. They are provided with a private bedroom, private studio, meals program, workshop and other shared spaces, enthusiastic staff support and open access to an expansive, varied natural landscape with miles of art/nature trails. While most participants are primarily devoted to studio practice, many choose to explore the limitless creative potential afforded by the I-Park grounds. The residencies are fully-funded; artists' only costs are for travel to and from the area and their own art materials. While the General Residency Program was on pause in 2020, the staff kept in touch with the artists who were awarded 2020 residencies, rescheduling most of them into 2021 slots. Numerous repair and maintenance projects were undertaken as well as considerable programmatic planning for the 2021 season. |

| IRS990/MissionDesc | 0 | I-Park's Mission: Nurturing artists and the creative process in the fine arts and in nature. I-Park is both an open-air and a private-studio laboratory for individual creative pursuits in the fields of music composition/sound art, visual arts, architecture, new media, creative writing and landscape/garden/ ecological design. It also initiates and sponsors specially-themed inter-disciplinary and collaborative projects for the purpose of moving these ideas out of the laboratory setting and bringing them to life in the public domain. I-Park supports these investigations through its international artists-in-residence program, the aesthetic engagement of its natural and built environments and with on-site exhibitions, performances and collegial exchanges. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | I-Park's customary artists-in-residence program was put on hiatus in 2020 due to health and safety concerns relating to the COVID-19 virus. But because we maintained essential staffing throughout 2020 (Residency Program Director, property maintenance staff, grant writing, bookkeeping/accounting), we had the capacity to shift gears and direct our energies to the critical need in our community for COVID-safe, open-air experiences including exercise and sensory inspiration. Through our Open Trails Initiative, we created 13 pilot events (10 of which were free to the public): Open Trails, Plein Air Painting Day, a Family Day, Founder's Guided Art Walks, Volunteers' Days and the Blood Moon Masquerade. I-Park's 25 art/nature trails were transformed "overnight" into a shared resource for the regional public. Considerable effort was made to enhance the safety, comfort and aesthetics of the trails and guest feedback was uniformly complimentary. Over the course of 2020, 800 (mostly first time) visitors were introduced to our 450-acre nature preserve, populated with over 50 ephemeral artworks. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc | 0 | I-Park was slated to host its fourth Composers + Musicians Collaborative Residency in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 induced hiatus and the fact that this program runs on a biennial cycle, the residency has been re-programed for 2022. I-Park commissions a highly accomplished chamber ensemble and makes it available to a group of 5 composers for a 2-week onsite residency. Prior to the residency, semi-complete new works are submitted by the composers to the ensemble for adjudication. Awardees are invited to I-Park for an intensive regimen of readings, workshops and rehearsals. The composers and ensemble collaborate intimately to put the finishing touches on the new works. Trust and collegiality are fostered by the shared lodging, meals and informal social activities. The program results in the refinement of 5 challenging new works and a high state of concert-readiness. The residency culminates in an all-premieres concert in Connecticut and again at a New York City venue. The program is fully-funded for all participants and each composer receives a $1,000 stipend and a studio recording of his or her new piece. The 2018 ensemble-in-residence estimated that, three years out, the works created during the residency were heard by over 5,000 audience members at various venues throughout the U.S. The 2018 program was funded, in part, by an NEA grant for $20,000 and two private foundation grants totaling $15,000. |

| IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | Artists at times contribute gifts of artworks at the end of their residencies. In any event, we never sell any of these works without the written permission of the artist. |

| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | I-Park has its Form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm. Upon approval, the document is submitted to the Internal Revenue Service by the independent accounting firm. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 1 | At each annual meeting, all directors and officers sign off on a memo that restates the organization's Conflicts of Interest Policy. In the case of any material issues that come to the attention of the Governance Committee or the board, a legal opinion may be sought. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 2 | The Foundation makes its Forms 990 and 1023 available for public inspection as required under Section 6104 of the Internal Revenue Code. The return is posted on guidestar.org and similar websites. In addition, the financial statements, Conflicts of Interest Policy, Articles of Incorporation, Form 990, Form 1023 and By-laws are available upon written request or by calling the organization directly. |
