Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To preserve dance and promote dance literacy by use of the labanotation symbol system to record choreographed theatrical dances in order to ensure accurate stagings, faithful to the choreographer's intention and artistic vision, for the enjoyment of current and future audiences everywhere.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Library / archival services: the heart of the dnb's operation is its collection of 807 labanotation scores of dances that have been choreographed by 286 different artists. This core collection is supplemented by more than 10,000 related items that support the staging of the dances, including photos, videos, music scores and recordings, programs, costume sketches, and lighting and scenery designs - a collection that makes the dnb a unique archive in the world of dance. Many of the scores in the dnb archive have kept dances from disappearing over the years, including works by merce cunningham and george balanchine. The archive is open mondays through fridays from 10:00am - 5:30 pm year-round, by appointment. We also mail materials to patrons at their request. We add new scores to the collection each year, the product of our efforts to notate important old and new modern dance works and ballets. Archival preservation & dance research support: the dnb continued to enhance its online presence in fy13, with nea financial assistance, by adding 19 dances to our digital video archive (dva). The dva consists of performed excerpts of dances from our score archive. The dva is linked to the dnb's online catalog of notated theatrical dance. Digitized video clips (averaging 45 - 60 seconds in duration) from the dances serve as a visual aid to the dnb's online score catalog. The video excerpts of a dance are selected and edited based on a careful review of the labanotation score. The intention is to capture sections of the dance that illustrate its artistic significance, its central choreographic elements and style, and the technical skills required for performance. We receive permission from the choreographer, or heir, and follow the "fair use" guidelines published by the dance heritage coalition in its statement of best practices in fair use of dance-related materials (2009), which has been endorsed by the dance films association, among other organizations. The dva is helpful to colleges and dance companies in selecting suitable works to stage. Each clip is accompanied online by the section of labanotation score corresponding to the dance movements in the video clip. Readers of labanotation can "read-off" the movements as they view the clip. The dva includes a wide range of choreographic styles from modern and contemporary dance and ballet in the dnb's collection of scores: from sophie maslow's folksay (1942) to bill t. Jones's fever swamp (1983) and pilobolus' bonsai (1979). The video clips can be accessed either via the dnb website or directly from the dnb's youtube channel: www.youtube.com/dancenotationbureau. The dance heritage coalition continued to use the dnb as the new york technical processing hub for its preservation project for new york city based dance company archives. The dhc is leading the project, which began in november 2011, from the dnb offices. The hub upgrades and digitizes significant choreographer and dance company archives. Work on the digitization of eiko & koma's archives was completed. The dhc has coordinated the digitization of selected archival material from the martha graham dance company and meredith monk from the dnb offices. Through the dhc, the dnb library has also received in fy13, at no cost to the dnb, archival consulting assistance for our collection from two sources: the institute of museum and library services / laura bush 21st century librarian program, and the council on library and information resources.
Activity 3
Staging services: many of the dance scores in the dnb archive are licensed for performance to dance companies and universities, by agreements that we have in place with the choreographers or their heirs. The dnb collects license and royalty fees on behalf of the choreographer when a contract is entered into between the dnb and the organization licensing the dance for public performances. When called upon, the dnb will supply a stager who is expert in reading labanotation to set the work on the dancers from the score. Nearly 500 clients, including dance companies, schools and individuals have contracted with the dnb to stage dances that we license.the dnb completed the following 12 staging contracts for dances in the year ending 06/30/13, yielding 127 contracted performances of the works. University dance programs and dance companies throughout the usa, as well as companies and schools in france, and new zealand contracted for performances. An estimated audience of between 18,000 to 20,000 patrons will see, or have seen performances of the dances below. For each dance contracted in fy 2013, the following list includes: the name of the dance, followed by the choreographer's name, the name of the dance company or university that contracted for the dance, and the location of the performances (city / state or country). IRS990/Description0LABANOTATION:THE DNB PRESERVES DANCE LEGACIES AND PROMOTES DANCE LITERACY THROUGH THE TEACHING AND USE OF LABANOTATION TO RECORD AND STAGE CHOREOGRAPHED THEATRICAL DANCES. OUR PRINCIPAL MISSION IS TO ENSURE THAT THEATRICAL DANCES WILL CONTINUE TO BE PERFORMED IN VERSIONS TRUE TO THE CHOREOGRAPHER'S ARTISTIC VISION. TO FULLY CAPTURE THE DETAILS OF THE ARTIST'S INTENTIONS, THE DNB USES LABANOTATION, A SYMBOL SYSTEM FOR RECORDING HUMAN MOVEMENT, TO DOCUMENT DANCES ON BOTH PAPER AND DIGITAL MEDIA. INTRODUCED IN 1928, LABANOTATION IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE AND COMPREHENSIVE SYSTEM TO OBJECTIVELY ANALYZE AND DESCRIBE HUMAN MOVEMENT IN SPACE AND TIME. THE DNB RECEIVES FUNDING FROM GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS TO RECORD THEATRICAL DANCES USING THE LABANOTATION SYSTEM. THE FOLLOWING LABANOTATION DANCE SCORES WERE EITHER IN PROGRESS OR COMPLETED IN THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2013:1) HERETIC (MARTHA GRAHAM, CHOREOGRAPHER, 1929) LABANOTATION SCORE COMPLETED SEPTEMBER 2012.2) HELIOS - RITUAL TO THE SUN (MARTHA GRAHAM, CHOREOGRAPHER, 1981) LABANOTATION SCORE COMPLETED MARCH 2013. 3) CROSSWALK (MARK MORRIS, CHOREOGRAPHER, 2013) LABANOTATION SCORE COMPLETED JUNE 2013. 4) SPRING, SPRING, SPRING (MARK MORRIS, CHOREOGRAPHER, 2013) LABANOTATION SCORE IN PROGRESS. MOVEMENT CAPTURE PHASE COMPLETED IN JUNE 2013. THE LABANOTATION SCORE IS SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION APRIL 2014. 5) CAKEWALK - FROM AMERICANA SUITE (KATHERINE DUNHAM, CHOREOGRAPHER, 1940) LABANOTATION SCORE IN PROGRESS AND SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION BY SEPTEMBER 2013. DNB'S LABANOTATION PROGRAM INCLUDES AN ONGOING PROJECT TO DIGITIZE OLDER HANDWRITTEN LABANOTATION SCORES IN OUR LIBRARY. LABANWRITER, A SOFTWARE APPLICATION SIMILAR TO A WORD PROCESSOR, BUT EMPLOYING A PALLET OF NOTATION SYMBOLS, IS USED TO TRANSCRIBE HANDWRITTEN SCORES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PUBLICATION READY COPY THAT CAN ALSO BE ARCHIVED DIGITALLY IN PDF FORMAT ON DISK OR CD-ROM. THE CRITERIA USED TO SELECT SCORES FOR TRANSCRIPTION INCLUDE THE PHYSICAL CONDITION OF THE SCORE, THE FREQUENCY WITH WHICH THE DANCE IS STAGED, AND THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE WORK. THE TRANSCRIPTION PROCESS ALSO BRINGS SCORES UP TO THE LATEST LABANOTATION GRAMMATICAL STANDARDS. THE FOLLOWING LABANOTATION SCORES (LISTED BY CHOREOGRAPHER / DANCE TITLE / YEAR CHOREOGRAPHED) WERE DIGITIZED BY THE USE OF LABANWRITER SOFTWARE DURING THE YEAR THAT ENDED JUNE 30, 2013. 1) DORIS HUMPHREY, RITMO JONDO (1953: TRANSCRIPTION COMPLETED SEPTEMBER 20122) HELEN MCGEHEE, I AM THE GATE (1957: TRANSCRIPTION COMPLETED MARCH 20133) JEFF DUNCAN, THREE FICTITIOUS GAMES (1957): TRANSCRIPTION COMPLETED MAY 2013
