Mission and Program Overview

Mission

I-Park's Mission: Nurturing artists and the creative process in the fine arts and in nature. I-Park is both an open-air and a closed-studio laboratory for individual creative pursuits in the fields of music composition/sound art, visual arts, architecture, moving image, creative writing and landscape/garden/ecological design. It also initiates and sponsors specially-themed inter-disciplinary and collaborative projects for the purpose of moving these ideas out of the laboratory setting and bringing them to life in the public domain.I-Park supports these investigations through its international artists-in-residence program, the aesthetic engagement of its natural and built environments and with on-site exhibitions, performances and collegial exchanges.

Primarily through its international artists-in-residence program, I-Park nurtures artistic creativity, in the abstract and at the level of the individual artist. I-Park also has a specific interest in site-responsive art and makes its expansive grounds available to those working in this field. I-Park's core General Residency Program brings together a multi-disciplinary mix of artists developing promising ideas, and creating new works, in a quiet, retreat-type environment.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 2

Ralph Crispino, Jr. and Scot Leavitt have a business relationship.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

The Foundation has its Form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm. It has established a review process to ensure that the information reported is complete and accurate and that input is solicited from the board of directors. Once the Form 990 has been prepared by the outside firm, it is reviewed by the President and Executive Director. Next, it is e-mailed to the board for review. A subsequent conference call among the officers and board is organized to elicit questions and comments. Upon approval, the document is submitted to the Internal Revenue Service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

At each annual meeting, all directors and officers sign off on a memo that restates the Foundation's Conflicts of Interest Policy. At that time, any actual or perceived conflicts are reported or disclosed and discussed. If conflicts of either sort have developed during the course of the year, the matter is resolved by either eliminating the conflict or by memorializing the issue in the minutes, indicating why an actual conflict did, or does not, in fact, exist - or explaining why any exceptions to the policy have caused no harm. In the case of any material issues that come to the attention of the board, a legal opinion may be sought. I-Park has relationships with two law firms which are available to assist in instances such as this.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The Foundation makes its Forms 990 and 1023 available for public inspection as required under Section 6104 of the Internal Revenue Code. The return is posted on guidestar.org and similar websites. In addition, the financial statements, Conflicts of Interest Policy, Articles of Incorporation, Form 990, Form 1023 and By-laws are available upon written request or by calling the organization directly.

Financial Statement Notes

Part III, Line 4:

Artists at times leave gifts of artworks at the end of their residencies. This is not a requirement nor even an expectation. It is a way that an I-Park fellow can show his/her personal gratitude for their experience. The artworks are logged into a book and are either put on display or stored away for future display. We have never considered selling any of these pieces. We look at them as part of the organization's archives, a way to mark the passage of these artists through our program and to share this history with visitors to the facility. The economic, as opposed to sentimental, value of these pieces would be very difficult to ascertain. In an effort to create a new funding source, we have begun to solicit, from I-Park fellows and others, gifts of artworks that can sold at auction at our fundraising events, in particular, our annual fundraising dinner. The artist provides guidance as to the commercial value of the gift, which helps us to establish minimum bids, but the market value, as recognized on our books, is based on the actual sales price at the event. Unsold artworks are put into inventory for future sale. We have also occasionally asked artists who have made archival gifts if we could enter them into an auction. However, we won't sell the works without written permission.

IRS990/Desc0I-Park's core activity is its General Residency Program. Artists and designers from the following disciplines participate: Visual arts (including environmental art), creative writing, music composition/sound art, moving image, landscape/garden/ecological design and architecture. Mixed-discipline groups, generally 6-7 artists at a time, spend a month together at the I-Park facility. They are provided with a private bedroom, a private studio, a food program, workshop and other shared spaces, enthusiastic staff support - and open access to an expansive, varied natural landscape with miles of art/nature walking trails. While most participants are primarily devoted to studio practice, many choose to explore the limitless creative potential afforded by the I-Park grounds. The residency program is fully-funded; artists' only costs are for travel to and from the area and their own art materials.

IRS990/MissionDesc0I-Park's Mission: Nurturing artists and the creative process - in the fine arts and in nature.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0In 2016, I-Park hosted its second Composers + Musicians Collaborative Residency. A new-music chamber ensemble, consisting of 6 musicians and a music director, was made available to a group of 5 composers for a 2-week onsite residency. During this time, semi-complete new works by the 5 participating composers were presented to the ensemble for an intensive schedule of readings/rehearsals. The composers and ensemble collaborated intimately to put the finishing touches on the works. Trust and collegiality were fostered by the shared lodging experience and shared meals and social activities. The program resulted in the creation of 5 challenging new works brought to a high state of concert-readiness. The program culminated in a world-premiere concert in Connecticut and a New York premiere concert at the Opera Center in New York City. The program was fully-funded for all participants and each composer received a $1,000 stipend.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0I-Park launched an experimental Family Residency in August of 2016. I-Park hosted 4 artists for a 2-week residency. Each artist was accompanied by a spouse, partner or caregiver - and up to two children. The children were provided recreational/educational activities off-site so the artists could work on their creative projects during the day, with minimal interruptions. Each evening, the 4 "families" got together for dinner and socializing. Each group was provided 2 bedrooms as well as the basic offerings of the General Residency Program (above). The program was designed to meet a well-known need in the creative community. Oftentimes, family obligations have a way of derailing the career paths of practicing artists - and most artists-in-residence programs do not have the facilities, staff and skill sets at hand to accommodate families. In fact, it was a challenge for I-Park as well. Some unexpected positive outcomes of the program: the high number of applications received, the exceptional caliber of the artists who participated and the fact that all the children got involved in artistic projects and got along famously, as did the spouses, partners and caregivers.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Artists at times leave gifts of artworks at the end of their residencies.
