SPECIFIC LEGAL SERVICES INCLUDE DRIVERS RELICENSING, LAND-LORD TENANT ISSUES, HOUSING DISCRIMINATION, AND ACCESS TO GOVERNMENT SERVICES AND HEALTH CARE. IN 2013, 275 CLIENTS WERE PROVIDED DRIVERS RELICENSING SERVICES, 11 WERE ASSISTED WITH PUBLIC BENEFITS, 6 WERE ASSISTED WITH CONSUMER PROTECTION ISSUES, AND 7 WITH EMPLOYMENT ISSUES. EACH CLIENT IS ALSO PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY TO REGISTER TO VOTE AND PROVIDED EDUCATION ON REGISTRATION ISSUES IN 2013, 14 PEOPLE WERE REGISTERED TO VOTE. IN ADDITION, THE CENTER PROVIDES A MONTHLY EVENING JUSTICE NIGHT WHICH CONNECTS VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS WITH THOSE SEEKING BASIC LEGAL QUESTIONS OR REFERRALS TO OTHER SERVICES. IN 2013, 115 PEOPLE WERE PROVIDED SERVICES THROUGH THE JUSTICE NIGHT PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM UTILIZES VOLUNTEERS AND NON-ATTORNEY ADVOCATES WITH ATTORNEY SUPERVISION.

THE RIVERKEEPER IS PART OF AN INTERNATIONAL WATERKEEPER ALLIANCE THAT COLLABORATES TO SEEK STATE, NATIONAL, AND EVEN INTERNATIONAL CHANGES TO LAWS AND POLICIES THAT BENEFIT OUR HOME WATERSHEDS. THE RIVERKEEPER PROGRAM IS LED BY A NON-ATTORNEY RIVERKEEPER AND IS SUPPORT BY VOLUNTEERS AND A CENTER ATTORNEY.

DURING 2013, 72 CLIENTS WERE ASSISTED WITH LANDLORD-TENANT ISSUES, 9 WERE ASSISTED WITH POLICE MISCONDUCT ISSUES, 15 WERE ASSISTED WITH CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES, 6 WERE ASSISTED WITH DISCRIMINATION ISSUES, AND 7 WERE PROVIDED ASSISTANCE WITH ISSUES OF GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY. THIS PROGRAM IS IMPLEMENTED BY CENTER ATTORNEYS.

THIS INCLUDE MEASURES SUCH AS ELECTRONIC HOME MONITORING, DIVERSION PROGRAMS SUCH AS DRUG COURT, AND OTHER MEASURES THAT REDUCE RECIDIVISMS RATES, PROVIDE A DETERRENT TO CRIME, AND ARE COST EFFECTIVE.DURING 2013, THE CENTER SUCCESSFULLY ADVOCATED FOR THE CREATION OF A LOCAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE COMMISSION, WHICH ISSUED A COMPREHENSIVE REPORT SUPPORTING THE CENTERS SMART JUSTICE POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS. THE CENTERS WORK ON SMART JUSTICE IS CONDUCTED IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER LOCAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, FAITH-BASED GROUPS, AND JUSTICE ADVOCATES. THE WORK IS PRIMARILY CONDUCTED BY CENTER VOLUNTEERS AND ATTORNEYS.
