Mission and Program Overview

Mission

California Releaf's mission is to empower grassroots efforts and build strategic partnerships that preserve, protect and enhance California's urban and community forests.

Major Activities

Activity 2
NETWORK - The California ReLeaf Network is an alliance of nearly 75 community-based organizations that share the common goals of planting and protecting trees, fostering an ethic of environmental stewardship, and promoting citizen involvement. The ReLeaf Network enables individual groups to use their collective power to improve the urban and community forest in their own towns. Through membership in the Network, groups build their organizational and technical skills, share their enthusiasm, experiences and ideas, address issues of common concern, and work together to advance urban forestry throughout the state. 2011 accomplishments of this program include:In 2011, the Network had 73 members that varied from small groups of dedicated volunteers to mature nonprofit organizations with paid staff. Network members represent diverse demographics and broad geographic spread throughout California. Our Network Coordinator sent regular "Network Updates" to members throughout 2011. These updates covered a variety of topics, including information about funding opportunities, upcoming conferences and workshops, research reports, job announcements and more. In 2011, ReLeaf Network members:Planted over 53,000 treesCared for over 122,000 treesHeld over 1,400 outreach eventsEngaged over 31,000 volunteers
Activity 3
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH - This program strengthens grassroots efforts by engaging the general public, community leaders, interested organizations, and urban and community forestry professionals. California ReLeaf's outreach programs are designed to educate residents about the benefits and values of trees as well as sound arboricultural practices. 2011 accomplishments include:The 2011 California Urban & Community Forest Conference was jointly hosted by California ReLeaf and the California Urban Forests Council. This bi-annual conference was held September 15-17, 2011 in Palo Alto, and marked the seventh year that California ReLeaf and the California Urban Forests Council partnered to host this event. The theme of the 2011 conference was "Connecting People, Trees, and Communities." There were 109 attendees including 42 representatives from ReLeaf Network groups. Topics of workshops and presentations included funding opportunities, fundraising strategies, fruit tree programs, tree species diversity, Best Management Practices, technology tools, public health benefits of trees, and a pruning techniques.Publications - The Summer 2011 (Volume 19, No. 1) issue of California Trees included a lead article about technology tools for the 21st Century, including programs that analyze and provide scientifically-based measurements of trees and tree benefits on multiple scales of size. This article provided an overview of various programs in the i-Tree suite (i-Tree Eco, i-Tree Streets), as well as CITYGreen, the Tree Carbon Calculator, and the Urban Forest Map. This newsletter also included a summary of the successes of our 2011 California Arbor Week program and a profile of Network member, Hollywood Beautification Team. The Winter 2011 issue (Volume 19, No. 2) featured a lead article about the threats to California's urban forests that are caused by invasive insects, and included information about detection, prevention, and eradication efforts for invasive pests. In addition, this edition of California Trees included a story about holiday trees, including the 2011 "People's Tree" that was selected for display at the U.S. Capitol which originated from the Stanislaus National Forest. Finally, this issue provided a profile of Visalia-based organization, Community Services and Employment Training (CSET), a legislative recap, and an update about the California ReLeaf-administered American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) urban forestry grants. In March 2012, California ReLeaf completed an Annual Report for 2011, which was distributed to Network members, board members, donors, and collaborating organizations. It highlighted California ReLeaf's programs, services, and accomplishments, including California ReLeaf's administration of more than $2 million to 30 community-based organizations and local governments throughout California. The report also included financial information for California ReLeaf, an update about legislative advocacy efforts, and an overview of the California Arbor Week program which launched in 2011. In 2011 California ReLeaf further developed the California Arbor Week program to celebrate Arbor Week during March 7 - 14. Our goals with this program are to market and promote Arbor Week as a statewide event, garner media attention and volunteer support, expand and enhance Arbor Week activities and programs, and educate our state's leaders and citizens about the value of urban forestry. During the first year of the program, California ReLeaf launched a new website (www.arborweek.org), implemented a statewide poster contest for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students, partnered with Assembly Member Roger Dickenson to introduce Assembly Concurrent Resolution 10 in the State Legislature, and developed an educational brochure for distribution by local organizations.
