Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To preserve dance and promote dance literacy by use of the labanotation symbol system to record choreographed theatrical dances in order to ensure accurate stagings, faithful to the choreographer's intention and artistic vision, for the enjoyment of current and future audiences everywhere.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The heart of the DNB's operation is its collection of 784 Labanotation scores of dances that have been choreographed by 271 different artists. This core collection is supplemented by 10,000 related items that support the staging of the dances, including photos, videos, music scores and recordings, programs, costume sketches, and lighting and scenery designs - a collection that makes the DNB a unique archive in the world of dance. Many of the scores in the DNB archive have kept dances from disappearing over the years, including works by Merce Cunningham and George Balanchine. The archive is open Mondays through Fridays from 10AM - 6PM year-round, by appointment. We also mail materials to patrons at their request. We add new scores to the collection each year, the product of our efforts to notate important old and new modern dance works and ballets. In April 2010 the DNB implemented a web-based searchable catalog of the DNB's archive of Labanotation scores and related material. It is called the Notated Theatrical Dances Catalog (NTDC). The application is available from the DNB's website (www.dancenotation.org). In addition to indexing information, the NTDC stores and presents over 120 data elements of descriptive information about each of the 784 scores (current count) in the archive. An interactive search capability allows the user to refine inquiries based on more than a dozen selection criteria. Anyone with web browser software and an internet connection is able to interactively search the DNB's score catalog from any device, including an iPhone. Dance companies, university dance departments, stagers, dance students, scholars and interested laypersons use the NTDC. In the year ending June 30, 2010, the DNB website, which hosts the NTDC, had 25,651 unique visitors, of which 22,668 were first-time visitors. There were 2,983 return visitors.
Activity 3
Many of the dance scores in the DNB Archive are licensed for performance to dance companies and universities, by agreements that we have in place with the choreographers or their heirs. The DNB collects license and royalty fees on behalf of the choreographer when a contract is entered into between the DNB and the organization licensing the dance for public performances. When called upon, the DNB will supply a stager who is expert in reading Labanotation to set the work on the dancers from the score. Over 460 clients, including dance companies, schools and individuals have contracted with the DNB to stage dances that we license. The DNB completed the following staging contracts for dances in the year ending 06/30/10. A total of 181 performances were contracted. The estimated audience of between 15,000 to 18,000 patrons will see, or have seen performances of the dances below. For each dance contracted in FY 2010, the following list includes: the name of the dance, followed by the choreographers name, the name of the dance company or university that contracted for the dance, and the location of the performances (city / state or country). IRS990/Description0The DNB preserves dance legacies and promotes dance literacy through the teaching and use of Labanotation to record and stage choreographed theatrical dances. Our principal mission is to ensure that theatrical dances will continue to be performed in versions true to the choreographer's artistic vision. To fully capture the details of the artist's intentions, the DNB uses Labanotation, a symbol system for recording human movement, to document dances on both paper and digital media. Introduced in 1928, Labanotation is considered to be the most effective and comprehensive system to objectively analyze and describe human movement in space and time. The DNB receives funding from government agencies, private foundations and individuals to record theatrical dances using the Labanotation system. The following Labanotation dance scores were either in progress or completed in the year ending June 30, 2010:1) Celebration (Martha Graham, Choreographer). Labanotation score completed December 2009.2) Frontier (M. Graham). Labanotation score completed December 2009.3) Deep Song (M. Graham). Labanotation score completed May 2010. 4) Rainwood (Ze'eva Cohen, Choreographer). Labanotation score completed December 2009.5) Las Desenamoradas (Eleo Pomare, Choreographer) Labanotation score in progress. DNB's Labanotation program includes an ongoing project to digitize older handwritten Labanotation scores in our library. LabanWriter, a software application similar to a word processor, but employing a pallet of notation symbols, is used to transcribe handwritten scores for the production of publication ready copy that can also be archived digitally in PDF format on disk or CD-ROM. The criteria used to select scores for transcription include the physical condition of the score, the frequency with which the dance is staged, and the historical significance of the work. The transcription process also brings scores up to the latest Labanotation grammatical standards. Five to ten scores are digitized each year using the LabanWriter application.
