Mission

The oregon humane society's mission is to foster an environment of respect, responsibility, and compassion for all animals through education, legislation and leadership; to take care of the homeless, to defend the abused, and to fight with unrelenting diligence for the recognition of the integrity of all animals.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Medical services - during the year ended december 31, 2011, the society performed 12,369 surgeries in the animal medical learning center (the "center"), including 11,241 spay and neuter surgeries and 1,128 other essential and emergency surgeries. In addition, the center facilitated 1,501 foster care patient visits, provided 7,399 medical exams for pets, and taught 59 oregon state university veterinary medical students.
Activity 3
Community awareness - educating the community and promoting animals and programs are crucial to helping the society achieve its mission of finding a home for every animal in oregon. In addition to a vibrant education department, the society's public relations and marketing department strives to promote humane lessons through the media, special events, and real-time photos of animals available for adoption on the society's web site.in 2011:* visitors to the shelter totaled 220,819 (on average, 481 people visit the society each day);* adoptions averaged 32 per day;* incoming phone calls numbered 328,082;* the society issued 110 media releases;* print articles totaling 455 circulated in 61 unique publications;* the society received television news time of 481 minutes;* community events numbered 140, with 102 of them featuring adoption outreach;* the society's magazine reached 30,000 readers;* the society's web site averaged 6,326 daily visitors; and* the average stay on the society's web site was 6:37 minutes.

IN 2011, THEY TRAVELED ACROSS OREGON TO INVESTIGATE 1,032 NEW CASES OF ANIMAL CRUELTY, LEADING TO OVER 828 ANIMALS BEING SEIZED OR REMOVED FROM HARM'S WAY, 26 CRIMINAL CASES, AND ASSISTED LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AND VETERINARY FORENSIC SERVICES 10 TIMES. CURRENTLY, THERE ARE 30 ACTIVE AAI VOLUNTEERS WHO, IN 2011, SPENT 1,937 HOURS VISITING 32 FACILITIES WITH A PET PARTNER. THE VOLUNTEER HOURS INCLUDE 522 HOURS IN AAI CLASS AND EVALUATIONS, AND 1,415 HOURS VISITING IN THE COMMUNITY.

THE SPAY & SAVE PROGRAM WORKS TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF CATS AND KITTENS THAT ARE COMING INTO PORTLAND AREA SHELTERS EVERY YEAR. THE OREGON HUMANE SOCIETY IS THE FOUNDER AND LEADING AGENCY IN THIS ENDEAVOR. IN 2011, THE SPAY & SAVE PROGRAM COMPLETED 9,724 SURGERIES, OF WHICH 5,007 WERE PERFORMED BY SOCIETY STAFF. THROUGH THE SECOND CHANCE PROGRAM, THE SOCIETY SAVES MORE LIVES BY ACCEPTING ANIMALS WHOSE TIME HAS RUN OUT AT SHELTERS AND ANIMAL CONTROL AGENCIES ACROSS OREGON, WASHINGTON, AND CALIFORNIA. THE SAVE RATE ACCURATELY REFLECTS THE MANY OPTIONS FOR PETS THAT COME TO THE SHELTER BESIDES ADOPTION - FOR EXAMPLE, ANIMAL TRANSFERS TO BREED RESCUE AND ANIMALS THAT ARE RETURNED TO THEIR OWNER.* THE SOCIETY SAVED A TOTAL OF 12,118 ANIMALS;* THE SOCIETY SAVED 4,765 DOGS - 99% OF ALL DOGS THAT VISITED THE SHELTER;* THE SOCIETY SAVED 5,474 CATS - 96% OF ALL CATS THAT VISITED THE SHELTER; AND* THE SOCIETY SAVED 1,867 OTHER ANIMALS - 98% OF ALL OTHER ANIMALS THAT VISITED THE SHELTER.* THE SOCIETY ALSO SAVED 12 WILDLIFE - 91% OF ALL WILDLIFE THAT VISITED THE SHELTER.ADOPTION OUTREACH* A TOTAL OF 564 ANIMALS FOUND HOMES DIRECTLY THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, A 74% INCREASE;* THE NEW WESTSIDE ADOPTION CENTER FACILITATED 357 ADOPTIONS;* THERE WERE 102 ADOPTIONS FROM OUTREACH EVENTS; AND* THE PROGRAM REACHED 138,660 PEOPLE IN 2011.
