Mission

Philanthropy northwest promotes, facilitates, and drives collaborative action by philanthropic organizations to strengthen communities in our six state region of alaska, idaho, montana, oregon, washington and wyoming. Our vision is northwest communities that have vibrant, healthy futures that honor our past, our people and our cultures.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Member services & special initiatives:member dues support a number of services provided directly to members or the community at large. Member services include:publications: philanthropy northwest produces both electronic and print communications to highlight news and resources of interest to grantmakers and philanthropists. During this period, philanthropy northwest printed:1."a journey into indian country," chronicling five years of work to build and strengthen relationships between organized philanthropy and native americans and first alaskans in our region.2."community foundations as capacity builders," a report on philanthropy northwest's 2010 grants to community foundations.3."grease and glue," a report highlighting philanthropy northwest's role in facilitating collaborative action to strengthen communities.philanthropy northwest publishes a monthly, region-wide e-bulletin with up-to-date information on philanthropy in the northwest, member staffing news, program updates, and more. This newsletter was sent to over 1400 subscribers, providing timely information on events and newsworthy information. Additionally, e-bulletins specifically for funders working in montana and wyoming were created and distributed every other month, while quarterly e-bulletins for corporate grantmakers and alaska funders were also produced. Philanthropy northwest's website (www.philanthropynw.org) provides relevant information to members on programs, collaborations, news, resources and member benefits. In addition to serving our members, the website provides information to the grantseeking public, policymakers, media, and others interested in the philanthropy field. The website hosts a regional job bank, as well as a "northwest funders directory," a resource available to assist the nonprofit community in identifying potential grantmaking funders.affinity group meetings: to assist member organizations with staff and trustees who wish to network and learn with peers, and in some cases coordinate and collaborate on funding strategies, philanthropy northwest provided staff support to the "early childhood learning" affinity group, the "grantmakers of color" affinity group, and a "capacity building learning circle." they met as a group to discuss relevant issues, hear speakers or panel discussions, or collaborate on special opportunities. Member briefings and brown bag briefings are organized by members to explore single topics or concerns. Programs in 2012 included:- using assessments to direct investments- working solutions in olympia- public foundation overview- caring across generations- community colleges count initiativetechnical assistance and library services: members regularly request staff research and referral to information relevant to general operations of foundations and current issues. Philanthropy northwest maintains an up-to-date library that currently holds over 600 resources. Members borrow materials free of charge. In 2012, philanthropy northwest launched a capacity building campaign to support "a relevant and sustainable future." the campaign was designed to expand our ability to support collaborative behaviors within philanthropy and across sectors, forge more effective public sector partnerships and build our role as a trusted resource to philanthropy working in indian country and building civic capacity. The campaign will allow us to:- build philanthropy northwest's public policy and strategic communications capabilities- develop and share valuable knowledge and "lessons learned" from our members' work in indian country and building civic capacity throughout the region- inspire and support collaboration by fully implementing the giving practice business planat the end of 2012, we had raised $608,300 toward our $800,000 goal.philanthropy northwest also provided fiscal services to a member foundation in support of its national convening. Activity 3
The giving practice:the giving practice provides customized philanthropic consulting to philanthropic organizations and collaborations, primarily, but not exclusively, in the northwest. The practice provides high quality consulting services and is a source of income to support philanthropy northwest's charitable activities. In 2011, a full-time managing director was hired to guide and expand the services offered by the giving practice. During 2012 planning went into developing a business plan to expand and enhance the services of the giving practice. At the close of 2012, we had three consultants on staff, and seven independent contractor consultants.

PRI MAKERS NETWORK INTEGRATED WITH MORE FOR MISSION IN APRIL 2012 AND CREATED A NEW ORGANIZATION, MISSION INVESTORS EXCHANGE [MIE]. MIE WORKS WITH PHILANTHROPIC LEADERS AND PRACTITIONERS TO ACCELERATE THE USE OF MISSION INVESTMENTS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE LIVES, SAFEGUARD THE ENVIRONMENT AND STRENGTHEN COMMMUNITIES. MIE WILL CONTINUE TO BE A CHARITABLE EDUCATION NETWORK THAT PROVIDES LEADERSHIP AND SUPPORT TO THE COMMUNITY OF GRANTMAKERS WORKING TO ENCOURAGE THE EFFECTIVE USE OF PROGRAM-RELATED AND OTHER SOCIAL INVESTMENTS. PHILANTHROPY NORTHWEST AND ITS MEMBERS WILL GAIN EXPERTISE IN PROGRAM RELATED AND MISSION RELATED INVESTING TO BE INCORPORATED INTO MEMBER TRAININGS AND CONFERENCES.
