Mission
Philanthropy northwest promotes, facilitates, and drives collaborative action by philanthropic organizations to strengthen communities in our six state region of alaska, idaho, montana, oregon, washington and wyoming. Our vision is northwest communities that have vibrant, healthy futures that honor our past, our people and our cultures.
Major Activities

- Educational meetings, conferences, programs and workshops:philanthropy northwest serves as a convener, trainer, resource center, service provider, and advocate for philanthropic issues of interest to its members. As of december 31, 2011, there were 171 member organizations, including private family foundations, community foundations, public foundations and corporate giving programs. A total of 65 programs were held during the twelve-month period with a combined attendance of approximately 1017 grantmakers. The majority of those attending were staff and trustees from member organizations.highlights of our 2011 program service accomplishments include:the 2011 annual conference & membership meeting was held in missoula, montana where 190 attendees, representing all types and geographic focus, met to discuss the key issues of the moment. The conference explored the theme of "barn raising: the art of collaboration" through 24 break-out sessions, including 4 in-depth discussions, and two keynote presentations.the philanthropy northwest corporate philanthropy institute gathered 28 corporate philanthropists in seattle, wa, for professional development and peer exchange. Topics covered included setting internal and external measurements and engaging stakeholders through effective communications.as the only consistent provider of the national curriculum, best practices in grantmaking: essential skills and strategies, philanthropy northwest offered the program once to 19 attendees. We once again hosted a family philanthropy day, so that the trustees and staff of family foundations could explore with their peers the responsibilities and challenges unique to this type of philanthropy. Lisa parker, president and executive director of the lawrence welk family foundation, served as keynote. She spoke to issues of multigenerational giving, expanding the board beyond family, donor intent and evolving family values, and inspiring youth philanthropy.through generous underwriting of the bill & melinda gates foundation, philanthropy northwest continued our community foundation initiative by supporting community foundations in washington state in multiple and meaningful ways. Philanthropy northwest provided dedicated staffing, managed a listserv, supported the annual convening of washington community foundations, wrote blog posts and distributed other communications about the valuable role of community foundations in our region. We were especially proud to manage the proclamation by washington governor christine gregoire of the first community foundation week for the state.we continued to grow the core service of helping our members understand and partner with the public policy field. The public policy program manager worked closely with the public policy committee to build strong relationships between northwest funders and policymakers and to deliver programs illustrating the role philanthropy plays in building strong communities. Over a dozen members attended foundations on the hill in washington, dc, for a series of meetings with their elected officials. Philanthropy northwest convened funders from all corners of our region for capacity building learning circle events, exploring a variety of philanthropic strategies to better understand undercapitalized nonprofit organizations, including a session on the lifecycles of a nonprofit. Improved technology has allowed our geographically diverse membership to participate more fully in all programming, such as: - over half of all programs were made accessible via teleconference- posting on our website video podcasts of national speakers examining diversity in the field and how to leverage public and private investments- listservs for community foundations and capacity building funders - three webinars focused on washington state nonprofits and the federal budget impact on poor- monthly montana/wyoming/idaho funders teleconferences.we also offered learning opportunities on diverse topics, such as:- traini

- Pri makers network:since december 2008, philanthropy northwest has served under a formal agreement to serve as fiscal sponsor for the pri makers network (pri). Pri's purpose is to be a charitable education network that provides leadership and support to the community of grantmakers working to encourage the effective use of program related and other social investments. Philanthropy northwest and its members will gain expertise in program related and mission related investing to be incorporated into member trainings and conferences. Pri operates as a program of philanthropy northwest.
