Mcg youth & arts - mcg youth & arts programming includes school-day arts-integrated curricula, afterschool studio-arts classes and summer programs. All programs are led by teaching artists who actively practice art and mentor students. Mcg youth & arts offers students a much-needed option: a proven, inspirational afterschool program that positively impacts high-school graduation rates, fosters character development and career aspiration, and reaches far beyond classroom education to shape students lives well into the future.students are also introduced to the work of nationally and internationally renowned visiting artists who exhibit their work onsite, conduct student workshops and present artist talks. Visiting artists share their personal and professional perspectives and experiences with young people to increase the depth and breadth of student engagement with artistic processes and concepts and foster new life skills. Mcg youth & arts programming also includes student exhibitions, award ceremonies, activities for students and their families, and public events and activities.through mcg youth & arts, students learn, create and celebrate, developing greater self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment through creative self-expression. Mcg youth & arts provides educational opportunities and a safe environment in which each students mind and hands are engaged and their contributions are validated by peers and mentors, including teaching artists on staff as well as visiting artists.following are highlights of mcg youth & arts achievements in fy 2012-13:school-day programming: while continuing to serve middle-school students from manchester academic charter schools and high-school students who have been placed in allegheny countys department of human services residential homes, mcg youth & arts engaged a new group of students from pittsburgh manchester school.afterschool programming: mcg youth & arts served 366 pittsburgh public school (pps) students out of a total 383 students through its apprenticeship training program (atp). Mcg continued to offer atp to a greater variety of student populations throughout allegheny county, including students from urban pathways charter school (upcs). In total, mcg youth & arts enrolled 17 non-pps students. Atp enrollment included 221 students who enrolled in atp classes for the first time and 162 returning students. Also in 2012-13, 190 youth enrolled in two or more atp classes. Atp students attended a total of 797 classes at mcg throughout the 2012-13 school year.summer programming: through its 2012 summer studio intensives, mcg youth & arts offered hands-on arts instruction to 20 middle-school-aged and 35 high-school-aged youth across three two-week sessions.visiting artists and professional exhibitions: through the mcg youth & arts visiting artists program, students were presented with engaging examples of successful careers in the arts. In november 2012, pittsburgh-based cartoonist and illustrator wayno conducted a three-part workshop with mcg youth & arts students. From january 22 through march 15, 2013, ceramic artist barbara sorensens topographies exhibition was on display in mcgs connie kerr gallery. March 25 through april 12, 2013, gambian artist saihou njie displayed a photographic series titled twinning: blood is thicker than mud in which faces of african people were displayed alongside the faces of well-known african americans. The similarities in facial physiognomy highlighted in these images underscore the genetic commonality between african-american and african populations.student exhibitions and events: at the conclusion of each trimester, student work is exhibited and celebrated during family nights. Mcg youth & arts hosted family nights on november 29, 2012 and march 7, 2013. The third family night, held on june 6, 2013, also served as the opening reception for the 31st annual accomplishment exhibition, which highlights work created by mcg youth & arts students throughout
