Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The purpose of the partners program is to create relevant and responsive programs and partnerships that support nearly 200 low-income oakland unified school district students and their families each year in their quest to find and access high quality college preparatory educational opportunities and eventually to attend and graduate from college. We do this through three programs: a summer academic enrichment program for middle school students (entering its 28th year); an academic year mentoring and tutoring program to support the summer students during the academic year; and, a high school transition program to help 8th graders and their families better understand the process of high school admissions. The goal is to create a pipeline for these students and their families, guiding them through the transitions between school levels (middle to high school) and through academic and personal challenges, all the way to college matriculation.

To help low-income students access high quality college preparatory educational opportunities.

IRS990/Desc0Summer Academy (SA) Program:Partners completed its 30th Annual Summer Academy Program in 2016, graduating 25 rising 9th graders and serving 84 total students in the middle school grades. All entering students attend Oakland Unified School District middle schools. While attending our Summer Academy, students receive what is often not possible in public schools due to funding constraints: small class sizes (average size: only 10 students/class), a rich Arts component focused on Dance and the Visual Arts, a course in Language Arts that integrates Literary Analysis and Writing, Math skills development in small groups, daily mentoring from high-achieving high school students (with a ratio of 1 mentor to 3 middle school students), hands-on projects across the curriculum, extra-curricular activities such as Science and Yearbook, and local field trips to an urban farm, cultural institutions and a tour of the UC Berkeley campus.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Academic Year Mentoring (AYM) Program:The Academic Year Mentoring (AYM) program had another productive year, collaborating with our partner middle schools, KIPP Bridge and Westlake Middle School - and adding a Pilot Program with future partner, Claremont Middle School, in which the students were mentored afterschool on the College Prep campus. During the academic year, 24 students per semester were mentored at KIPP Bridge from grades 6-8. With 9 tutors, a Site Leader, and a Program Manager to support the students, we maintain an approximately 3 to 1 student-mentor ratio. Our sessions consist of tutoring and specialized homework support in all general core classes (Math, Reading, Science, and Writing) with a concentrated focus on math and science. This format allows for more focused, Common Core-based instruction for each grade level and offers needed support in particular disciplines in the case of foundational gaps in student skills. We continued our engagement of two-days-a-week at Westlake Middle School, with an average number of 20 students served weekly. The consistent pairing of the same mentor and mentee, weekly, provided high quality and individualized academic support. The second day allows us to work with each student on time management, organization, and study skills in addition to homework, test preparation, and reviewing academic concepts. Our tutors are able to check on the progress of assignments, tests, and comprehension of core concepts, as well as build stronger relationships with students through community building activities. In addition, our 3 to 1 student-mentor ratio (20 students weekly and 6-7 mentors) allows for strong relationships to form between mentors and the middle school students. This consistency and continuity of format have made Partners an effective model in Westlake Middle School's afterschool programming.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0High School Transition Program - HSTP:The High School Transition Program completed the 2016 high school admissions year with great success. The program provided 4 workshops throughout the school year. During these workshops, Partners staff assisted families with the application process for independent (private), parochial (private), public charter and traditional public high schools; successfully enrolling 25 eighth grade students in 13 total high schools in the Oakland Unified School District or in the Oakland vicinity. The workshop utilizes small groups and lectures with a 1 to 5 ratio of staff to families to ensure students were applying to schools that matched their interests and future plans. To ensure program reach and relevance, the workshops also provide at least 2 community members who speak languages other than English.
