Mission and Program Overview

Mission

California Releaf's mission is to empower grassroots efforts and build strategic partnerships that preserve, protect and enhance California's urban and community forests.

Major Activities

Activity 2
California ReLeaf NetworkThe California ReLeaf Network is a statewide forum for exchange, education, and mutual support for community-based organizations. The members have common goals of planting and protecting trees, fostering an ethic of environmental stewardship, and promoting volunteer involvement. The ReLeaf Network enables individual groups to use their collective power to improve the urban and community forests in their own towns. Through membership in the Network, groups build their organizational and technical skills, share their enthusiasm, experiences and ideas, address issues of common concern, and work together to advance urban forestry throughout the state. 2012 accomplishments of this program include:In 2012, the Network had 88 members that varied from small groups of dedicated volunteers to mature nonprofit organizations with paid staff. Network members represent diverse demographics and broad geographic spread throughout California.our Network Coordinator sent regular "Network Updates" to Network members throughout 2012. These emails covered a variety of topics, including information about funding opportunities, upcoming conferences and workshops, research reports, job announcements and more.In 2012, ReLeaf Network members:- Planted and cared for 130,000 trees- Engaged over 157,000 volunteers
Activity 3
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH - This program strengthens grassroots efforts by engaging the general public, community leaders, interested organizations, and urban and community forestry professionals. California ReLeaf's outreach programs are designed to educate residents about the benefits and values of trees as well as sound arboricultural practices. 2012 accomplishments include:Carbon Offsets & the Urban Forest Workshop- California ReLeaf helped to coordinate a day-long workshop on June 6, 2012 on the campus of UC Davis. This workshop was designed to help community organizations, civic leaders and others understand how urban forestry projects could participate in carbon offset market. California ReLeaf helped to promote this workshop in our Network Update emails and in the Summer 2012 issue of California Trees. ReLeaf's participation in the workshop planning was part of our effort to strengthen partnerships centered around this important issue and to position urban forestry as a viable part of the carbon offset market and the state's greenhouse gas emission reduction strategy.2012 Partners in Community Forestry Conference- The National Arbor Day Foundation hosted the partners in Community Forestry National Conference in Sacramento on November 14 and 15, 2012. To take advantage of this national gathering, the Alliance for Community Trees hosted its annual meeting in Sacramento on November 13, 2012. During the "ACTree Day" on November 13, ReLeaf held a special "ReLeaf Retreat" session for the Network. This special session included an introduction of the new-restarted Network Advisory Committee, an overview of Network priorities for 2013, a catalogue of upcoming webinars, a snapshot of the public funding picture and opportunities in the immediate and long-term future, and information about legislative and advocacy priorities and techniques. Most of the attendees to the ACTree Day and ReLeaf Network Retreat on November 13 also attended the Partners in Community Forestry Conference on the following two days. The pairing of these events gave Network members a unique opportunity to network and learn from each other, hear about California-specific issues, and learn from national experts, leaders in the urban forestry field, and other organizations across the country.Publications - The Summer 2012 (Volume 20, No.1) issue of California Trees included a lead article about the role of urban forests in California's cap and trade market as the state works to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. This issue of the newsletter also included a story about the alarming trend of cash-strapped cities turning over tree maintenance to residents. This issue's Network profile was on City Trees in Redwood City. This issue also included an announcement of California ReLeaf's 2012 Tree Planing and Tree Care grants program, a legislative update, and announcements of upcoming conferences. The Winter 2012 (Volume 20, No.2) issue of California Trees featured a lead story about the state of California's urban forests, including their challenges, some creative solutions to problems, and ideas for funding urban forests. This issue also gave a great synopsis of the recently-concluded ARRA grant and its impact in creating and retaining jobs in California. This issue's Network profile focused on the Urban Corps of San Diego County. In March 2013, California ReLeaf completed an Annual Report for 2012, which was distributed to Network members, board members, donors, and collaborating organizations. It highlighted California ReLeaf's programs, services, and accomplishments in 2012, and included financial information for California ReLeaf, an update about legislative advocacy efforts, and an overview of two federal grants received by California ReLeaf. In Fall 2012, California ReLeaf spearheaded the creation of materials describing the relationship of urban forestry in creating jobs. These materials include a brochure titled "Urban and Community Forests. Creating Jobs. Leaving a

IRS990/Description0CALIFORNIA RELEAF GRANT PROGRAMS - 2012 Urban Forestry and Education ProgramCalifornia ReLeaf's 2012-13 Program was funded through contracts with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and Region IX of the Environmental Protection Agency. A funding announcement and Request for Proposals was released for this program in May 2012. After the application deadline in July 2012, the review committee awarded 25 organizations grants ranging from $2,700 to $10,000, totaling nearly $200,000. The recipients are engaging in a variety of tree planting and tree maintenance projects that will enhance urban forests in both highly utilized and severely under-served communities throughout the state. Each project also contains a significant environmental education component that will increase the visibility of how these projects are critical elements to supporting clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. This particular grant cycle was significant because it included funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the first ever funding of this nature from this federal agency. California ReLeaf was the only entity in all of the EPA's Region IX to receive funding from their Environmental Education Grant Program. In March 2012, California ReLeaf was awarded a $150,000 grant from the EPA aimed at enhancing environmental education. This grant from the EPA enabled California ReLeaf to award sub-grants of up to $5,000 to local organizations, with the intent to create effective opportunities for environmental education through hands-on stewardship during tree planting or tree care community projects. This EPA grant was administered in tandem with Tree Planting and Urban Forestry grant funds from CAL FIRE. California ReLeaf developed a single program in which applications could apply for either a Tree Planting and Education grant or a Tree Care and Education grant. Funds from both EPA and CAL FIRE were administered through this program, providing an opportunity for grants of up to $10,000. American Revoery and Reinvestment Act grant- In 2012, California ReLeaf completed a $6.1 million grant from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. California ReLeaf administered 17 different programs which resulted in early 90,000 trees planted and maintained, the creation and retention of more than 380 local jobs, and the match of over $5 locally. The ARRA projects proved that urban and community forests create local jobs and have a positive impact on California's economy.Tree Planting Grants- In 2012, California ReLeaf administered funding from two CAL FIRE tree planting grants (contracts 8CA09931 and 8CA10901). Through these two tree planting grants, California ReLeaf administered $64,246 to community-based organizations across the state. 2012 Arbor Week mini-grants- California ReLeaf's 2012 Arbor Week program included minigrants to selected organizations to implement tree-planting projects during California Arbor Week, between March 7th and March 14th, 2012. Grants could be used for trees and planting materials including stakes, ties, root collar protections, wood chip surface mulch, soil amendments, water tools, hand tools and water supply materials. California ReLeaf selected six organizations as grantees, with awards ranging from $232 to $500, totaling $1,717.Odwalla- In summer 2012, the beverage company Odwalla contacted California ReLeaf to request a video submission to its national Plant a Tree contest. California ReLeaf jumped on this opportunity to help win $10,000 for one of its Network members. California ReLeaf partnered with Canopy to submit an entry to raise funds to plant 116 trees at Brentwood School in East Palo Alto. California ReLeaf and Canopy jointly produced a video which was then posted on the Odwalla website for the public to view and vote. The ten projects garnering the most votes each won a $10,000 price. California ReLeaf worked aggressively to promote this contest through postings on
