Activity 2

Afterschool Apprenticeship Program (ATP): After school programming is delivered through the Apprenticeship Training Program (ATP). ATP provides high school aged students of any background the opportunity to refine their art skills in a safe and productive after school environment. Instruction is developed and delivered through four distinct art-making studios: Ceramics, Digital Arts, Design Arts and Photography. Each of these specialized studios is equipped with professional level tools, resources, and technologies. ATP operates on three enrollment cycles during the academic year. Each trimester includes 16 distinct courses that meet one-day per week from 3:00 - 5:30 pm for approximately 10 weeks. Students are able to set personal goals and achieve recognition. In June 2009, MCG Youth was honored as winner of the Arts and Technology Award from the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council for its innovative approach to learning in the arts with new technologies. During the 2008-09 academic year, teens in the Apprenticeship Training Program executed three public art works to be displayed in North Side Communities.

Activity 3

Visiting Artist Program:The Visiting Artist Program enables nationally and internationally recognized contemporary artists who exhibit at MCG to engage K-12, higher education students and others. They conduct workshops, lectures, hands-on demonstrations, residencies and school visits, ranging from one day to a week or longer. MCG Arts presented lectures and workshops with 9 visiting artists and mounted exhibitions at its gallery spaces located at 1815 Metropolitan Street. MCG also exhibited work at a gallery space at 800 Penn Avenue, in the heart of the Cultural District. The Mentors and Makers exhibition series, formerly installed at this gallery space, was presented in two exhibitions: One created with the media arts team known as Serve and Project (Io Palmer and Lisa Link) was installed at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh. A second exhibition created with visiting artists Beth Nixon and Leat Klingman was installed at MCG. Various activities this year included: Visiting artist Beth Nixon worked with Design Arts students on development of puppetry and performance art. Visiting Artist Leat Klingman worked with students on the development of hand puppet narratives incorporating costuming created in the Design Arts studio. In addition, MCG collaborated with the Society for Contemporary Craft on the production of visiting artist workshops with Robert Briscoe and Kurt Weiser and on an exhibition and residency with Charm Bracelet project partners including SLB Radio and the Pittsburgh Children's Museum.
