Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Do something, inc. (the organization) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1993 to advocate and promote youth social leadership, community activism and citizenship. Today it is also known as dosomething org, and is one of the largest global organizations for young people and social change. A driving force in creating a culture of volunteerism, dosomething org is on track to activate 5 million members by 2015 by leveraging the web, television, mobile and pop culture, dosomething org inspires, empowers and celebrates a generation of doers. Teenagers who recognize the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action. The services are largely directed to young people (ages 13-25) who want to make a difference, but need help actively participating and leading in community change efforts. The call to action is always something that has a real impact and doesn't require money, an adult or a car.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

Management reviewed a draft of the form 990 with the audit/finance committee and provided edits to tax preparer. After this process was performed, the form 990 was sent to the full board prior to being filed with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization has a "board approved" conflicts of interest policy. Each board member must fill out an annual declaration stating they had no conflicts or identifying the nature of their interested party transactions.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Each year, the board of directors review comparable salaries based on a recognized study and reviews of performance of the ceo to determine if the existing salary falls within these ranges. After a deliberation of this matter, a new proposed salary and benefit package is voted on. The minutes of the board directors reflect the nature of this process.

IRS990/Desc0DOSOMETHING.ORG HAD ANOTHER INCREDIBLY SUCCESSFUL YEAR IN 2015. WE RECEIVED 5 STARS ON CHARITY NAVIGATOR FOR THE 9TH YEAR IN A ROW, LESS THAN 1% OF CHARITIES HAVE RECEIVED THIS RANKING FOR 9 CONSECUTIVE YEARS. WE WERE WIDELY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO WORK, INCLUDING BEST NONPROFITS TO WORK AND CRAIN'S TOP 100 BEST PLACES TO WORK IN NYC 2 YEARS IN A ROW (AND WE WERE THE ONLY NOT-FOR-PROFIT TO MAKE THE LIST THIS YEAR). WE WENT GLOBAL! IN 2015 WE LAUNCHED LOCALIZED, TRANSLATED CONTENT FOR NON-US MARKETS, AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCES FOR MEXICO AND BRAZIL. WE NOW HAVE MEMBERS IN 131 COUNTRIES AND COUNTING.DOSOMETHING.ORG ALSO CELEBRATED A MEMBERSHIP OF OVER 4.5 MILLION YOUNG PEOPLE AT THE END OF 2015, MAKING US ONE OF THE LARGEST ORGANIZATIONS (IN THE WORLD!) FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AND SOCIAL CHANGE. CAMPAIGNS ARE OUR BREAD & BUTTER AND THIS WAS AN AREA WHERE WE EXPANDED SIGNIFICANTLY. BY DECEMBER 2015, DOSOMETHING.ORG HAD OVER 275 UNIQUE CAMPAIGNS LIVE ON OUR WEBSITE. EACH CAMPAIGN IS BASED ON IMPACT RESEARCH THAT IS VERIFIED BY ACADEMIC RESEARCH, A STRATEGIC PARTNER ORGANIZATION WITH CAUSE EXPERTISE, OR A REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE. SOME OF OUR MOST SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGNS OF 2015 INCLUDE: - GTFO: ABOUT 1.69 BILLION POUNDS OF BUTTS END UP AS TOXIC TRASH EACH YEAR. THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT THESE BUTTS FROM HARMING WILDLIFE OR LEACHING CHEMICALS INTO THE ENVIRONMENT IS TO CLEAN THEM UP. OVER 78,000 MEMBERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY TOLD CIGARETTE LITTER TO GTFO AND CLEANED UP OVER 3.7 MILLION CIG BUTTS! THIS WAS THE NATION'S LARGEST YOUTH-LED CIGARETTE CLEAN UP CAMPAIGN.- THUMB WARS: AT LEAST 59% OF YOUNG PEOPLE KNOW TEXTING AND DRIVING IS DANGEROUS (DUH). BUT 46% DRIVE DISTRACTED ANYWAY. 120,134 MEMBERS DISTRIBUTED OVER 85,000 PAIRS OF THUMB SOCKS TO REMIND FRIENDS NOT TO TEXT AND DRIVE.- SCIENCE SLEUTH: GIRLS START OUT LOVING SCIENCE AS MUCH AS BOYS DO, BUT BY MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS ARE ONLY HALF AS INTERESTED IN THE SUBJECT. ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO GET GIRLS LOVING -- AND KICKING BUTT AT -- SCIENCE IS TO SHOW THEM WHAT PRO SCIENTISTS ACTUALLY DO. OVER 100,418 YOUNG PEOPLE USED SCIENCE TO SOLVE A TEXT-MESSAGE MYSTERY ON THEIR PHONES. THOSE WHO PLAYED UNLOCKED OVER $130,000 IN DONATIONS FROM 3M TO REAL CLASSROOMS IN NEED THROUGH DONORSCHOOSE. - TEENS FOR JEANS: OVER A MILLION YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCE HOMELESSNESS IN THE US EVERY YEAR. ONE ITEM THEY OFTEN REQUEST? A PAIR OF JEANS. IN 2015, 82,555 MEMBERS REPRESENTING 13,238 SCHOOLS IN THE US + CANADA SIGNED UP TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CAMPAIGN AND DONATED 723,188 PAIRS OF JEANS TO OVER 850 CHARITIES AND SHELTERS SERVING YOUNG PEOPLE.
