Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Management reviews the form 990 with the audit/finance committee and provides edits to the tax preparer. After this process is performed, the form 990 is sent to the full board prior to filing with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Identifying, reporting and handling potential conflicts of interest employee: if yiou are an employee, you should report any actual or potential conflict to your supervisor or to the ceo. The ceo, or his or her designee, will review the situation and decide what, if any, actions should be taken in response. Directors, officers and "key employees": special rules apply to directors, officers and "key employees." if you are a director or officer or have been notified that you are a key employee, of the organization, you must complete the "conflict of interest disclosure form" prior to you initial appointment and annually thereafter. In addition, during the year, if you become aware of an actual or potential conflict of interest, whether it involves you, or someone else associated with the organization, you must promptly notify the chairman of the board. The board of directors will review information obtained through the disclosure process to assess whether any disclosed relationships raise potential conflicts of interest and to determine appropriate steps to manage or resolve situations that may raise conflicts. If there is uncertainty about whether an actual or potential conflict of interest exists, the board of directors will consider the matter and make a determination. Where a member of the board of directors has a conflict of interest involving a matter that comes before the board of directors, the procedures below apply. The director may not be counted in determining the presence of a quorum at the meeting, even where applicable law permits this. >the director must disclose his or her interest in the matter to the other members of the board of directors, and disclose all material facts related to the matter. > the director may answer factual questions from other directors and staff and may briefly state his or her position on the matter. The director must recuse himself or herself from deliberations on the matter. The director will abstain from voting on the matter and will not be present during voting. The director may not attempt to influence improperly the deliberation or voting on the matter giving rise to such conflict. The minutes of the meeting where the matter is considered will reflect that: (i) without counting the director, a quorum was present; (ii) the director disclosed the conflict of interest and material facts about the conflict of interest, to the board of directors; (iii) the director abstained from deliberations and voting on the mattert; and (iv) the action that the board of directors or board committee took on the matter.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

There is one compensation practice governing the entire organization, including dosomething senior staff and key employees. Dosomething's salary policies are audited annually to ensure that they are competitive and equitable in the marketplace of youth-focused non-profit organizations. This process is undertaken annually for executive level staff (e.g.; vp finance & operations, vp development, vp communications & marketing, vp people & culture, and the vp of product & engineering). The board chair is responsible for approving the ceo's formal review and compensation annually and both are then sent to the full board for approval. In order to ensure fair compensation among senior staff, dosomething examined the compensation and benefits packages of similar organizations in new york city through their 990s, consulted several salary studies (including one conducted by an independent firm to assess salaries for ngos and tech companies in new york city), and engaged a nonprofit consulting company to do an external compensation equity audit.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's form 990 is made available for public inspection as required under section 6104 of the internal revenue code. It is posted on its website, the new york state attorney general website, guidestar.org and other similar types of websites. In addition, the form 990, governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are available to the public upon written request at 50 west,17th street, 11th floor, new york, ny 10011 or by calling the organization directly at (212) 254-2390.

IRS990/Desc0DOSOMETHING.ORG FUELS YOUNG PEOPLE TO CHANGE THE WORLD. OUR VISION IS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO COLLECTIVELY CHANGE THE WORLD BY TAKING ACTION ON THE MOST PRESSING ISSUES TO THEM. WE HAVE NEARLY 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE ACTIVATING YOUNG PEOPLE TO CHANGE THE WORLD. WE EDUCATE AND EQUIP OUR MEMBERS AS THEY START AND SUSTAIN THEIR JOURNEY TO BE CHANGE-AGENTS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. DOSOMETHING REMAINED A RELEVANT HUB FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMMITTED TO DOING GOOD IN 2021. YOUNG PEOPLE CONTINUED TO SHOW US THE WAY FORWARD AND WE LISTENED TO THEM. WE RAN 23 CAMPAIGNS IN 11 CAUSE SPACES. OUR MEMBERS LAUNCHED COMMUNITY-BUILDING EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN CONNECTIONS IN PERSON AND ONLINE. THEY ADVOCATED FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE DISPROPORTIONATELY EXPERIENCING THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE. THEY DEMANDED EQUITY AND HONESTY IN HOW SCHOOLS TEACH RACE AND RACISM AND EDUCATED THEMSELVES AND THEIR PEERS ABOUT HOW TOBACCO USE IS A SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUE. THEY OWNED THEIR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS AND WORKED TO DESTIGMATIZE THE TOPIC BY EQUIPPING THEMSELVES AND THEIR PEERS WITH DIVERSE, ACCESSIBLE MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES, WHILE ADVOCATING FOR ADDITIONAL HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES IN SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE. DOSOMETHING FUELED YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH CAMPAIGNS THAT WERE INTERSECTIONAL, EQUITABLE, AND IMPACTFUL: COMMUNITY BUILDING. OUR MEMBERS TOOK ACTION TO UNIFY AND BRING JOY BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES AFTER A SECOND YEAR OF LOSS AND UNCERTAINTY RESULTING FROM THE PANDEMIC BY VOLUNTEERING OVER 56,358 HOURS TO HELP THOSE IN NEED BY DONATING 349,029 NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS TO LOCAL FOOD BANKS AND 288,375 PERIOD PRODUCTS TO LOCAL HOMELESS SHELTERS. ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE JUSTICE. FUELED BY THEIR PASSION TO LEAVE THE EARTH BETTER THAN THEY FOUND IT, YOUNG PEOPLE COLLECTED 416,036 CIGARETTE BUTTS THROUGH GET THE FILTER OUT AND SAVED 5,691 POUNDS OF CO2 EMISSIONS BY SWITCHING FROM SOLO CAR RIDES TO CARPOOLS, BIKE RIDES, AND PUBLIC TRANSIT THROUGH GO THERE GREENER. WE EDUCATED YOUTH ABOUT CLIMATE INJUSTICE AND ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM THROUGH SEE US, HEAR US AND ACTIVATED THEM TO ENVISION A GREENER FUTURE THROUGH OUR FIRST-EVER "YOUTH MAP OF CLIMATE INJUSTICE." EQUITY & RACIAL JUSTICE. YOUNG PEOPLE'S ACTIVISM IN 2021 TARGETED SYSTEMIC RACIAL INEQUITIES AND INJUSTICES THAT INTERSECTED WITH EVERY ASPECT OF OUR SOCIETY. IN WHOLE HISTORIES, 21,995 YOUTH ADVOCATED FOR BETTER TEACHING STANDARDS ON RACE, RACISM, AND HISTORY AND THROUGH THE WHY WE SHOULD CARE CAMPAIGN OUR MEMBERS SHARED 7,893 PERSONAL STORIES OF HOW TOBACCO USE HAD A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THEMSELVES, THEIR LOVED ONES, AND THEIR COMMUNITIES. THROUGH STEM WORKS FOR ME, DOSOMETHING PROMPTED MEMBERS TO USE A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL TO MATCH THEIR INTERESTS TO A VIABLE AREA IN STEM AND SKILLED TRADES AND SHARE 12,268 OCCUPATIONS WITH THEIR PEERS TO INCREASE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF STEM-BASED CAREERS. HEALTH & MENTAL WELLNESS. OUR MEMBERS NAVIGATED THE SIGNIFICANT CONSEQUENCES OF SOCIAL ISOLATION, GRIEF, AND ANXIETY WROUGHT BY THE PANDEMIC, WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY TAKING STOCK OF THE SYSTEMIC DISPARITIES IN THE U.S. HEALTHCARE SYSTEM. OUR IT'S (NOT) ALL IN YOUR HEAD CAMPAIGN CREATED BY YOUNG PEOPLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN A VIRTUAL HACKATHON ACTIVATED THEM TO HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF SUFFICIENT AND EQUITABLE MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES IN SCHOOLS. THEY POSTED 4,846 FLYERS WITH INFORMATION ABOUT FREE AND IDENTITY-FOCUSED MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES AND ADVOCATED TO LOCAL AND STATE REPRESENTATIVES FOR ADDITIONAL RESOURCES FOR IN-SCHOOL COUNSELING SERVICES. COMPLETE WHAT'S MISSING EDUCATED YOUTH ABOUT HOW TO SPOT MEDICAL MISINFORMATION AND TAKE CHARGE OF THEIR PERSONAL HEALTH BY GETTING VACCINATED, ACTIVATING THEM TO SHARE APPROXIMATELY 29,000 GUIDES WITH THEIR PEERS TO MAKE INFORMED HEALTH DECISIONS.IN ADDITION TO OUR PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS, WE CONTINUE TO HAVE STRONG FINANCIALS AND FOR THE 15TH YEAR IN A ROW, WE RECEIVED 4 STARS ON CHARITY NAVIGATOR; LESS THAN 1% OF CHARITIES RECEIVED THIS RANKING FOR 15 CONSECUTIVE YEARS.
