Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 4:

The mcg jazz archive collection preserves more than 25 years of jazz for future generations. The martin luther king, jr photo collection artistically preserves a historic time period. The overall art collection is vital to the mission of the organization because it provides unique opportunities for urban youth and adults to see, discuss, evaluate and appreciate art. Art provides an opportunity for historical and cultural discussion to address modern day issues impacting diversity. It can build awareness and bridges between different cultures. Studying and viewing art allows students to learn how to produce art and preserve history and culture through art.

PART V, LINE 4:

Explanation: the endowment funds are to be used to support the operations of mcg youth & arts and mcg jazz.

PART X, LINE 2:

Explanation: accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america require the organizations management to evaluate tax positions taken by the organization and recognize a tax liability (or asset) if the organization has taken a position that is uncertain. An uncertain position is defined as one in which there is a 50% or greater likelihood that the position will not be sustained upon examination by a taxing authority. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the organization and has concluded that, as of june 30, 2015, there are no uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken. The organization has recognized no interest or penalties related to uncertain tax positions. The organization is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. Management believes the organization is no longer subject to income tax examinations for years prior to 2011.

All programs are led by teaching artists who are also practicing professionals and youth mentors. MCG Youth & Arts' programming provides opportunities for youth from all backgrounds to engage meaningfully with the arts, and utilizes the arts as a platform to help youth discover their inherent worth and encourages them to learn the value of perseverance, including completing their education. Following are highlights of MCG Youth & Arts' achievements in FY 2014-15: Afterschool Programming - During the 2014-15 school year, 320 unique youth from Pittsburgh Public Schools occupied a total of 807 enrollment spaces in MCG Youth & Arts' flagship Apprenticeship Training Program (ATP). The program continued to produce meaningful results with 93 percent of seniors who participated in ATP graduating high school on-time, a number that stands in stark contrast to the Pittsburgh Public Schools' graduation rate of 77 percent (source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). An average of 63 percent of youth enrolled in MCG's afterschool programs qualify for free or reduced lunch, and 51 percent were active in the Allegheny Department of Human Services (DHS) system and are therefore considered at-risk in 2014-15. Additionally, in 2014-15, MCG Youth & Arts facilitated the design and construction of the TechSuite additive production/manufacturing laboratory and the development and implementation of accompanying curriculum as a new component of ATP. TechSuite introduces youth to vital new technologies and related creative applications while addressing the digital divide-the name given to the gap between individuals with regular, ready access to technology and those without. School-Day Programming - MCG Youth & Arts' school-day programming continued to serve youth including those who have been placed in DHS residential homes. School-day programs served 162 unique youth last year-a 50 percent increase over 2013-14. School-day programs continued to generate income for MCG Youth & Arts while increasing service to youth who are at-risk. Summer Programming - MCG Youth & Arts' 2015 summer program offered 46 middle- and high-school-aged youth hands-on arts instruction across three, two-week sessions. Tuition for 39 youth was covered by the DHS. Speaker Series - In 2014-15, MCG Youth & Arts continued its Speaker Series with a presentation from Doctors David Lee and Steven Cole from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine about channeling creative talents into the field of dentistry. Lee and Cole described how they use their sculpting abilities to pursue rewarding careers creating dental prosthetics, and encouraged youth to consider various areas in dentistry where their creative abilities could be employed. Visiting Artists and Professional Exhibitions - Through MCG Youth & Arts' Visiting Artists program, youth are introduced to nationally and internationally renowned visiting artists who exhibit their work onsite, conduct workshops, and provide lectures. The Visiting Artists program also connects diverse, accomplished artists to young people and their communities. In October 2014, Brian Cohen, one of three photographers featured in the Being Good exhibition at MCG, engaged youth in a hands-on photography workshop. Being Good was on display from October 2014 to January 2015 at MCG. From January through March, MCG hosted an exhibition of works by the late Daniel Rhodes, who in 1989 was the first visiting artist to conduct a residency at MCG. The works on display in the Visiting Artists exhibition in 2015 represented Rhodes' expansive knowledge, experience, and creativity. The exhibition was accompanied by a glazing workshop led by professional artist John Britt. Student Exhibitions - In FY 2014-15, MCG hosted five student exhibitions. Family Nights held in November 2014, and March and May 2015 celebrated the work of youth partici
