- Affiliated school activities-The Alliance for Education provided no-cost fiscal administration to over 200 groups supporting neighborhood schools and their programs. These groups include PTAs and programs in academics, the arts, languages, public service, technology, sports and other enrichment areas. In 2012, the Alliance processed and acknowledged more than 5,000 donations on behalf of these grass roots groups, and disbursed over $1.27 million for instructional support, scholarships, awards, materials, trainings, extracurricular programs and other school-related activities.

| IRS990/Description | 0 | Partnering with Seattle Public Schools (SPS), the Alliance leverages philanthropic educational investments and provides strategic and programmatic support to create systemic impact at all schools across the city. By leveraging over $9 million since 2008 to help implement the school district's strategic plan (http://bit.ly/ExcellenceForAll) and holding SPS accountable for performance, the Alliance contributed to the following accomplishments:- An increase in the on-time high school graduation rate to 74%; this reflects an 11 point increase overall, a 12 point increase for students of color, and a 14 point increase for low income students since 2008.- Increases in percentages of students passing OSPI's standardized tests in Math (62% to 69%), Science (51% to 74%), and Reading (73% to 77%).- 65% of students taking Advanced Placement courses during high school, a 14 point increase since 2008.- The number of "low performing" schools on SPS's Segmentation Framework declining by nearly two-thirds (See http://goo.gl/vmIHG).The Alliance's theory of action is that Academic Rigor, Effective Teaching, and Leadership Development are the three highest-leverage investments we can make to improve academic outcomes. As such, these priorities are reflected in all of our work.- In the SEATTLE COLLEGE ACCESS NETWORK, we lead 40 independent providers in a collaborative plan to increase post-secondary enrollment of low income and students of color. In 2012, the network enrolled 92% of eligible 8th graders in the state's College Bound scholarship program for low income students.- With the Technology Alliance and the League of Education Voters, we co-lead the 35-member OUR SCHOOLS COALITION (OSC) to identify barriers to academic achievement and then conduct campaigns to promote specific policies to change results. Influenced by OSC's work in 2010, evaluations of teachers now reference students' academic growth and qualified teachers have more career opportunities. The Center on Reinventing Public Education stated, "Seattle's labor agreement (influenced by OSC's advocacy) is best of breed relative to other leading edge districts."- Our INTENSIVE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS project is strengthening school-community partnerships and data-based decision making among leaders of schools and agencies that provide school-based student support services. The new partnership framework being piloted at 3 sites sets protocols for how school and agency leaders coordinate, plan and evaluate the effectiveness of services.- The SEATTLE TEACHER RESIDENCY project was launched in collaboration with the UW College of Education and SPS. Teacher residency projects adapt the medical residency model to create a year-long classroom-based training program to prepare teaching candidates to change academic outcomes in high-need schools in their specific districts. A diverse planning team began developing the graduate level curriculum and detailed program design in July 2012 with the expectation of completion by the fall of 2013 when 25 highly qualified residents begin a full year of training at carefully selected high-need Seattle schools. See www.seattleteacherresidency.org for more information.- Our SCHOOL BOARD support helps board members apply best practices in governance. We organized 4 retreats facilitated by national experts in school board leadership, facilitated an audit of obsolete policies, reinforced role distinctions between governance and management, and oriented newly elected directors.- Serving in our role with the PHILANTHROPIC PARTNERSHIP FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION (a funders collaborative), the Alliance facilitated a grant to strengthen how the district supports principals in strengthening their evaluations and support of teachers to maximize impact on student performance. |
