Mission

Philanthropy northwest promotes, facilitates, and drives collaborative action by philanthropic organizations to strengthen communities in our six state region of alaska, idaho, montana, oregon, washington and wyoming. Our vision is northwest communities that have vibrant, healthy futures that honor our past, our people and our cultures.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Member services:member dues support a number of services provided directly to members or the community at large. Member services include:technical assistance and library services. Members regularly request staff research and referral to information relevant to general operations of foundations and current issues. Philanthropy northwest maintains an up-to-date library that currently holds over 600 resources. Members borrow materials free of charge. Publications. Philanthropy northwest produces both electronic and print communications to highlight news and resources of interest to grant makers and philanthropists. During this period, philanthropy northwest printed a report to the community, highlighting various projects and also including our annual financial report. Philanthropy northwest publishes a monthly, region-wide e-bulletin with up-to-date information on philanthropy in the northwest, member staffing news, program updates, and more. This newsletter was sent to over 1180 subscribers, providing timely information on events and newsworthy information. Additionally, e-bulletins specifically for funders working in montana and wyoming were created and distributed every other month, while quarterly e-bulletins for corporate grant makers and alaska funders were also produced. Philanthropy northwest's website (www.philanthropynw.org) provides relevant information to members on programs, collaborations, news, resources and member benefits. In addition to serving our members, the website provides information to the grant seeking public, policymakers, media, and others interested in the philanthropy field. The website hosts a regional job bank, as well as a northwest funders directory, a resource available to assist the nonprofit community in identifying potential grant making funders.in 2010, philanthropy northwest produced the latest edition of its trends in northwest giving report, the most comprehensive analysis on funding in our region. The report provided important context for funders seeking to better understand their impact in the region and illustrated the role of philanthropy for policymakers and members of the media; for the first time, the report included a special section on giving by northwest foundations to nonprofits doing international work. Staff presented the latest edition of the report to interested audiences throughout the region, including grant makers in boise, congressional representatives on capitol hill, nonprofit organizations in montana, and attendees to the seattle's first conference on international philanthropy.affinity group meetings. To assist member organizations with staff and trustees who wish to network and learn with peers, and in some cases coordinate and collaborate on funding strategies, philanthropy northwest provided staff support to the early childhood learning affinity group and the grant makers of color affinity group. Both typically met as a group several, times per year to discuss relevant issues, hear speakers or panel discussions, or collaborate on joint opportunities. Member briefings and brown bag briefings are organized by members to explore single topics or concerns. Programs in 2010 included:- connecting the dots: health, housing and community context;- alicie epstein korten, author of change philanthropy;- documenting family foundation histories;- website & new member tutorials; and- civic engagement and movement building.
Activity 3
The giving practice:the giving practice provides one-on-one philanthropic consulting to grant makers and philanthropists in the northwest. The practice provides high quality philanthropic consulting services.

A TOTAL OF 62 PROGRAMS WERE HELD DURING THE TWELVE-MONTH PERIOD WITH A COMBINED ATTENDANCE OF APPROXIMATELY 1075 GRANTMAKERS. THE MAJORITY OF THOSE ATTENDING WERE STAFF AND TRUSTEES FROM MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS.HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR 2010 PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE:THE 2010 ANNUAL CONFERENCE & MEMBERSHIP MEETING WAS HELD IN BLAINE, WASHINGTON WHERE 195 ATTENDEES - REPRESENTING ALL TYPES AND GEOGRAPHIC FOCUS - MET TO DISCUSS THE KEY ISSUES OF THE MOMENT. THE CONFERENCE EXPLORED THE THEME OF "POWER OF PLACE" THROUGH 27 BREAK-OUT SESSIONS AND TWO KEYNOTE PRESENTATIONS.THE PHILANTHROPY NORTHWEST CORPORATE PHILANTHROPY INSTITUTE GATHERED 32 CORPORATE PHILANTHROPISTS IN SEATTLE, WA TO HEAR KEYNOTE SPEAKER KELLIE MCELHANEY, AUTHOR OF JUST GOOD BUSINESS: STRATEGIC GUIDE TO ALIGNING CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY & BRAND. AS THE ONLY CONSISTENT PROVIDER OF THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM, BEST PRACTICES IN GRANTMAKING: ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND STRATEGIES, PHILANTHROPY NORTHWEST OFFERED THE PROGRAM TWICE. WE ONCE AGAIN HOSTED A FAMILY PHILANTHROPY DAY, SO THAT THE TRUSTEES AND STAFF OF FAMILY FOUNDATIONS COULD EXPLORE WITH THEIR PEERS THE RESPONSIBILITIES AND CHALLENGES UNIQUE TO THIS TYPE OF PHILANTHROPY. BILL GATES, SR., GINNY ESPOSITO OF NATIONAL CENTER ON FAMILY PHILANTHROPY, AND MARY PEMBROKE PERLIN OF PEMBROKE PERLIN FUND WERE SPEAKERS THIS YEAR. PHILANTHROPY NORTHWEST HOSTED A 3-PART SERIES: DYNAMIC ADAPTABILITY: ARTS AND CULTURE PUGET SOUND, AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO SUPPORTING ARTS GRANTEES IN RESPONSE TO THE ECONOMIC UPHEAVAL OF 2009. OVER SEVERAL MONTHS, GRANTEES AND FUNDERS EXPLORED "ADAPTIVE" RESPONSES FOR ARTS ORGANIZATIONS STRUGGLING THROUGH THE RECESSION. NATIONAL EXPERTS GUIDED THE PROJECT, SUPPORTING WORKING SESSIONS ON CHANGE MANAGEMENT, FINANCIAL REPORTING AND SOCIAL MEDIA. PHILANTHROPY NORTHWEST SERVED AS FISCAL SPONSOR AND EVENT MANAGER.OUR COMMITMENT TO HELP MEMBERS BETTER UNDERSTAND AND PARTNER WITH THE PUBLIC POLICY FIELD WAS REINFORCED IN 2010 WITH THE HIRE OF PHILANTHROPY NORTHWEST'S FIRST PROGRAM MANAGER FOR PUBLIC POLICY. THE PROGRAM MANAGER WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE PUBLIC POLICY COMMITTEE TO BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN NORTHWEST FUNDERS AND POLICYMAKERS AND TO DELIVER PROGRAMS ILLUSTRATING THE ROLE PHILANTHROPY PLAYS IN BUILDING STRONG ECONOMIES.PHILANTHROPY NORTHWEST CONVENED FUNDERS FROM ALL CORNERS OF OUR REGION FOR QUARTERLY CAPACITY BUILDING LEARNING CIRCLE EVENTS, EXPLORING A VARIETY OF PHILANTHROPIC STRATEGIES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND UNDERCAPITALIZED NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. PHILANTHROPY NORTHWEST LAUNCHED A UNIQUE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS IN THEIR ROLE AS PHILANTHROPIC CHAMPIONS OF COMMUNITY WELL-BEING.
