IRS990/MissionDesc0THE PURPOSE OF THE PARTNERS PROGRAM IS TO CREATE PROGRAMS & PARTNERSHIPS THAT SUPPORT NEARLY 300 LOW-INCOME OAKLAND UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES EACH YEAR, IN THEIR QUEST TO FIND AND ACCESS HIGH QUALITY COLLEGE PREPARATORY EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES & EVENTUALLY TO ATTEND AND GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE. WE DO THIS THROUGH FOUR PROGRAMS: A SUMMER ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS (ENTERING ITS 27TH YEAR); AN ACADEMIC YEAR TUTORING PROGRAM TO SUPPORT THE SUMMER STUDENTS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR; A HIGH SCHOOL TRANSITION PROGRAM THAT FACILITATES INFORMATION AND EDUCATION FOR THE 8TH GRADERS & THEIR FAMILIES; & A COLLEGE COUNSELING COLLABORATIVE PROGRAM FOR ALUMNI OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMS. THE GOAL IS TO CREATE A PIPELINE FOR THESE STUDENTS & THEIR FAMILIES, GUIDING THEM THROUGH THE TRANSITIONS BETWEEN SCHOOL LEVELS (MIDDLE TO HIGH SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE) & THROUGH ACADEMIC & PERSONAL STRUGGLES, ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO COLLEGE GRADUATION.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0THE ACADEMIC YEAR MIDDLE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP HAD ANOTHER TREMENDOUS YEAR WORKING WITH OUR PARTNER MIDDLE SCHOOLS, KIPP BRIDGE AND WESTLAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL. DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR WE TUTOR AND SERVE CLOSE TO 50 STUDENTS PER SEMESTER AT KIPP BRIDGE FROM GRADES 5 - 8. EACH WEEK WE SEE APPROXIMATELY 20 - 25 STUDENTS THROUGHOUT BOTH SEMESTERS. WITH 7 - 8 TUTORS, A SITE LEADER (COLLEGE INTERN), AND A PROGRAM LEADER TO SUPPORT THE STUDENTS, WE MAINTAIN A 3 TO 1 STUDENT-TUTOR RATIO. OUR SESSIONS CONSIST OF TUTORING AND SPECIALIZED HOMEWORK SUPPORT IN ALL GENERAL CORE CLASSES (MATH, READING, SCIENCE, AND WRITING) WITH A CONCENTRATED FOCUS ON MATH AND SCIENCE. THIS FORMAT HAS ALLOWED US TO REACH MORE OF THEIR STUDENTS ACADEMICALLY FROM EACH GRADE LEVEL AND OFFER NEEDED SUPPORT IN PARTICULAR DISCIPLINES. WE EXPANDED OUR SERVICES FROM ONE-DAY-A-WEEK TO TWO-DAYS-A-WEEK AT WESTLAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL. THIS INCREASE OFFERS STUDENTS CONSISTENT, HIGH QUALITY, AND INDIVIDUALIZED ACADEMIC SUPPORT. THE SECOND DAY ALLOWS US TO WORK WITH EACH STUDENT ON TIME MANAGEMENT, ORGANIZATION, AND STUDY SKILLS IN ADDITION TO HOMEWORK, TEST PREPARATION, AND REVIEWING CLASS CONCEPTS. OUR TUTORS ARE ABLE TO CHECK ON THE PROGRESS OF ASSIGNMENTS, TESTS, AND COMPREHENSION OF CORE CONCEPTS, AS WELL AS BUILD STRONGER RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS THROUGH COMMUNITY BUILDING ACTIVITIES. IN ADDITION, OUR 3 TO 1 STUDENT-TUTOR RATIO (20-22 STUDENTS AND 7-8 MIDDLE SCHOOL) ALLOWS FOR STRONG RELATIONSHIPS TO FORM BETWEEN MENTORS AND THE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. THESE STRIDES FORWARD HAVE MADE PARTNERS A STAPLE IN WESTLAKE'S AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0HIGH SCHOOL TRANSITION PROGRAM - HSTPTHE HIGH SCHOOL TRANSITION PROGRAM COMPLETED THE 2013 YEAR WITH GREAT SUCCESS. THE PROGRAM PROVIDED 4 WORKSHOPS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. DURING THESE WORKSHOPS, PARTNERS STAFF ASSISTED FAMILIES WITH THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR CHARTER, PRIVATE, PUBLIC, AND PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS, SUCCESSFULLY ENROLLING 32 EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS IN 13 DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOLS. THE WORKSHOP UTILIZES SMALL GROUPS AND LECTURES WITH A 1 TO 5 RATIO OF STAFF TO FAMILIES TO ENSURE STUDENTS WERE APPLYING TO SCHOOLS THAT MATCHED THEIR INTERESTS AND ABILITIES. TO ENSURE PROGRAM REACH AND RELEVANCE, THE WORKSHOPS ALSO PROVIDE AT LEAST 2 STAFF MEMBERS WHO SPEAK LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH.THE COLLEGE COUNSELING - CCCTHE COLLEGE COUNSELING COLLABORATIVE (CCC) CONTINUED TO ENSURE POST-HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERS STUDENTS. THIS COLLABORATIVE EFFORT IS NOW IN ITS 2ND YEAR OF EXISTENCE. THE CCC WORKED WITH 20 ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS ENTERING THEIR SENIOR YEAR, ASSISTING THEM WITH THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS, FINANCIAL AID PROCESS, AND ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT. ON AVERAGE, STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO APPLY TO 5 - 7 SCHOOLS OF THEIR CHOOSING. ALL OF THE STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM CARRIED A B AVERAGE AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THEIR A-G REQUIREMENTS. THE QUALITY OF THE PROGRAM DEPENDS ON OUR SMALL RATIO OF 1 STAFF MEMBER TO EVERY 3 STUDENTS. SMALL RATIOS EQUATE TO EFFECTIVENESS. THIS GIVES EACH STUDENT AN OPPORTUNITY TO LOCATE AND SELECT THE BEST COLLEGES ACCORDING TO THEIR ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL INTERESTS.
