Mission

The center for justice is a community-based legal advocacy organization working on issues of social and environmental justice in the inland northwest. The center provides direct client legal representation and advocates for policy changes.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

The center launched its health and justice initiative, as part of its general law program. This initiative seeks to partner legal service lawyers with medical professionals that serve the low income community to address health issues that may have a legal component - i.e., substandard housing that is impacting a patient's health. This program is conducted in partnership with a variety of medical providers, academia, social service providers, and foundations in the community. In addition, due to a grant received from the washington legal foundation, the center launched a program to provide legal assistance to formerly incarcerated clients and to provide representation to those who are currently incarcerated who have been denied civil rights.

CFJ'S RELICENSING PROGRAM CHANGES LIVES BY GIVING PEOPLE AN OPPORTUNITY TO STOP THE CYCLE OF DEBT, INCARCERATION, AND UNEMPLOYMENT CAUSED BY INDEFINITE LICENSE SUSPENSION. EACH CLIENT IS ALSO PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY TO REGISTER TO VOTE AND PROVIDED EDUCATION ON REGISTRATION ISSUES. IN 2014, WE PROVIDED RELICENSING ASSISTANCE TO 370 CLIENTS. THE PROGRAM UTILIZES VOLUNTEERS AND NON-ATTORNEY ADVOCATES WITH ATTORNEY SUPERVISION.

THE RIVERKEEPER PROGRAM IS LED BY A NON-ATTORNEY RIVERKEEPER AND IS SUPPORTED BY VOLUNTEERS AND A CENTER ATTORNEY.

A TOTAL OF 180 CLIENTS WERE PROVIDED ASSISTANCE IN THESE AREAS. KEY COMPONENT OF THIS PROGRAM INCLUDE PROVIDING LEGAL SERVICES TO THOSE WHO WERE INCARCERATED, TO ADDRESS BARRIERS TO RE-ENTRY INTO THE COMMUNITY AND RE-EMPLOYMENT, AND TO PROVIDE LEGAL REPRESENTATION TO THOSE CURRENTLY INCARCERATED WHO HAVE BEEN DENIED THEIR CIVIL RIGHTS. IN 2014, 69 CLIENTS WERE CURRENTLY OR FORMERLY INCARCERATED CLIENTS WERE PROVIDED ASSISTANCE UNDER THIS PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM ALSO INCLUDES OUR HEALTH AND JUSTICE INITIATIVE, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO ASSIST HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS IN USING THE LAW AS A TOOL TO LOWER COSTS AND IMPROVE HEALTH. THE GENERAL LAW PROGRAM IS IMPLEMENTED BY CENTER ATTORNEYS. LASTLY, THE PROGRAM INCLUDES OUR ORGANIZATION OF A MONTHLY EVENING "JUSTICE NIGHT" WHICH CONNECTS VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS WITH THOSE SEEKING BASIC LEGAL QUESTIONS OR REFERRALS TO OTHER SERVICES. IN 2014, 116 INDIVIDUALS WERE PROVIDED ASSISTANCE AT OUR JUSTICE NIGHTS.

DURING 2013, THE CENTER SUCCESSFULLY ADVOCATED FOR THE CREATION OF A LOCAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE COMMISSION, WHICH ISSUED A COMPREHENSIVE REPORT SUPPORTING THE CENTER'S SMART JUSTICE POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS. THE CENTER'S WORK ON SMART JUSTICE IS CONDUCTED IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER LOCAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, FAITH-BASED GROUPS, AND JUSTICE ADVOCATES. THE WORK IS PRIMARILY CONDUCTED BY CENTER VOLUNTEERS AND ATTORNEYS.THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OPEN GOVERNMENT PROJECT WORKS ON SYSTEMIC ISSUES OF INJUSTICE IN OUR COMMUNITY, INCLUDING WORKING FOR MEANINGFUL POLICE OVERSIGHT BY A CIVILIAN OMBUDSMAN. THE PROGRAM ALSO UTILIZES THE CENTER'S WEBSITE AS A MEANS TO TELL STORIES OF INJUSTICE AND THOSE WORKING TO ADDRESS THOSE PROBLEMS IN OUR COMMUNITY. IN ADDITION TO OUR POLICY ADVOCACY ON ISSUES OF POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY, THE CENTER PROVIDED ASSISTANCE TO 14 CLIENTS ON POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY MATTERS IN 2014.
