Mission

To provide nyc children from low-income families with cultural, recreational, and educational experiences at its camps and with volunteer host families and through year-round academic programs.

THE FRESH AIR FUND, an independent not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1A

The Fund's Board of Directors has an Executive Committee with authority to act when the board is not in session. The Executive Committee is composed of a subset of eight members of the board: Wendy Flanagan, John N. Irwin III, Derrick Cephas, Winthrop Rutherfurd Jr., Craig Ivey, Ruth Houghton, LizbethAnn Rogovoy Eisen, and Bradley Whitman.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The information to prepare Form 990 is collected by various members of the organization's Finance office. The Form 990 is prepared by the organization's CFO, reviewed by the Executive Director and an independent accounting firm and presented to the Audit Committee for approval. Upon approval, the Form 990 is made available to the full governing board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

At the organization's annual board meeting, a reaffirmation of the conflict of interest policy is distributed and members are requested to individually sign-off that they are aware of and will report any conflicts that exist. Follow-up efforts are conducted for anyone not submitting a form at the annual meeting. The sign-off forms are collected by the organization and kept on file.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The organization's CFO prepares annually a salary survey of the key management positions in the organization, including the Executive Director. Such salary data are collected from various well-known and publicly available sources. Comparative metrics of peer groups by budget and asset size, nature and scope of services, and geographic proximity are developed and presented for discussion to the organization's Executive Committee, which acts in the capacity of the organization's Compensation Committee. Within executive session of the Executive Committee meeting, the compensation level of all staff are approved as recommended by management or revised by the committee at its discretion. Such deliberation and decision is documented contemporaneously.

IRS990/Desc0The Fresh Air Fund's camping programs take place at The Fund's Sharpe Reservation, which has over 2,000 acres of wilderness property, in Fishkill, NY. In the summer, 3,000 New York City children learn and grow through immersive outdoor experiences. During the summer, campers swim and row boats on the lake, stargaze, hike nature trails and learn about animals and where their food comes from at the camp farm and nutrition center. Campers return home with more confidence, new skills and new friends. During the school year, campers are invited to participate in year-round leadership and educational programs through tutoring and mentoring programs. The Fund's academic enrichment and leadership programs provide students with a strong network of support on their academic journey through its Career Awareness Program, the College Connections Programs and its Teen Leadership Programs.
