Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Public Invention is a non-profit dedicated to invention in the public, for the public. Our activities will consist of a research activities to create new inventions that benefit the public, specifically the poor and distressed. We will also engage in community building activities to help recruit volunteers interested in creating new inventions and helping develop and validate the skills necessary for those individuals be successful.

We "Invent in the public, for the Public." We research new inventions that benefit the public, specifically the poor and distressed. We engage in community building activities (such as conferences) to help recruit volunteers interested in creating new inventions and helping develop and validate the sills necessary for those individuals to be successful. In 2021, we primarily worked on humanitarian engineering in the form of open-source ventilators, oxygen concentrators, and test equipment. We maintained our programs in mathematical publication and water quality analysis.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
PolyVent: An open source mechanical ventilator for education and pre-clinical human ventilation. Prototype exists, and will be reported on academic journals. Someday businesses may seek FDA approval of derived designs.$0$17,412
VentMon: An open hardware ventilation tester and analyzer. We continued to give away our remaining VentMons to over a dozen engineering and research teams worldwide. This was highly praised by some teams (others did not use it.) Associated free software standards data standards and libraries are an important part (PIRDS, PIRCS) .-$16,725
Moonrat: A portable battery-powered incubator. We continue the development of a physical prototype for water quality analysis in rural locations (without reliable electricity.)-$1,456
EcoPot: A highly efficient cooking pot. As a capstone engineering project at Rice University, a team developed a cooking pot which may be 42% more efficient when cooking over an open wood fire. Physical prototypes were tested and research continues.-$934

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Part I, Line 10

This was small matching grant to Helpful Engineering, a US 501(c)3 specifically to raise money for OpenVentBristol and Project Taurus

Part I, Line 16

These expenses were equipment and supplies purchased and for actually invention programs, plus a new Computer, and $970 for our website hosting. By far the largest expense ($17,411.87) was for the PolyVent program, an open-source pandemic ventilator. The Moonrat portable incububator cost $1,456. The EcoPot efficient cooking pot cost $933.

Part I, Line 20

President and founder Robert L. Read made personal donations of $799 which were not accounted as general incoming donations due to accounting errors or debt accrued to him in the previous year.
