Activity 2

Mcg youth & arts' afterschool apprenticeship training program (atp) provides high school students of any background with the opportunity to learn arts skils and build positive character traits in a safe and inspiring environment, which includes the following four well-equipped studios: ceramics, photography, design and digital arts. Each of three trimesters includes 16 distinct courses taught by teaching artists who act as classroom mentors and help students to set and achieve goals for the trimester. In 2010-11, mcg youth & arts expanded day-time and afterschool studio arts-based programming beyond the pittsburgh public school district to include students from manchester academic charter school and urban pathways chart school as well as youth in out-of-home placements with the allegheny county department of human services.

Activity 3

Mcg youth & arts' visiting artist program brings national and internationally recognized contemporary artists to mcg to exhibit their work and engage with k to 12th graders, students enrolled in higher education, and other individuals from the community. Visiting artists conduct workshops, lectures, hands-on demonstrations and residencies that can range from one day to several weeks in length. In 2010-11, mcg youth & arts hosted a number of visiting artists, including phil borges, whose work documenting indigenous and tribal cultures around the world creates heightened understanding of the issues faced by people in the developing world; and latoya ruby frazier, whose photographs of braddock, pennsylvania families and cultural life start insightful discussions about the place and power of racism and of media images in the creation of public perceptions of community.
