“The madrona institute's coast salish youth stewardship corps (csysc) serves indigenous youth ages 14+ who have ancestral ties with the san juan islands. This youth stewardship program reconnects coast salish natural heritage learning traditions with their place of origin, while building relationships with local youth and communities by working closely with the san juan islands youth conservation corps. In may, csysc and tribal elders worked in partnership with pacific rim institute on whidbey island and spent 3 days working with prairie restoration lead researcher and dirctor on the institute in stwarding and havesting camas beds. In july, csysc partnered with the us forest sevice for a week long mentorship with various experts from the us forest service, the stillaguamish fish and wildlife officers and sillaguamish dnr. In august, csysc partnered with the san juan islands youth consevation corps-lopez for a week for cross cultural learning exchange also in august, csysc embarked on a minimalist canoe journey to orcas, patos and sucia islands where for the first time they traveled with all their gear on the canoe. In october, csysc youth attended the grand opening of the new burke museum in seattle. It was a meaningful trip for them because we have been learning about various tools and implements made from natural resources that they able to see true traditional artifacts that connected to those lessons. Additionally, the madrona institute funded a composting project by friday harbor students. The madrona institute also supported the creation of transition san juan island, a local grassroots resilience initiative, in its first organizational meeting held in november and attended by over 65 islanders. The madrona institute continues to promote the purchase of the san juan islands special license plate in its effort to advance conservation and stewardship in the islands and to serve as financial sponsorship of the san juan island youth conservation corps administered by the san juan islands conservation district.”
