In cooperation with the san juan islands conservation district, the 2018 summer youth conservation program included a total of 48 youth between the ages of 12-18 participating in the san juan islands youth conservation corps (sjiycc), cumulatively contributing more than 5,300 hours of land- stewardship activities and work projects throughout public lands in san juan county. Sjiycc projects were coordinated with and sponsored by 22 federal, state, local, and tribal agencies/partners. The project work was completed on 6 islands throughout san juan county (san juan, orcas, lopez, shaw, patos, and sucia). The madrona institute's coast salish youth stewardship corps (scysc) serves indigenous youth ages 14+ who have ancestral ties with the san juan islands. This youth stewardship program reconnects coast salish natural heritage learning traditions with their place of origin, while building relationships with local youth and communities by working closely with the san juan islands youth conservation corps. In 2018, the csysc annual mini-canoe journey took place in june. This journey involved two tribal ocean traveling canoes, and was attended by members of 11 different tribes. Senior youth crew members and staff from the sjiycc program traveled on the canoes and took part in important cultural and place-based activities. In august, the csysc members engaged in traditional stewardship activities on san juan island. A public workshop on climate action policy at the local, state and federal level was held on april 28,2018 at the san juan island grange in friday harbor, wa. The speaker was gwen hanson, md, director of the citizens climate lobby - bellevue, wa chapter. Also speaking were lovel pratt of friends of the san juans and sarah severn of the madrona institute islands climate resilience program. Over fifty-five people attended the workshop.
