Mission and Program Overview

Mission

I-Park's Mission: Nurturing artists and the creative process in the fine arts and in nature. I-Park is both an open-air and a closed-studio laboratory for individual creative pursuits in the fields of music composition/sound art, visual arts, architecture, moving image, creative writing and landscape/garden/ecological design. It also initiates and sponsors specially-themed inter-disciplinary and collaborative projects for the purpose of moving these ideas out of the laboratory setting and bringing them to life in the public domain.I-Park supports these investigations through its international artists-in-residence program, the aesthetic engagement of its natural and built environments and with on-site exhibitions, performances and collegial exchanges.

Primarily through its international artists-in-residence program, I-Park nurtures artistic creativity and excellence, in the abstract and at the level of the individual artist. I-Park also has a specific interest in site-responsive art and makes its expansive grounds available to those working in this field. I-Park's core General Residency Program brings together a multi-disciplinary mix of artists developing promising ideas, and creating new works, in a quiet, intimate, retreat-type setting. I-Park prides itself on the high level of personalized attention given to the artists as they strive to realize their most ambitious artistic goals.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

The Foundation has its Form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm. But first, I-Park's Finance Committee has an internal review process that looks at trends and changes from previous accounting periods, internal control issues, changes (if any) in tax laws and overall quality of the record keeping. After the Form 990 has been prepared by the outside firm, it is reviewed by the President and Treasurer before being sent to the board of directors for their feedback. A conference call among the officers and board members is organized if there are any substantive questions or concerns. Upon approval, the document is submitted to the Internal Revenue Service by the independent accounting firm.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

At each annual meeting, all directors and officers sign off on a memo that restates the organization's Conflicts of Interest Policy. At that time, any actual or perceived conflicts are disclosed and discussed. If conflicts of either sort have developed during the course of the year, the matter is resolved by either eliminating the conflict or by memorializing the issue in the minutes. In certain cases, an actual or perceived conflict may cause no hard and may be in the best interests of the organization. If that's the case, the board will record its reasoning in the minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The Foundation makes its Forms 990 and 1023 available for public inspection as required under Section 6104 of the Internal Revenue Code. The return is posted on guidestar.org and similar websites. In addition, the financial statements, Conflicts of Interest Policy, Articles of Incorporation, Form 990, Form 1023 and By-laws are available upon written request or by calling the organization directly.

Financial Statement Notes

Part III, Line 4:

Artists at times contribute gifts of artworks at the end of their residencies. This is not a requirement nor even an expectation. It is a way that an I-Park fellow can show his/her personal gratitude for their experience. The artworks are logged into a book and are either put on display or stored away for future display. We have never considered selling these pieces. We look at them as part of the organization's archives, a way to mark the passage of these artists through our program and to share that history with visitors. The economic, as opposed to sentimental, value of these pieces would be very difficult to ascertain. In an effort to create new funding sources, we have begun to solicit, from I-Park fellows and others, gifts of artworks that can sold at auction at our fundraising events, in particular, our annual gala. The artist provides guidance as to the commercial value of the gift, which helps us to establish minimum bids, but the market value, as recognized on our books, is based on the actual sales price at the event. Unsold artworks are put into inventory for future sale. We have also occasionally asked artists who have made archival gifts if we could enter them into an auction. However, we don't sell the works without written permission.

IRS990/Desc0I-Park's core activity is its General Residency Program. Artists and designers from the following disciplines participate: visual arts (including environmental art), creative writing, music composition/sound art, new media, landscape/garden/ecological design and architecture. Mixed-discipline groups, generally 6-7 artists at a time, spend a month together at the I-Park facility. They are provided with a private bedroom, private studio, meals program, workshop and other shared spaces, enthusiastic staff support and open access to an expansive, varied natural landscape with miles of art/nature trails. While most participants are primarily devoted to studio practice, many choose to explore the limitless creative potential afforded by the I-Park grounds. The residencies are fully-funded; artists' only costs are for travel to and from the area and their own art materials. In 2019, I-Park hosted 41 artists in the General Residency Program.

IRS990/MissionDesc0I-Park's Mission: Nurturing artists and the creative process in the fine arts and in nature. I-Park is both an open-air and a private-studio laboratory for individual creative pursuits in the fields of music composition/sound art, visual arts, architecture, new media, creative writing and landscape/garden/ecological design. It also initiates and sponsors specially-themed inter-disciplinary and collaborative projects for the purpose of moving these ideas out of the laboratory setting and bringing them to life in the public domain. I-Park supports these investigations through its international artists-in-residence program, the aesthetic engagement of its natural and built environments and with on-site exhibitions, performances and collegial exchanges.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0In 2019, I-Park hosted its seventh Site-Responsive Art Residency & Biennale, a multi-disciplinary exhibition of top-quality works from the field of site-responsive environmental art. The program included a 3-week onsite residency during which the new works were conceived and installed. Nine outstanding works were created for the exhibition. Five of the artists were from the U.S. and four came from overseas. The 2019 Biennale garnered record attendance as the grounds were opened to the public on several occasions from mid-September through November 2020.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0I-Park extended its public programming in 2019. With substantial support from a grant awarded by the State of Connecticut DECD, I-Park totally renovated its Common Area meeting hall where many of its events are hosted. It increased public access to its system of art/nature trails including the Site-Responsive Art Biennale trail. It installed new park benches, had full-house attendance at most of its Open Studios events and once again hosted Connecticut Trails Day. It also raised $1,900 at its September gala to host a "Family Day at I-Park" event in 2020.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Artists at times contribute gifts of artworks at the end of their residencies.

IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0I-Park awarded a $3,500 artist's stipend to each of the nine artists participating in the 2019 Site-Responsive Art Residency & Biennale, as well as a total of $6,500 in travel reimbursements for these artists. In consideration of the stipends and travel reimbursements, each artist committed to create a site-responsive work on the I-Park grounds for the Biennale. An independent curatorial panel adjudicated the applications for this program through a highly competitive process and I-Park's Inter-disciplinary Curatorial Panel, consisting of board members and I-Park fellows, was thoroughly satisfied that all participating artists had honored their obligations and delivered a high quality public exhibition. I-Park also awarded five $500 international travel stipends in 2019. These awards were made to General Residency Program artists who were separately scored and recommended for a residency by their discipline-specific selection panels, again, through a highly competitive process. These grants were established to allow very talented artists from overseas, with limited financial means and the burden of high travel costs, the opportunity to participate in an I-Park residency. The monies for this initiative were raised at the prior year's fundraising gala. These artists enhanced the cultural diversity of the residency population. A three person Grants Committee meets to determine which artists are most in need of this funding in light of the applicants' scores, the overall makeup of the invitation pool and the availability of discipline-specific studio space.
