Mcg youth & arts - the apprenticeship training program (atp), mcg youth & arts after-school program, has long served primarily pittsburgh public school students, serving 424 pps students in fy 2011-12. In fy 2011-12, mcg continued to offer atp to a greater variety of student populations throughout allegheny county, including students from urban pathways charter school (upcs). In total, mcg youth & arts enrolled 81 non-pps students. Thirty-seven of the 81 students originate from charter schools, private schools and outlying school districts. The remaining 44 students originated from dhs-associated nontraditional schools and youth homes.school-day programming continued to serve primarily two populations, including middle-school students from manchester academic charter schools (macs) and high-school students who have been placed in allegheny county's department of human services' (dhs) residential homes. The expanded school-day programs offered to dhs and macs served 60 children per week. Up to 20 students from macs attended studio seminars on fridays as part of their school day. Children who are placed in holy family institute through dhs attended mcg youth & arts twice weekly for school-day arts experiences that closely parallel mcg's apprenticeship training program. These programs have generated considerable income for the organization while continuing to serve disadvantaged youth, consistent with the organization's mission. On december 6, 2011, mcg youth & arts inaugurated a new speakers' series, featuring individuals whose inspiring stories of overcoming adversity and achieving success help students to understand divergent paths to success, especially in the face of adversity.throughout fy 2011-12, mcg youth & arts hosted the following visiting artists who worked with students; offered seminars, demonstrations and workshops; and exhibited onsite: october 2011 - a group of ceramic artists from china; photographer jason pohuski ; january through march 2012 - ceramics artist yoko sekino-bov; may 2012 - ceramics artists robert "boomer" moore and jennifer allen.the inaugural, juried mcg invitational arts exhibition and awards ceremony in april and may 2012 was populated with work made by high school students from pittsburgh public schools, career connections charter high school, city charter high school, east allegheny high school, propel braddock hills high school, steel valley high school, urban pathways charter school, and west mifflin high school. Nearly 500 works were submitted for exhibition, of which nearly 300 were chosen to compete for nearly $100,000 in scholarships and cash awards.
