Mission and Program Overview
Mission
The make it right foundation was incorporated on august 15, 2007, as a delaware not-for-profit corporation, two years after hurricane katrina. It was founded to help implement actor brad pitt's objective to improve the design and performance of affordable housing. Its primary goal is to provide high-quality, energy-efficient housing to families in need, and to improve the development of communities in which they live. The organization's first project was to assist in the sustainable redevelopment of new orleans, in particular, the lower 9th ward. The mission for this project is to be a catalyst for redevelopment by building a neighborhood comprised of safe and healthy homes, inspired by cradle to cradle thinking, with an emphasis on high-quality design, while preserving the spirit of the community's culture. - Make It Right partnered with Help USA in Newark, NJ to build a 56-unit multi-family building for disabled veterans. Working within publically funded budget constraints, our goal in Newark was to construct an ultra-green building for the same cost as a conventional structure. Becoming the first LEED Platinum building in the area, the apartment complex includes sustainable features like solar power and a rooftop garden where tenants grow fresh vegetables, in addition to computer rooms, a fitness center, meeting rooms and community spaces for programs to serve veterans and the community at large. It is scheduled to be completed in March 2012.

This project will showcase innovative and sustainable community redevelopment strategies and cutting-edge design while providing affordable housing for 150 residents. Make It Right and its local partners will convert the vacant, historic Bancroft Elementary School into a LEED Platinum housing and community complex. Redevelopment of the Bancroft site will include 50 affordable rental units for working families, seniors and people with special needs. Half the housing units will be built in the historic school building; the other half will be new townhome structures built around the school and designed by Kansas City-based BNIM Architects. Make It Right is slated to break ground in 2012.

| IRS990/Description | 0 | Make It Right was founded to build innovative and sustainable housing for families whose homes were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. In pursuit of that mission, we are developing new designs, methods and materials that will improve the performance and environmental effectiveness of affordable housing. We do this by gathering the world's leading experts in design and materials, and we apply their expertise in real-life projects so that we can share lessons learned and experience gained. We also disseminate our knowledge and experience with the goal of improving the environmental and energy performance of buildings. In 2011, we accomplished the following: 1) Continued to build safe, adaptive homes in the Lower 9th Ward that meet LEED Platinum requirements. Platinum is the highest possible rating given by the US Green Building Council. To date, Make It Right has built 73 houses and began construction on another 11 homes expected to be completed in 2012. 2) Continued to work with NeighborWorks America, the premier homeownership counseling agency in the US, to provide support, training and program development. We continued to offer individual homeownership counseling services and group workshops open to the community as part of our homeownership program. We provided $1.8 million in first mortgage and gap financing to residents participating in the Make It Right program. 3) Completed a workforce program that employed 13 individuals who provided construction services including landscaping, HVAC installation and house painting. Our cutting-edge work in sustainable design and construction has helped prepare a well-trained local workforce and helped position New Orleans and Louisiana at the center of the green economy. 4) Implemented NeighborWorks America's "Success Measures" tool, which will provide Make It Right with a system for measuring customer satisfaction, neighborhood stability, and community outcomes. Customization has been finalized. Make It Right will begin to receive community input in 2012. 5) Received $100,000 grant from NeighborWorks America for our Community Beyond Housing (long-term viability) program. 6) Shared lessons learned at various industry conferences including: The Department of Energy 2011 National Weatherization Training Conference, Greenbuild, PopTech, the Congressional Black Caucus 40th Annual Legislative Conference, The Economist Ideas Economy Conference, American Institute of Architects and others. |

| IRS990/MissionDescription | 0 | THE MAKE IT RIGHT FOUNDATION WAS INCORPORATED ON AUGUST 15, 2007, AS A DELAWARE NOT-FOR-PROFIT CORPORATION, TWO YEARS AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA. IT WAS FOUNDED TO HELP IMPLEMENT ACTOR BRAD PITT'S OBJECTIVE TO IMPROVE THE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING. ITS PRIMARY GOAL IS TO PROVIDE HIGH-QUALITY, ENERGY-EFFICIENT HOUSING TO FAMILIES IN NEED, AND TO IMPROVE THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITIES IN WHICH THEY LIVE. THE ORGANIZATION'S FIRST PROJECT WAS TO ASSIST IN THE SUSTAINABLE REDEVELOPMENT OF NEW ORLEANS, IN PARTICULAR, THE LOWER 9TH WARD. THE MISSION FOR THIS PROJECT IS TO BE A CATALYST FOR REDEVELOPMENT BY BUILDING A NEIGHBORHOOD COMPRISED OF SAFE AND HEALTHY HOMES, INSPIRED BY CRADLE TO CRADLE THINKING, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON HIGH-QUALITY DESIGN, WHILE PRESERVING THE SPIRIT OF THE COMMUNITY'S CULTURE.
