Mission

The oregon humane society's mission is to foster an environment of respect, responsibility, and compassion for all animals through education, legislation and leadership; to take care of the homeless, to defend the abused, and to fight with unrelenting diligence for the recognition of the integrity of all animals.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Medical services - during the year ended december 31, 2012, the society performed 12,847 surgeries in the animal medical learning center (the "center"), including 11,504 spay and neuter surgeries and 1,343 other essential and emergency surgeries. In addition, the center facilitated 1,539 foster care patient visits, provided 7,919 medical exams for pets, and taught 85 oregon state university veterinary medical students.
Activity 3
Community awareness - educating the community and promoting animals and programs are crucial to helping the society achieve its mission of finding a home for every animal in oregon. In addition to a vibrant education department, the society's public relations and marketing department strives to promote humane lessons through the media, special events, and real-time photos of animals available for adoption on the society's web site. In 2012: * visitors to the shelter totaled 182,947 - a 15.9% increase (on average, 508 people visit the society each day - open 360 days); * adoptions averaged 31 per day; * incoming phone calls numbered 339,418; * the society issued 99 media releases; * print articles totaling 373 circulated in 52 unique publications; * the society received television news time of 603 minutes - a 25% increase; * community events numbered 131, with 83 of them featuring adoption outreach; * the society's magazine reached 30,000 readers; * the society's web site averaged 6,742 daily visitors; and * the average stay on the society's web site was 6:30 minutes.

THE PROJECT OPERATES EXCLUSIVELY IN A NEIGHBORHOOD PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED THROUGH GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM ("GIS") MAPPING AS HAVING VERY HIGH SHELTER INTAKE OF PIT BULLS AND CATS. NPP PROVIDES FREE SPAY & NEUTER SURGERIES, VACCINES, RABIES AND LICENSE, PERSONALIZED ID TAGS, CRATES, TRAINING, AND MORE FOR NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS THAT OWN PIT BULLS AND CATS. ASAP HOPES THAT THESE SERVICES WILL ALLOW PETS TO STAY WITH THEIR FAMILIES AND NOT END UP IN AREA SHELTERS AND AS PART OF THE GRANT REQUIREMENTS PROVIDES DETAILED GIS AND OTHER DATA TO THE ASPCA ON A MONTHLY BASIS SO THAT THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE INITIATIVE CAN BE ANALYZED.

IRS990/Description0SHELTERING AND ADOPTIONS - THE OREGON HUMANE SOCIETY CONTINUES TO MAINTAIN ONE OF THE HIGHEST ADOPTIONS RATES IN THE COUNTRY - 11,225 TOTAL ADOPTIONS FOR 2012. THE ANIMALS THAT FOUND NEW HOMES CONSTITUTE AN OVERALL 98% ADOPTION RATE. THROUGH THE SECOND CHANCE PROGRAM, THE SOCIETY SAVES MORE LIVES BY ACCEPTING ANIMALS WHOSE TIME HAS RUN OUT AT SHELTERS AND ANIMAL CONTROL AGENCIES ACROSS OREGON, WASHINGTON, HAWAII AND CALIFORNIA. IN 2012, 4,175 ANIMALS WERE ACCEPTED FROM 67 ORGANIZATIONS.2012 ADOPTION RATES* THE SOCIETY ADOPTED OUT 4,796 DOGS - 99% OF ALL DOGS THAT VISITED THE SHELTER; * THE SOCIETY ADOPTED OUT 5,432 CATS - 97% OF ALL CATS THAT VISITED THE SHELTER; AND * THE SOCIETY ADOPTED OUT 997 OTHER ANIMALS - 94% OF ALL OTHER ANIMALS THAT VISITED THE SHELTER. 2012 SAVE RATESIN ADDITION TO THE ADOPTION RATE, THE OREGON HUMANE SOCIETY ALSO MAINTAINS DATA ON THE SAVE RATE, CALCULATED ACCORDING TO THE ASILOMAR STANDARD. THE SAVE RATE ACCURATELY REFLECTS THE MANY OPTIONS FOR PETS THAT COME TO THE SHELTER BESIDES ADOPTION FOR EXAMPLE, ANIMAL TRANSFERS TO BREED RESCUE AND ANIMALS THAT ARE RETURNED TO THEIR OWNER. * THE SOCIETY SAVED A TOTAL OF 11,857 ANIMALS WITH A LIVE RELEASE RATE OF 98%; * THE SOCIETY SAVED 5,160 DOGS - 99% OF ALL DOGS THAT VISITED THE SHELTER; * THE SOCIETY SAVED 5,623 CATS - 98% OF ALL CATS THAT VISITED THE SHELTER; AND * THE SOCIETY SAVED 1,074 OTHER ANIMALS - 96% OF ALL OTHER ANIMALS THAT VISITED THE SHELTER. ADOPTION OUTREACH* A TOTAL OF 253 ANIMALS FOUND HOMES DIRECTLY THROUGH THIS PROGRAM; AND* THERE WERE 83 EVENTS THAT INCLUDED PETS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION; AND * THE PROGRAM REACHED 123,616 PEOPLE IN 2012.
