“The form 990 is presented to the finance committee and the board of directors for review.”
“Annually, each director completes a disclosure statement reflecting his or her interests, if any. If a conflict should arise, the director shall disclose the existence and circumstances of the actual or potential conflict, recuse himself or herself from voting on the subject, and leave the room while the matter is being discussed. The minutes of the board meeting shall reflect the resolution of the matter.”
“When determining compensation for lpi's employees, the board considers the comparable data produced by the bayer center and united way of allegheny county; reviews information obtained on guidesar; matches the information gathered against the qualifications needed for the position; and balances the needs of the organization, competition for talent, and organization budget considerations.”

THE PROGRAM USES A DATA-DRIVEN MODEL OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CREATED BY DR. ROBERT KELLEY OF CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY THAT OUTLINES STRATEGIC APPROACHES TO CEMENT THE PARTICIPANTS' STATUS AS STAR PERFORMERS IN THEIR PROFESSIONAL AND COMMUNITY WORK. THESE LEADERSHIP SKILLS ARE DEVELOPED IN THE CONTEXT OF COMMUNITY AWARENESS AND EXPOSURE TO THE BENEFITS AS WELL AS NEEDS OF OUR REGION. PARTICIPANTS IN THIS TEN-MONTH PROGRAM INCLUDE YOUNG LEADERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS AND A VARIETY OF DISCIPLINES. MANY HIGH-PERFORMING FIRMS IN THE PITTSBURGH AREA UTILIZE LDI AS A PART OF THEIR TALENT MANAGEMENT STRATEGY. APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND ARE DUE ON THE FIRST FRIDAY OF JUNE EACH YEAR, WITH A FRESH COHORT OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS FROM THE CORPORATE, NON-PROFIT, AND PUBLIC SECTORS STARTING THE PROGRAM EVERY SEPTEMBER AND MEETING ONE/TWO TIMES A MONTH. PROGRAM PARTICIPATION REQUIRES AN INVESTMENT ON THE PART OF THE APPLICANT AND/OR EMPLOYER IN THE FORM OF TUITION; SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE FOR THOSE IN NEED.SURVEY MONKEY RESULTS FOR THE LDI XXII CLASS COMPRISING OF ABOUT 47 YOUNG LEADERS REFLECT WELL ON THE PROGRAM'S ABILITY TO DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS, HONE PROFESSIONAL/SOCIAL NETWORKS, AND CREATE OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPACT THE COMMUNITY FOR LDI PARTICIPANTS. THE FOLLOWING QUANTITATIVE INDICATORS STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT WE HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN STRENGTHENING THE LEADERSHIP OF THE LDI XXII CLASS THROUGH PROGRAMS, PARTNERSHIPS, AND CONNECTIONS: 98% OF PARTICIPANTS FOUND THE EXPERIENCE TO BE VALUABLE 95% SAID THAT THEIR THINKING ABOUT THE PRACTICE OF LEADERSHIP HAS CHANGED BECAUSE OF THEIR PARTICIPATION IN LDI 92% STRONGLY AGREED THAT THE PROGRAM OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY TO HONE LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND CAPACITIES 95% SAID THAT IT DIVERSIFIED THEIR NETWORKS 87% OF THE CLASS FELT MORE STRONGLY MOTIVATED TO BE ENGAGED IN THE COMMUNITY AS A RESULT OF PARTICIPATING IN LDI 83% OF THE RESPONSES STRONGLY AGREED OR AGREED THAT THE POPUP! PITTSBURGH PROJECT PROVIDED THEM OPPORTUNITIES TO PRACTICE THE STAR PERFORMER SKILLS THEY LEARNED THROUGHOUT THE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE PROGRAM YEAR. " "LDI ALLOWED ME TO GET OUTSIDE OF MY COMFORT ZONE AND BE INVOLVED IN A PROJECT THAT CHALLENGED ME IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS. SECOND, THE NETWORK OF INDIVIDUALS I HAVE COME TO KNOW THROUGH LDI IS SUCH A VALUABLE RESOURCE AND GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE."" "THE CONFIDENCE I HAVE GOTTEN OUT OF LDI HAS BEEN INVALUABLE. THIS EXPERIENCE WAS SO FAR OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE BUT GOING THROUGH EACH ACTIVITY HAS HELPED ME REALIZE I'M CAPABLE OF EXCELING IN THESE ENVIRONMENTS AND NOT JUST GETTING THROUGH THEM. I ALSO WAS ABLE TO IMPLEMENT AN ACTIVITY FROM MOST SESSIONS WITH MY OWN TEAM AND PASS THE SKILLS DOWN THAT I HAD BEEN SHOWN."" "I'VE LEARNED A LOT THROUGH THE PROGRAM, AND IT HAS CHALLENGED ME TO CONTINUE TO WORK TOWARD BEING THE BEST LEADER I CAN BE, BOTH AT WORK AND PERSONALLY. THE TEACHINGS HAVE BEEN VALUABLE, THE INTERACTIONS WITH THE COHORT HAVE BEEN FANTASTIC, AND THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE HAS REALLY BEEN A GREAT ONE!"" "PRIOR TO LDI, I THINK THAT I WAS PROBABLY IN THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WHO THINK OF "SOMEONE IN CHARGE" WHEN DISCUSSING LEADERSHIP. THE STAR MODEL AND THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD THOUGH OVER THE LAST 9 MONTHS HAS SHIFTED THAT THOUGHT PROCESS. I NOW HAVE A MORE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF LEADERSHIP IN MANY FORMS. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE THE PERSON IN CHARGE TO EXHIBIT LEADERSHIP; YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO HAVE THE INITIATIVE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE."" "MY LDI EXPERIENCE HAS HONESTLY MOTIVATED ME TO BECOME MORE OF A LEADER IN MY COMMUNITY. I HAVE ALWAYS WORKED TO SUPPORT OTHERS AND FILL NEEDS AND HELP WHERE POSSIBLE BECAUSE I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SO BUSY IN MY PERSONAL LIFE THAT I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO DEDICATE MYSELF TO TAKING ON MORE LEADERSHIP ROLES. IT EXPOSES THEM TO NEW LEADERSHIP NETWORKS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE TO SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA COMMUNITY, AND FAST-TRACKING THEIR SUCCESS IN THE REGION AS HIGH-POTENTIAL LEADERS. THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN THE SIX MONTH LONG COURSE, CLCV PARTICIPANTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH REGIONAL BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS, ESTABLISH A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF REGIONAL BUSINESS AND NONPROFIT ISSUES AND TRENDS, AND UTILIZE THEIR LEADERSHIP SKILLS TO ACCOMPLISH A COMMUNITY IMPACT PROJECT FOR A LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION. THE ASSOCIATIONS AND EDUCATION OBTAINED THROUGH CLCV PROVIDE CLCV PARTICIPANTS THE PLATFORM NEEDED TO TAKE ON LEADERSHIP ROLES WITHIN THE SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA BUSINESS AND NONPROFIT COMMUNITIES. ALSO, EACH CLCV PARTICIPANT HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO NETWORK WITH A SELECT GROUP OF COMMUNITY CONNECTORS. COMMUNITY CONNECTORS ARE SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS AND CIVIC LEADERS THAT WILL ENGAGE WITH CLCV PARTICIPANTS IN INFORMAL SETTINGS AT SEVERAL POINTS DURING THE SIX-MONTH COURSE. SUCH CONNECTIONS BROADEN THE NETWORK OF THE VETERAN LEADERS ENROLLED IN THE COURSE. PROGRAM IMPACT METRICS ARE HEARTENING:O 100% OF RESPONDENTS FOUND THE CLCV EXPERIENCE TO BE VALUABLE.O 100% FOUND THAT PARTICIPATION IN CLCV EXPANDED THEIR NETWORK. O CLCV MOTIVATED OVER 94% OF THE PARTICIPANTS TO BECOME MORE ENGAGED IN THE COMMUNITY.O 70% STRONGLY AGREED THAT THEY DEVELOPED A GREATER SENSE OF COMMUNITY (WITHIN AND OUTSIDE OF THE COHORT) THROUGH CLCV. THIS IS SIGNIFICANT AS PRE-CLCV, ONLY 43% OF THE VETERAN PARTICIPANTS WERE CURRENTLY INVOLVED IN VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE THE VETERAN COMMUNITY, AND ONLY 25% WERE INVOLVED IN VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE VETERAN COMMUNITY." OVER 90% WERE PLACED ON AREA NONPROFIT BOARDSO OVER 82% FOUND THAT THEIR PARTICIPATION IN CLCV OFFERED THEM A TRUE OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY THEIR SKILLS IN PROBLEM SOLVING TO ADDRESS A NEED IN OUR REGION. FURTHERMORE, THE SMALL GROUP PROJECTS (WHERE A GROUP OF ABOUT FIVE CLCV PARTICIPANTS WORKS WITH A NONPROFIT AGENCY TO DEVELOP AND EXECUTE AN IDEA THAT WOULD HELP THE HOST AGENCY FURTHER ITS MISSION) HAVE BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL. AGENCIES THAT WORKED WITH CLCV PARTICIPANTS INCLUDE WESA, THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS, WQED, YMCA AND MORE. THESE PROJECTS INCLUDED: AN ANALYSIS OF AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BETTER INTEGRATION OF HR POLICIES AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS; FIELD RESEARCH FOR CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR A NEW YOUTH PROGRAM CONNECTING VOLUNTEER LEADERS WITH YOUTH; AND, GIVING VOICE AND ATTENTION TO IGNORED OR UNDEREXPOSED VETERANS ISSUES. ONE PROJECT IN PARTICULAR CENTERED ON CREATING A REPOSITORY OF AUDIO RECORDED "VETERANS STORIES" IN CONJUNCTION WITH "COMMUNITY PROJECT HOST AGENCY" WESA. THE CLCV PARTICIPANTS UTILIZED THEIR OWN NETWORKS TO RECRUIT AND RECORD A DIVERSE RANGE OF PERSPECTIVES AND STORIES FOR THIS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT, WITH WESA PROVIDING NOT ONLY THE TECHNICAL EXPERTISE IN EDITING AND PRODUCTION, BUT ALSO THE MEDIA OUTLET FOR DISSEMINATING AND SHARING THESE UNIQUE STORIES. IN PARTICULAR, THIS SMALL GROUP PROJECT HIGHLIGHTED THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF VETERAN ENGAGEMENT BY DEMONSTRATING THE INTERCONNECTEDNESS OF OUR COMMUNITY AND SHOWCASING THE WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN ALL BECOME INVOLVED WHEN MUTUAL INTERESTS ARE DISCERNED AND PROMOTED. UTILIZING THIS SMALL GROUP PROJECT APPROACH, CLCV NOT ONLY INCREASED AWARENESS AND SUPPORT FOR VETERANS, BUT ALSO EMPLOYED THE VETERANS' PROBLEM SOLVING AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS TO ENGAGE THE BROADER COMMUNITY IN A WAY THAT IMPACTED THEIR (THE BROADER COMMUNITY'S) OPINIONS OF VETERANS IN A POSITIVE WAY. |
