Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The programs of leadership pittsburgh inc. (lpinc.) provide a continuum of civic engagement opportunities. The programs connect individuals from diverse backgrounds, professional levels, and organizations to learn about and serve the region.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Leadership development initiative (ldi)a program distinct in approach from the flagship lp program, ldi is geared toward top emerging talent within organizations. The program uses a data-driven model of leadership development created by dr. Robert kelley of carnegie mellon university that outlines strategic approaches to cement the participants' status as star performers in their professional and community work. These leadership skills are developed in the context of community awareness and exposure to the benefits as well as needs of our region. Participants in this nine-month program include young leaders from diverse backgrounds and a variety of disciplines. Many high-performing firms in the pittsburgh area utilize ldi as a part of their talent management strategy. Applications are accepted throughout the year and are due on the first friday of june each year, with a fresh cohort of young professionals from the corporate, non-profit, and public sectors starting the program every october and meeting one/two times a month. Program participation requires an investment on the part of the applicant and/or employer in the form of tuition; scholarship assistance is available for those in need.survey monkey results for the ldi xx class comprising of almost 50 young leaders reflect well on the program's ability to develop leadership skills, hone professional/social networks, and create opportunities to impact the community for ldi participants. The following quantitative indicators strongly suggest that we have been successful in strengthening the leadership of the ldi xx class through programs, partnerships, and connections: * 100% of ldi xx graduates reported that ldi was valuable to their development as emerging leaders. * an overwhelming percentage (92%-97%) experienced gains in their practice of various leadership skills as a result of the program; these included skills such as initiative, networking, self-management, teamwork, followership, perspective, persuasion and organizational savvy. * 100% of ldi xx believe that the program expanded and diversified their network. * 94% of ldi xx feel that the popup! Pittsburgh project provided them with opportunities to practice the star performer skills they learned throughout the year. * 92% of ldi xx graduates say their thinking about leadership changed because of their ldi experience.additionally, the following qualitative statements strongly support the quantitative indicators of program success: * "what a fantastic program, and much kudos to all of the leadership pittsburgh staff and board members for their hard work and dedication!" * "i enjoyed my experience. There were times when being in the program was taxing, and i was having trouble juggling work, personal life, and ldi. But by staying dedicated to the program, i have learned that people my age in leadership positions are having the same difficulties. It was nice to be in a room with other people to discuss these issues and concerns in a non-judgmental environment." * "i was very pleased with the program. The involvement in the program actually re-sparked my interest in advancing my education and shed a new light on the importance of community involvement and networking." * "i'm very glad to have had this experience. I believe it's a program that works if you work it, and i think that upon reflection, i will see even more connections that have been created as a result of my participation in the class."we broadened our outreach across the community to attract highly qualified individuals to our program offerings. Through the efforts of our board of directors and staff, the quantity and quality of applications for both our lp and ldi programs increased in significant ways. Lpinc. Continues to refine, enhance and improve the quality of our programs, envisioning our organization as becoming a premier leadership organization within the community leadership movement. Toward that end, we continued to reach out to leaders in academ

IRS990/Description0LEADERSHIP PITTSBURGH (LP)THE FLAGSHIP, HIGHLY-SELECTIVE PROGRAM GEARED TOWARDS ESTABLISHED LEADERS IS DESIGNED LIKE A HANDS-ON MBA IN COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP. THE TWELVE-DAY CURRICULUM DISTRIBUTED OVER A TEN-MONTH PERIOD EXAMINES CRITICAL COMMUNITY ISSUES (SUCH AS EDUCATION, REGIONAL ECONOMY, INCLUSION, HUMAN SERVICES, LOCAL GOVERNMENT, AND THE ARTS), ENHANCES CIVIC-ENGAGEMENT, DEVELOPS EXECUTIVE-LEVEL NETWORKS, AND EMPOWERS SENIOR MANAGERS TO IMPACT THEIR BUSINESS AND THE REGIONAL AGENDA AT A LEADERSHIP LEVEL. APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND ARE DUE ON THE FIRST FRIDAY OF MAY EACH YEAR, WITH A FRESH COHORT OF ESTABLISHED, SUCCESSFUL PROFESSIONALS FROM THE CORPORATE, NON-PROFIT, AND PUBLIC SECTORS STARTING THE PROGRAM EVERY SEPTEMBER. PROGRAM PARTICIPATION REQUIRES AN INVESTMENT ON THE PART OF THE APPLICANT AND/OR EMPLOYER IN THE FORM OF TUITION; SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE FOR THOSE IN NEED.INCOMING PARTICIPANTS HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS ABOUT THE VALUE THEY WOULD DERIVE FROM PARTICIPATION. THIS PAST YEAR THE LEADERSHIP PITTSBURGH PROGRAM MET OR EXCEEDED THE EXPECTATIONS OF ALMOST 60 PARTICIPANTS ON THE FOLLOWING METRICS: * OVER 95% OF THE PARTICIPANTS FOUND THEIR LP EXPERIENCE TO BE VERY VALUABLE, WITH 83% REPORTING THAT THEY HAVE EXPANDED AND DIVERSIFIED THEIR RESPECTIVE NETWORKS; AND OVER 80% REPORTING THEY WERE MOTIVATED TO DO EVEN MORE AT THE LEADERSHIP LEVEL AS A RESULT OF THIS EXPERIENCE. * ALMOST 70-75% OF PARTICIPANTS EXPANDED THEIR LEVEL OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND EXPANDED COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVES WITHIN THEIR ORGANIZATIONS. * ADDITIONALLY, 100% OF THE PARTICIPANTS REPORTED A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THEIR AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE IN EACH OF THE CRITICAL ISSUE-FOCUSED TOPICS THAT WERE PRESENTED. SOME OF THE MOST REMARKABLE GAINS IN KNOWLEDGE OCCURRED IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS IMPACTING OUR REGION: LOCAL GOVERNMENT, THE REGIONAL ECONOMY, PITTSBURGH NEIGHBORHOODS AND THE ARTS.BEYOND THE QUANTITATIVE FEEDBACK FROM LPXXIX PARTICIPANTS, BELOW ARE TESTIMONIALS ABOUT THE VALUE THE PROGRAM AFFORDS: * "LP WAS A REALLY GREAT EXPERIENCE AND I'M TREMENDOUSLY GLAD TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF IT. THIS MAY BE A WEIRD THING TO SAY, BUT I DON'T THINK I FULLY REALIZED MY POWER AS A LEADER BEFORE LP. SURE, I TALK AND PEOPLE LISTEN, BUT I CERTAINLY DIDN'T APPRECIATE HOW MUCH AND THOUGHTFULLY THEY LISTEN UNTIL LP. IN TERMS OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, LP HAS ONLY SERVED TO SOLIDIFY MY PREVIOUS VIEWS THAT CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IS IMPERATIVE TO A STRONG SOCIETY." * "TRULY REMARKABLE EXPERIENCE WHICH I WILL LONG CHERISH!" * "LP HAS CHANGED HOW I VIEW COMMUNITY/CIVIC/GOVERNMENTAL ISSUES WITHIN THE REGION. I BELIEVE I NOW HAVE A MUCH MORE INFORMED VIEWPOINT RELATIVE TO THE PROCESS AND UNDERLYING ISSUES. IT HAS ALSO HELPED ME TO NARROW DOWN MY FOCUS REGARDING FUTURE ADVOCACY OPPORTUNITIES AND WHERE I WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS MY EFFORTS." * "THIS WAS A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE FOR ME. I BENEFITTED FROM THE LEARNING EXPERIENCES BOTH PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO BE A PART OF IT." * "I'VE GAINED CONFIDENCE IN ENGAGING A WIDE VARIETY OF PUBLIC POLICY ISSUES. I'M MUCH MORE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE CITY THAN BEFORE." * "LP HAS MADE ME BROADEN MY UNDERSTANDING OF MY REGION AND CHALLENGES WE FACE. AT TIMES IT WAS FRUSTRATING BECAUSE WE DIDN'T "FIND SOLUTIONS". BUT AS IT WAS SAID-THE SESSIONS WERE DESIGNED TO MAKE ME THINK AND THAT THEY DID! THANK YOU FOR A GREAT EXPERIENCE."
