Activity 2

NUTRITION The nutrition outreach program provides information, referrals, and application assistance to over 16,000 King County residents. Through these activities WithinReach assists with application screening and submission for a number of public assistance programs, including Basic Food and Apple Health for Kids, and conducts in-person outreach at sites throughout King and Snohomish Counties, including food banks, community clinics, libraries, and job-training sites, collaborating with over 50 partner agencies, makes referrals including information about health insurance options, low-cost medical clinics, food banks, meal programs, utility assistance, and free tax preparation. WithinReach trains and supervises a volunteer corps recruited by the United Way of King County, who assist with our screening and application work. WithinReach's breastfeeding promotion includes a statewide quality improvement initiative to implement evidence-based hospital maternity care and breastfeeding support. Nineteen hospitals are enrolled, impacting the care received by 44% of the births in Washington State. The Worksite Lactation Support project was expanded to incorporate direct outreach to employers of low-wage earning women. New work began to support community health centers in enhancing the breastfeeding support they provide to new mothers, with a particular focus on African American, Native American and Latino families. Several informational outreach materials were updated to provide mothers and health care providers with accessible information about breastfeeding. WithinReach organized World Breastfeeding Week activities round the state, published the Breastfeeding Matters newsletter, and provided continual technical assistance to the more than 20 local breastfeeding coalitions located throughout Washington State.

Activity 3

IMMUNIZATION The Immunization promotion and awareness work at WithinReach includes: printing and distribution of 15,000 laminated childhood immunization schedules to providers; hosting quarterly Immunization Action Coalition of WA (IACW) meetings with educational presentations and panels, attended by over 120 IACW members; coordination of a CME program for immunization providers presented by CDC trainers with over 400 attendees; administering a distance learning curriculum for childcare providers on the importance of adult immunizations, which was successfully completed by 567 childcare providers; implementation of a multi-year social marketing immunization initiative, which included development and implementation of a grassroots community intervention and a randomized controlled trial testing use of a toolkit focused on provider-patient communication in the clinic setting. WithinReach piloted a hepatitis B nail salon outreach project in Tacoma, WA, with the following outreach results: interviewed 138, tested 135, vaccinated 63, identified 8 positive for hepatitis B. With CDC funding WithinReach piloted a comprehensive hepatitis B education, testing, vaccination, and linkage to care services project targeting adults born in Asia or Africa in Seattle King County. WithinReach served on CDC's Know More Hepatitis B Campaign and helped form the national Hep B UNITED coalition. WithinReach gave presentations at the 2011 Cross Cultural Health Care Conference, the 2011 Annual American Public Health Association, the 2012 National Conference on Immunizations & Health Coalitions conference, and received the 2012 Health Champion's State Level Impact award from the Washington State Public Health Association.
