| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Van Alen CompetitionsSince 1894, Van Alen Institute has sponsored public design competitions identifying critical issues and developing partnerships that engage the public sphere. Van Alen Institute has initiated and collaborated on some of New York's most innovative open-call public design competitions, addressing sites ranging from Wall Street,and Times Square to Governor's Island and Gateway National Recreation Area. In 2013, Van Alen was a partner in the Rebuild By Design competition, which was an initiative of the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and the U.S. Department of Housing and urban Development aimed at addressing structure and environmental vulnerabilities that Hurricane Sandy exposed in communities through the region. The competition received proposals from ten design teams that were comprised of experts from across planning, design, engineering and science to critically consider the task of rebuilding. Also in 2013, Van Alen partnered with the Times Square Alliance in a competition for their annual Valentine Heart Design, which is showcased in Times Square over Valentines Day. Additionally, Van Alen worked on Changing Course, a design initiative for the lower Mississippi River Delta in collaboration with the Environmental Defense Fund. |

With over 500 individuals attending, this was the first season of what will be a multi-year exploration of the urban environment as a place to escape both to and from. |
