Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The make it right foundation was incorporated on august 15, 2007, as a delaware not-for-profit corporation, two years after hurricane katrina. It was founded to help implement actor brad pitt's objective to improve the design and performance of affordable housing. Its primary goal is to provide high-quality, energy-efficient housing to families in need, and to improve the development of communities in which they live. The organization's first project was to assist in the sustainable redevelopment of new orleans, in particular, the lower 9th ward. The mission for this project is to be a catalyst for redevelopment by building a neighborhood comprised of safe and healthy homes, inspired by cradle to cradle thinking, with an emphasis on high-quality design, while preserving the spirit of the community's culture. Make it right later amended its bylaws to expand beyond housing in new orleans to help in other areas and to spread its knowledge and intellectual property. Therefore, the revised

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B

Before filing, the Form 990 was reviewed in detail by the Board Chairman, Executive Director, Treasurer, and accounting team. A copy of the Form 990 was provided to all officers and directors before filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C

Make It Right Foundation has a Conflict of Interest Policy. This policy pertains to any director, officer, or member of a committee with powers delegated by the Board of Directors. Each director, officer and member of a committee with Board delegated powers annually signs a statement that affirms such person: a) has received a copy of the Conflict of Interest Policy, b) has read and understands the Policy, c) has agreed to comply with the Policy, d) confirms that no conflict of interest exists and e) understands that Make It Right is a charity and in order to maintain its federal tax exemption it must engage primarily in activities that accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes. Additionally, Make It Right performs periodic reviews to ensure the organization operates in a manner consistent with charitable purposes and does not engage in activities that could jeopardize its tax-exempt status. The reviews include whether compensation arrangements and benefits are reasonable, based on survey information and the result of arm's length bargaining. The policy also determines whether partnerships, joint ventures and arrangements with entities other than Section 501(c)(3) organizations conform to the organization's written policies, are properly recorded, reflect reasonable investment or payments for goods and services, further charitable purposes and do not result in inurement, impermissible private benefit or in an excess benefit transaction. Make It Right's policies mandate that any director with a potential conflict of interest leave the board meeting while the determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. During the time when the board is being developed, if there are insufficient directors qualified to deliberate about a particular conflict issue, the directors will select one or more additional directors or the Executive Director if the conflict does not involve the Executive Director, to engage in the deliberation. The procedure for addressing a conflict of interest is as follows: a) the interested person may make a presentation to the Board, but after the presentation the person must leave, b) the Board will appoint a committee to investigate the conflict of interest, c) after exercising due diligence, the committee will consider whether Make It Right can obtain with reasonable efforts a more advantageous transaction or arrangement from a person or entity that would not give rise to a conflict of interest, d) if a more advantageous transaction or arrangement is not reasonably possible under circumstances not producing a conflict of interest, the committee will determine by a majority vote whether the transaction or arrangement is in Make It Right's best interest, for its own benefit, and whether it is fair and reasonable. Then the committee will present to the Board for final approval. If the Board has a reasonable cause to believe an individual has failed to disclose actual or possible conflicts of interest, it will inform the individual of the basis for such belief and afford the interested person an opportunity to explain the alleged failure to disclose. If after hearing the individuals' response and after making further investigations as warranted, and the Board determines the individual has failed to disclose an actual or possible conflict of interest, then the Board will take appropriate disciplinary and corrective action.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A

The Board of Directors reviews and approves all compensation for the Executive Director, officers and key employees. Compensation is based on industry norms using employee and compensation surveys generated by reputable independent organizations and is typically reviewed every two years. Compensation is also approved in the context of the constraints of the annual budget.

IRS990/Desc0Make It Right was founded to build innovative and sustainable housing for families whose homes were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. In pursuit of that mission, we continue to develop new designs, methods and materials that will improve the performance and environmental effectiveness of affordable housing. We do this by gathering the world's leading experts in design and materials, apply their expertise to our projects and share lessons learned and experience gained with designers and builders around the world. We share our knowledge and experience with the goal of improving the environmental and energy performance of buildings. In 2013, we accomplished the following: 1) Continued to build safe, LEED Platinum certified homes in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward. LEED Platinum is the highest level of certification offered by the U.S. Green Building Council. Make It Right completed construction on nine houses in 2013, bringing our total homes in New Orleans to 98. The Foundation provided nearly $200,000 in down payment and closing cost assistance to low income families for the houses we completed in 2013. An additional 10-15 new homes are expected to break ground in 2014. 2) Continued to work with NeighborWorks America (NWA), the premier affordable housing and community development entity in the US. NWA provides training and strategic guidance for our staff implementing our homeownership counseling and community development programs. Over 100 low-income families were able to access free financial counseling services from Make It Right staff as a result of this partnership. 3) Shared lessons learned at various industry conferences including: Greenbuild, Clinton Global Initiative, Urban Land Institute, Strategic Builders Group and others.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0In November 2013, Make It Right completed an ambitious project in a transitional urban community in the heart of Kansas City. Our building in Kansas City's Manheim Park neighborhood provides affordable housing for more than 150 people and showcases innovative, sustainable redevelopment strategies and design. After a year of discussions with residents and community leaders in the blighted neighborhood, Make It Right committed to redevelop the site of the former Bancroft Elementary School. Built in 1904, the school functioned as a public elementary until 1999 and has remained vacant for the last 13 years. Make It Right and our local partners converted the school into a LEED Platinum housing and community complex, including 50 affordable rental units for youth transitioning out of foster care, veterans and low-income families. Half the housing units are located in the historic school building; the other half are new townhome structures built around the school and designed by Kansas City-based BNIM Architects, American Institute of Architects 2011 Firm of the Year. The Bancroft School redevelopment also includes a community center featuring an auditorium, gymnasium, locker rooms, technology lab, job training center, medical clinic, grocery store and other retail space, along with community gardens, a playground, walking trail and police foot patrol office. Access to these resources is available to all 30,000 residents of the neighborhood, resulting in a healthier, safer community. Make It Right hopes this redevelopment will catalyze additional reinvestment in the community. Make It Right partnered with Dalmark Group and Neighborhood Housing Services to manage the facilities and rental units upon completion of construction.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Make It Right is partnering with the Sioux and Assiniboine tribes of Fort Peck, Montana to build sustainable homes on their reservation. Make It Right will build 20 Cradle to Cradle-inspired, LEED Platinum homes for tribe members in need of housing. Make It Right also committed to develop a sustainable master plan for the entire reservation, which covers thousands of acres and is home to more than 6,000 Native Americans. Currently, more than 600 people are waiting for housing. Overcrowding is a chronic problem on the Fort Peck Reservation where multiple families commonly live together in two bedroom homes. Make It Right's work on the Fort Peck Reservation began in June 2013 with community-driven design meetings. Tribal leaders and future homeowners met with Make It Right's architects and designers to discuss housing needs and vision for their new neighborhood. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2014. The solar-powered homes will have 3-4 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms and be available to tribe members whose income levels are at or below 60% of the Area Median Income. A percentage of the homes will be dedicated to senior adult and disabled veteran housing. Homeownership will be structured through a Low Income Housing Tax Credit Rent-to-Own program with ownership transferring to the tenant after 15 years of renting.
