Activity 2

Social responsibilityour ymca works in collaboration with governmental and community agencies to provide a variety of programs that help accomplish our mission to help people grow in spirit, mind and body. In these programs we provide the resources our community needs to address the most pressing social issues: child welfare, education, employment, and substance abuse. We work to make sure every child, family and community has what they need to achieve their best potential. The ymca also utililized the help of of over 421 volunteers to add value to our programs and aid in our strong kids campaign.the ymca's emphasis on social responsibility encourages individuals to bring about meaningful change to strengthen the family unit, develop the social skills and values of youth, and develop a sense of world mindedness, including an appreciation of other racial/ethnic groups and cultures in youth and adults. Examples of these programs include:adventure guides, which fosters understanding and companionship between parent and child.youth and government and model un, which teaches teens to make the right choices, challenges teens to pursue a positive future, and to take an active role in strengthening their community.senior programs, which provide activities geared toward socialization, physical activity and friendship for active older adults. The majority of these programs are provided at no cost to the participants.the ymca provides a study group for legal permanent residents to obtain us citizenship. Participants gain confidence as they study for their citizenship test, learn how to fill out their application and learn how to submit the application. As a us citizen, they become able to vote in elections, serve as jurors, travel with us passports, become eligible for jobs, become elected officials and obtain government benefits. Since we started our pilot program in july 2011, 10 people have passed the test. As a complement to this study group we offer english as a second language classes at a foundation level two days a week.

Activity 3

Healthy living our programs enhance the health and well being of our members and program participants by providing opportunities for every family to build stronger bonds, achieve greater work/life balance, and become more engaged with their communities. Beyond fitness facilities, we provide educational programs to promote healthier decisions, and offer a variety of programs that support physical, intellectual and spirtual strength.the women's living well program, which is currently serving over 155 women, was designed to help create realistic goals for self improvement and to emphasize disease prevention through regular exercise, proper nutrition, stress management, and health education.the ymca aquatics program provides learn-to-swim programs, water based fitness and water based therapy programs. There are also certification programs, which aid in developing water safety and accident prevention skills of young people. The ymca served 4,813 members in aquatic areas.the livestrong at the ymca program was implemented at the hunterdon county ymca in 2011. This program is open to cancer survivors at any point after their diagnosis and upon release by their doctor. The classes meet three times a week for cardio and strength training. Participants have an opportunity to interact with other cancer survivors in a positive environment focused on improving their health. Staff have been trained in the livestrong at the ymca curriculum to provide specialized assistance and guidance. Survivors and their caregivers/families also receive a free membership to the ymca for the 12 weeks that they are particating in the program.ymca diabetes prevention program focuses on those who are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The program helps participants to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease. Based on research funded by the national institutes of health and centers for disease control and prevention, the program reduces the risk of developing type two diabetes by 58%.these healthy living programs were made available at fees affordable to the vast majority of people living in the hunterdon county service area, with financial assistance provided routinely for those in need. Direct financial assistance to more than 1,143 people in these programs in 2012, was valued at $149,574 for membership and $15,790 for programs.
