Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Venice arts' mission is to ignite, expand, and transform the lives of los angeles' low-income youth through photography and film education, and to use our participatory storytelling practices to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities around the world. We do this by building creative equity for low-income youth through media arts education, college success, and creative career pathway programs where we put creativity at the center of youth development. Our programs build skills, knowledge, and self-efficacy, while maximizing our participants' ability to find the resiliency necessary to thrive, even in the face of racism, class marginalization, and/or immigration status.

Venice arts' mission is to ignite youths' imagination, mentor their creativity and expand their sense of possibility through high quality, accessible media-based arts education programs. Venice arts also serves as a catalyst for people of all ages, living in low-income or underrepresented communities, to create and share personal and community stories through photography, film and multi-media.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Venice arts' mission is to ignite youths' imagination, mentor their creativity and expand their sense of possibility through high quality, accessible media-based arts education programs. Venice arts also serves as a catalyst for people of all ages, living in low-income or underrepresented communities, to create and share personal and community stories through photography, film and multi-media.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

Volunteers include artists providing donated service and instruction.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

While more than 60% participated for two years or more. The advanced studies track, which prepares talented teens for college and career, enrolled more than 70 youth. In addition to advanced workshops, support for independent projects, and additional exhibition opportunities, advanced studies provided 9 internships at venice arts as youth art mentors, 1 part-time, paid summer position for a recent venice arts graduate, and 3 placements at creative companies (film, television, and post-production). Additionally, 6 college interns were placed and trained in development/administration, mentoring and education, and/or exhibitions. One hundred percent (100%) of advanced studies' graduates went on to college, with most receiving full scholarships to institutes of higher learning (cal arts, nyu tisch, boston university); one was selected for the warner brothers reach honorship, which provides a scholarship and guaranteed, full-time summer employment during the four years of college; three received full scholarships for the residential summer art program at idyllywild arts; and one received a full scholarship to the summer animation program at otis college of art and design. In addition, were supported to submit their work for awards and competitions. As an outcome, our teen artists won over 20 national, state, and local competitions including two national young arts awards (one silver award with a 5,000 scholarship); seven scholastic arts and writing awards; two film festivals awards (selection; winner); and four nikon college & high school photography awards. In addition to art mentoring & education, venice arts' sustained our artpartners program, providing a workshop series at olympic continuation high school, a school of "last resort" in santa monica, and at the mar vista family center, serving the highly impoverished community in and surrounding mar vista gardens.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Consultation & training: (1%) in 2015 our focus in this area was primarily on building new relationships that might result in new consulting projects. We completed an engagement with a se asian environmental ngo, the center for people and forests, in which we had trained their community members and communications staff in video-based storytelling (2014). In 2015, we completed edits on the four videos produced through this effort, helped to disseminate them online, and submitted them to relevant film festivals.
