Activity 2

iCare Vision Project. Our dedicated teams of optometrists, ophthalmologists, opticians and helpers provided free eye exams, glasses and referrals for urgent care to nearly 4000 persons in 2011 in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. We also launched a nursing program that provided free blood pressure and blood sugar testing for eye patients while they waited to see the eye doctors. Because of our work, thousands of children and adults had pain, suffering and humiliation turned into beautiful white healthy smiles of pride and joy. Thousands of children are improving their reading skills and as such are acquiring the one skill most necessary to break the vicious cycle of poverty and crime. And thousands of mostly poor rural Jamaicans can now see again because of our dedicated iCare team. Most of those we help are seeing a dentist, getting an eye exam, sending an email or taking a book home for the first time in their lives!

Activity 3

SuperKids Literacy Project. This is our literacy program, whose primary focus is to improve reading literacy. We worked in 13 rural schools in the Parish of St. Ann impacting the lives of over 12,000 children ages 4 to 12. Children in these schools have a literacy rate below 50%. The program incorporated a holistic & multi-faceted approach to improving literacy by: oProviding literacy training to Jamaican teachers oProviding 10,000 reading books put in the hands & homes of kids oProviding networked and online computer labs oPurchasing uniforms for the poorest children so they don't miss class oProviding music, art and sports supplies and equipment for schools to augment the children's learning experience. We also launched the MIT summer teacher training program which aims to improve primary school teachers computer literacy. Thousands of children are improving their reading skills and as such are acquiring the one skill most necessary to break the vicious cycle of poverty and crime. Most of those we help are sending an email or taking a book home for the first time in their lives!
